I usually upgrade every 2-3 years, on a 15 Pro Max right now, the upcoming folding phone has no appeal to me. Played with a Samsung Fold 6 enough to know that form factor isn't for me.

Orange 17 Pro Max is my next move...maybe. Might go another year tho.

I tip my hat to all you folks still rocking the 13’s! I’m annoyed at myself for jumping on all these carrier deals and upgrading. My new plan is to last 5 years! Must resist
Yeah, as an iPhone SE 3 owner, A15 devices such as the iPhone 13 are really solid machines still in 2025! I plan to use mine for several extra years, and maybe in 2027 I’ll get the iPhone 18e, if it packs an A20 and 12GB of RAM within the same iPhone 14 body. Fingers crossed!

No foldables for me, thank you. Just put a nice A20 and 12GB of RAM in the regular iPhone 18 or 18e, and I’ll probably get that.

Until then, until the first 2nm SoC arrives to the regular lineup, I’ll be rocking my iPhone SE 3.

I love the idea of a foldable, but I just can’t see it in my pocket. Almost twice the thickness? How do I put a case on it? Screen protector? I have an iPad. I just can’t see it, not even considering the potential cost.

My upgrade cycle is usually 4 to 6 years. However, I bought iPhone 16 with Apple Care+ so it joined iPhone Upgrade Program. If iPhone 17 (Air) is really that good, I might consider upgrading this year.

Since we know the foldable iPhone will be released next year, those who are supposed to have an upgrade cycle this year or planning to get the 17, will you still do or wait for the foldable?

OR GET BOTH?!
Definitely getting a new 17Pro this year, and an 18Pro next year; the foldable concept does fit my current needs.

On a 14pro I was tempted at the air but since they are most likely going to do a single camera it’s a no let’s see what they do next year. I wanted the ability to record spacial video just to have that content of family videos if I ever got a Vision Pro that could display it but per Apple it requires the 2 lenses hence the bs to move the lenses to line up on the current 16s when they were already line up on the 14s.

What is an "upgrade cycle?" Is that like some kind of menstrual cycle for tech? If so, I have never had one. I do not buy tech on a schedule, but rather based on wants/needs.

A foldable will be a decision to be considered after they are on the street. So not relevant to 2025 iPhone purchase decision making but possibly very relevant to 2026 iPhone purchase decision making.

Looking beyond the typical Apple hype, neither the 17 series or upcoming fold appeal.

Waiting till next year saves time, money and will enhance the user experience provided by any actual improvements made.

My current iPhone 16 Pro Max is good enough till then.

I will upgrade from 14PM to either the 17 Air or PM, though likely the PM. The foldable doesn’t interest me - I cannot stand the screen crease for one, and I’m not convinced Apple can make it disappear completely, and secondly I don’t much like the fold form factor. When I’ve played with the latest Galaxy and Oppo fold models, the form factor just feels clunky to me. The flip style, however, I would consider if Apple made one and the aforementioned crease is genuinely solved.

13Pro here. If the normal 17 will have 120Hz screen I think that’s the phone for me. If not and the price increase is more than the rumoured here in Europe… I will seriously try the switch to Android with my work phone.

As of now I don’t see myself wanting a folding phone, but I guess we’ll see. I like to upgrade every year and it’s easy with the jump upgrade program from T-Mobile, I just pay tax on the new device and send in my previous one.

I'll be getting a 17 Pro. I have no interest in Apple's foldable.

Why would I want a worse iPhone than any other in the line up AND the worst iPad available, all in one device, for $2,000? There is no benefit to be had there.

The iPhone part is expected to be 5.5", with a short and fat aspect ratio. Why are there no other iPhones like this? Why has there never been any other iPhone like this? Because that's not a size or aspect that anyone actually wants. It is a design compromise to achieve other goals. That is not good. It will also have side button Touch ID, which is a huge regression and an awful user experience. I've used that on iPad Air for years and it is just as terrible and awkward years later as it was when it first launched. Face ID is effortless, and top tier quality. I'll never buy an iPhone without it or something better. It is also expected to have a single camera, and other limitations not found on any other iPhone.

The iPad part is expected to fall just short of iPad mini size, which means it will take over the mantel as worst iPad from iPad mini. At such a small size, none of iPad's actual utility is available. Until you get to at least 10", you can't use the device any differently than you would a phone. You're just using a larger phone. So while you might enjoy unfolding your phone to watch a video...what have you really gained for your $2k? You can't open it up and start multi tasking and being productive like an actual iPad. You're still just on a larger phone.

I get the concept, its not like I don't understand WHY you might want a bigger device unfolded from a smaller device. But the reality is that what is achievable today is a heavily compromised version of both. And the only reason Apple is even considering it is because of the price tag.

I think I am way too young for having “a book phone”. Always seemed more of a grandpa-style to me. So if Apple actually copies Samsung and makes foldable phone - I will pass, especially considering it will probably be 2000€+ or smth. I had very hard time already recovering from tremendous price hikes since 2012, my first iPhone was 700€ or smth… All the Androids are much cheaper in Europe, you can get regular s25 with 256gb storage for 649€ rn in Netherlands. I mean this is cheap! But unfortunately I am too fixated on ecosystem and camera features to do that switch, as well as s25 is hideous.

First wanted to get iPhone 17 Pro but to be honest, my current iPhone works OK. Will probably get iPad instead - cheaper, more screen real estate, better apps and workflow for photo editing

Planning on getting a 17 Pro Max. At the same time very much looking forward to the foldable from Apple.

However the early rumors are not making me excited. Looks like there will be no telephoto lens, and the screen will be smaller than Z Fold and it will only have TouchID. Have always been interested in the Z Fold and been wanting Apple to make a foldable. But have to wait and see. Might get the foldable from Apple or maybe even jump ship and get the Z Fold!

I thought about upgrading to the 15, nearly upgraded to the 16 but this year I'm very lkikely to finally upgrade my iPhone 11 to one of the 17 models.

I'll let the foldable phone design evolve for two or three years before deciding whether to upgrade my new 17 to one of them.

I have absolutely no interest in a folding phone

I will keep using my mini 12 until it stops working and then buy the smallest smart phone I can find

I hope it’s an iPhone but I guess it’s not the end of the world if it’s not

my 14 pro is getting a little hungry and its battery has dropped to 77% capacity. I'd normally just replace the battery but theres a chip in the corner of the screen glass, meaning if the screen is removed to replace the battery, a new scren will need to be installed when they close it up again. by that point I'm halfway to the price of a new phone so unfortunately I'll probably be upgrading.

I'm really hoping theres a pleasant surprise this year in iphones because I really dont want to upgrade

Honestly, not sure. I may go ahead with the 17… The reason being, my last phone upgrade (XS Max to 14 Pro Max) was such a long period of time that my trade-in was hardly worth anything. I would like to keep up just so I don’t end up in a situation like that.

Waiting for the foldable is very tempting, though…
Financially you are still ahead if you are uogesding every 4 years and making less on a sale then if you upgeaded every 2 years and made more on a sale 😆
