Other To those who have an upgrade cycle this year, are you planning to get the 17 or wait for the iPhone Fold?

Definitely waiting for fold. I had the samsung Fold 4, loved the phone and the concept of it but HATED android. So this is a dream come true for me, amazing form factor with my favorite OS. I have 15 pro max and i dont see any reasons to upgrade to 17 anyway, i still get all the AI features and there’s no compelling difference between the two phones. 15 pro max is still great.

I love the idea of a foldable, but I just can’t see it in my pocket. Almost twice the thickness? How do I put a case on it? Screen protector? I have an iPad. I just can’t see it, not even considering the potential cost.
twice the thickness of what?
Latest Foldables (and buy extension apples eventual foldable) are all around 8-9 MM thick.
so basically the same as the Pro, which is already 8.25 MM thick.
The ZFold 7 is also 12 G lighter than the 16 Pro Max.

Since we know the foldable iPhone will be released next year, those who are supposed to have an upgrade cycle this year or planning to get the 17, will you still do or wait for the foldable?

OR GET BOTH?!
Most likely will get the 17 Pro next month. My 16 Pro Max is too tall for my liking.

I will then trade-in the 17 Pro to Apple in 2026 for the folding iPhone.

I upgrade every year. I buy mine on the Apple Store app, and trade in the prior years model. With a $600-$700 trade in value, I end up paying about $500 per year. $1.67/ day is a small price to pay for a device that does as much in my life as my iphone.

In theory, I'm at my 2 year upgrade cycle. I've had a few 3 year cycles in there, and this might be another - I see no real reason to replace my 15 Pro. If Apple comes out with a surprise mini, I'll be first in line, especially if we can get a Pro mini. Still have my 13 mini and thought long and hard before I bought the 15 Pro. The lightness and smaller bezels sold me on going up in size again, but I still think the mini size is perfect.

I seriously want to update to 17 pro max from my 11. Or whatever they throw this year. I am already so lagging in the screen size and hardware and battery and camera and all.

I tip my hat to all you folks still rocking the 13’s! I’m annoyed at myself for jumping on all these carrier deals and upgrading. My new plan is to last 5 years! Must resist
I don't think I need to upgrade my 13 Pro just yet. the battery's at 75% now so I'll probably have it replaced with a new one.

To me, the "fold" would have to be absolute top-tier, markedly better than anything currently available. More durable for one.

And really, I don't like mini-size tablets, nor do I like Max/Plus size phones. I think to meet my needs, it would have to be a "dual-hinge" folder like the Huawei Mate XT that in "phone" mode is the size of a non-Plus iPhone, but unfolded is not-mini iPad size. And has *FULL* iPad functionality. Now that iPadOS has major improvements over iOS, I don't just want iPhoneOS-but-bigger-screen. When unfolded, I want the full iPadOS experience. (Even if it's only "base iPad" not "iPad Pro" level.)

I'd be willing to pay the premium of (iPhone price + iPad Pro price + a little more) for it. But I think there is zero chance of Apple releasing such a device this year alongside the iPhone 17. And the first generation or two will likely not be something I'd be willing to take a gamble on. So not this upgrade cycle, but next time.

I usually upgrade my phone every 3-5 years. Currently using a 13 Pro, so this year is an upgrade year. And my iPad is getting really long in the tooth - a 10.5" Pro that is now stuck on iPadOS 17. I really don't want to upgrade both in the same year, though, since I hang on to iPads longer. Next year I'll likely upgrade the iPad, and if by some miracle Apple releases an "iPhone 18 Fold" that meets all my needs? I might just upgrade my phone two years in a row and ditch the iPad.

How many times should this phone be folded to transform from a non-Plus iPhone to a normal-sized iPad?

EDIT: Just checked the Huawei Mate XT – okay, at least it works. Very thick in Phone size nevertheless.

I’m not convinced I want a foldable. If I want to upgrade next year, I’ll upgrade. I just know I’m really ready for an upgrade this year, and I’m not willing to wait another year.

I’ll upgrade when they put in a 1 inch sensor with variable aperture. After that there is nothing more they can do. But it will have to be 6.1 inch maximum. I’d rather go Android than having a larger phone than that.

I have the 14 pro max, not planning on upgrading anytime soon. Maybe if the fold comes out next year otherwise I’ll keep this until I need a new phone.

I have a 12 Pro, and ordinarily I upgrade about every five years. This would have been the year. However, I don't use an iPad (a Mac and a phone is as much as I want to keep track of), so I'm inclined to wait for a Fold. Combine that with the fact that I had to shell out this year for a Studio, and I need to wait until my finances recover some anyway.

For me, and "upgrade cycle" is "whenever I decide to upgrade," although I plan the finances for it years in advance. Unless my usage changes pretty drastically (like it did this year, with CAD causing the Studio), I can pretty easily go 5 years on a phone and 6-7 on a Mac.

I have a 12 at 80% battery, so a 17 it is.

Supposedly Apple will hold prices on a 17 standard initially, but with huge tariffs soon on India and China and the dropping of the cell phone exemptions, prices will have to go up. So a foldable iphone 18 will likely be $2000-$2500. Yikes!

I'm stuck on the 13 series, and will be until Apple either releases a new Mini or support for the mini ends. I will look at the foldable, if it's about the same size as a mini when folded I may get one, but $2000 for a mini is steeper than I would like to spend.
I was like this too but ended up moving to the 16 Pro last year. I just couldn’t deal with the 13 Mini’s battery life (though I still own it). I’ve managed to adjust to the Pro. It’s much heavier so I wish I’d have gone with the 16 but other than that, it’s been good. Battery life has been night and day for me.

I'm still rockin' my 12 pro and will wait and see what the 17 has to offer. If nothing exciting, I'll hold off for another year.
Aside from the condition of your battery life at this point, I would upgrade just for the massive camera improvements we've seen since the 12 Pro.

You'll finally get:
-Macro photography
-Better low-light pictures
-48MP sensor
-Dynamic Island
-120hz screen
-5X optical zoom
-Intelligent Photographic styles

Well worth the upgrade in my opinion.

Will be upgrading from the 15 pro to the 17 pro. In whatever color is the coolest really. Hope they bring out a surprise color this year.
Haha I was actually thinking of making a thread to ask how accurate the color rumors of previous years were.
I really want a new battery for my 14 Pro Max but if the 17 Pro gets a cool color I might just wait and get that…

Currently have a 15PM.
Considering the 17PM, but still undecided - may just wait for the 18.

No way I will get the folding iPhone - at least not the first generation anyways.

There's always something better just around the corner if you wait just a little longer...
I typically upgrade every 2-3 years. I'm currently using a 14 Pro Max, so I will almost certainly be upgrading this year.
But if a folding iPhone comes out next year and I think it's worth the upgrade, then I will upgrade. Only once before have a very upgraded after just 1 year, going from the 5s to the 6. I wanted the larger display and needed higher storage capacity, as my 5s was only 16GB.
