I'm still downloading the US/Canada version. I'll try to post a review once I get at least a day's worth of use.

Still think it's expensive considering the price of standalone units these days. Welcome arrival, but reckon Tomtom could have priced this far more aggressively.

e.g. Copilot UK - £25.99, Tomtom UK & Ireland - £59.99!

I agree - the price is way too high. Compare to larger screen stand alone units. The price will actually be higher when we factor in the mount, which I predict will be either $39 or $49.

Suspicious of this only post from a brand new user.
What is suspicious? all the user is saying is that they are disappointed with TomTom for the lack of an Eastern Europe TomTom app.

I'm more Suspicious of you tbh....

I think I'd rather use a standalone TomTom, but I'd be tempted to buy this if I had an iPhone. Just incase, like.

Oops, I read his statement without factoring the emoticon. But you're correct, you should be suspicious of me.

Still not sold on it yet... Will wait for reviews/comparisons...
The one saving grace will be that both my wife and i will get a copy for the price of one seeing as we both use the same itunes acct ;)

what are you talking about

I see where you guys are coming from but I think the whole point for everyone, including myself, is to have an all-in-one device. I for one dont want to carry a GPS, iPod and a phone around. :)

:: come on let be for real .. 30 dollars is resonable price but $100.. I already keep my GPS in my car so i can get it out at any time... in the even i don't have it i think google map will do wonder...but there is no way i am paying 100 for an app... i might as well add another 100 to get a better GPS for 200 bucks..

You can't make a justification for Tom Tom iPhone GPS app pricing it it over price.. there is no need for that. it's not going to sell. if people really want GPS they would spend 100 of standalone ...

I got a nuvi 260 for 120 last year for best buy.. bigger screen... see!!

Palm pre. Flas in October. Gps navigation included. Works great according to cnet.

Typical Apple. Logistics of licensing the maps my butt. They should have built in. No one will buy this or the pre is going to catch on. 3GS should hAve been the first iPhone but apple milks you and holds back on feature. CNt you guys see this.

Well, my decision is made after seeing the $99 price tag. I'll be sticking with my yearly subscription to Rand McNally Road Atlas in paperback form, along with Google Maps for backup. :D

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=326067542&mt=8

should get you to the uk and ireland app and it's £59.99

Love my argos vouchers now!!!! ;)

I brought £90 of vouchers for £60, sooo happy with that deal from Argos. I will most likely get the Euro Maps too, so, a nice little saving there.

Its a shame though as I'm going to Belgium on Wednesday and would have loved to have had the carkit and the maps to go with me. Looks like the standalone unit will have to take its place :(

Tomtom for UK and Ireland review

Ok first review of an app ever (so please bear with me!)

Downloaded from itunes app store went well although at 00.08 this morning (British summer time) I couldn’t find the app where others did, luckily 9 to 5 mac had a link to the Western Europe edition and I could follow that link to other software made by tomtom from there.

241mb file download, not too bad as I’d had one on an M3100 smartphone at nearer 1Gb, so no real problems with space even for the 8Gb peeps out there!

First opening app: tomtom logo comes up it then enters the ‘menu’ this is a simple graphical interface (see pics posted previously on this thread - at work so can’t upload my own!!!). Impression, nice non-cluttered screen, easy to use when sat in car ready to drive off.

Now the sections of the menu;

Navigate to: This opens up a usual tomtom list of options - Home, Favourite, Address, Recent destination, Point of interest, Postcode, Point on map and Contact. Slightly peeved that the postcode is so low down on list and point on map and contact are off the screen so you need to swipe the menu down, but hey can’t have everything and maybe updates will fix this.
Once you have selected where you need to go it will plot your route a tri[p from work to home (over 40 miles) took less than 15 seconds to plot, you get a route summary, press done and you get to the main screen. Navigating is using the standard tomtom image library (blue arrow for car, red line on road for route and colour scheme remains similar to others around). The routes are clear and crisp, yes there is no 3d like the navigon but when you are driving, you shouldn’t really be looking at the posh images on the screen. IQ routes are a clever idea, love the fact that at rush hour it’ll try to take me on a different route to avoid congestion (although not used it yet!)
POI’s can be shown on the map (if required) and speed cameras/traffic light cameras are present too. The bottom of the screen is your info on how far you have left to travel, speed current/limit for road time remaining til destination, time of arrival and next instruction. Major roads you are on are shown at the top of the screen, also the plus and minus zoom buttons which work well. Route recalculation is smooth and takes a few seconds.
Tapping the screen whilst navigating will bring you back to the main menu but with a route options tab now being present to find alternatives, demo route, instructions and map of route, this can also be entered by pressing the i icon in the bottom right of the screen and selecting options.

Next main menu options are enable sound/mute sound, night colours and 2d/3d maps, all self describing really (night colours is the all blue colour screen favoured by other tomtom units).

Advanced planning: like the navigate menu, this has options for address home etc, first input a from location then destination location and a route will be planned then it will ask for type of route (fastest shortest, avoid motorways, walking etc), then select when (day of week and time) and you will get a route planned for you to review.

Browse map: Like all tomtoms you can look at a map of the region you have (ie uk and Ireland for me) and you can pinch and drag just like google maps.

Manage favourites: here you can add/change favourites for quicker inputting later on.

Call POI: Here you can call POI’s that have numbers associated with them, press the number and the call dialogue opens, once calling the app closes and the standard calling screen launches and when the call finishes tomtom reopens, nifty methinks!

Tomtom car kit: Hmm, sends you to a page stating theat the car kit isn’t available yet, maybe in time this will have all settings for BT calling, iPod integration etc, but who knows!!

Last option on the menu, settings: Here you can change a limited amount of features, home destination, voices (currently using jane, but hopefully will soon be able to download other voices), map - where you can configure colours of screen in day and night mode, 2d orientation, show current street, streets on map, POI’s on map and types of POI shown. Next is route planning - safety cameras (on/off), IQ routes (on/off) default route type (fastest, avoid m’ways etc), toll roads, ferry crossings, HOV lanesand unpaved roads are also options to change. About gives info on the appwith licences and legal jargon, and a reset to default icon incase yoyu’ve really messed things up (dunno how you would but anyway, never mind)

Overall impression: Tomtom the iphone app is similar to the generic tomtom stand alone units (probably closer to the lower end models), if you like tomtom then this is the app for you, if you prefer snazzy images and need lane assist then this might not be your cup of tea (try navigon) if cost is an issue then try the co-pilot software, it is a shame there isn’t free ‘demo’ softwares out there to try an app to see if you like it, but I would say if you’ve been waiting for this app since it’s intro and you don’t balk at the price (BTW it works really well without the mount! Just have an in-car charger as it eats your battery on a long drive).

Any questions I’ll hopefully try to answer them!

Cheers!

Well I bought this as soon as I saw this post (australia version)

Your standard GPS unit is terrible. I used to have a top of the line, however after it baked in the sun and died I bought the mid range tom tom which set me back $300. The screen is horrible, I feel like I have to poke my fingers straight through the screen to get it to register anything.

For $99, this was a no brainer to get the terrific tomtom software on a terrific hardware platform. Im very happy.

Who was the person the said this has TTS?? I don't see TTS anywhere. Just standard voices.

After using TomTom devices for several years, this application feels very natural to use. Of course, I haven't driven anywhere yet :)

That test will happen later today.

I have noticed that the maps are not as up to date as my TomTom 720 though :( Some street names changed a while back around here and they are the old names on the iPhone app.

Guys, I was wondering... on the face of things TT does seem a tad over priced!

The only reason I'd still want to get it is for the TT attachment thingy - the features on this sound brilliant - BT, iPod functionality etc.

But would this added attachment also work with other navigation software? Navignon, Co-Pilot etc? If so, I think my minds made up :)

Thought this ad was funny. After reading 18 pages of TT App.:D
I was thinking $100-125 for the TT kit+ App. So I will have to see how much the TT mount cost before I make a choice.

$99? Could have been only $70 if......

....Apple didn't force the use of the App Store (and their 30% cut of the price) on the developers. Why couldn't TomTom sell this from their own servers and let everyone save 30%?

Anyone else mad about this price gouging from the App Store?

They are not gouging anyone. They chose the prices they did and went with it just as the others sold their apps for lower prices, less than half on a few, TomTom could have as well. They chose the price. You don't have to buy it.
