Tomtom for UK and Ireland review
Ok first review of an app ever (so please bear with me!)
Downloaded from itunes app store went well although at 00.08 this morning (British summer time) I couldnt find the app where others did, luckily 9 to 5 mac had a link to the Western Europe edition and I could follow that link to other software made by tomtom from there.
241mb file download, not too bad as Id had one on an M3100 smartphone at nearer 1Gb, so no real problems with space even for the 8Gb peeps out there!
First opening app: tomtom logo comes up it then enters the menu this is a simple graphical interface (see pics posted previously on this thread - at work so cant upload my own!!!). Impression, nice non-cluttered screen, easy to use when sat in car ready to drive off.
Now the sections of the menu;
Navigate to: This opens up a usual tomtom list of options - Home, Favourite, Address, Recent destination, Point of interest, Postcode, Point on map and Contact. Slightly peeved that the postcode is so low down on list and point on map and contact are off the screen so you need to swipe the menu down, but hey cant have everything and maybe updates will fix this.
Once you have selected where you need to go it will plot your route a tri[p from work to home (over 40 miles) took less than 15 seconds to plot, you get a route summary, press done and you get to the main screen. Navigating is using the standard tomtom image library (blue arrow for car, red line on road for route and colour scheme remains similar to others around). The routes are clear and crisp, yes there is no 3d like the navigon but when you are driving, you shouldnt really be looking at the posh images on the screen. IQ routes are a clever idea, love the fact that at rush hour itll try to take me on a different route to avoid congestion (although not used it yet!)
POIs can be shown on the map (if required) and speed cameras/traffic light cameras are present too. The bottom of the screen is your info on how far you have left to travel, speed current/limit for road time remaining til destination, time of arrival and next instruction. Major roads you are on are shown at the top of the screen, also the plus and minus zoom buttons which work well. Route recalculation is smooth and takes a few seconds.
Tapping the screen whilst navigating will bring you back to the main menu but with a route options tab now being present to find alternatives, demo route, instructions and map of route, this can also be entered by pressing the i icon in the bottom right of the screen and selecting options.
Next main menu options are enable sound/mute sound, night colours and 2d/3d maps, all self describing really (night colours is the all blue colour screen favoured by other tomtom units).
Advanced planning: like the navigate menu, this has options for address home etc, first input a from location then destination location and a route will be planned then it will ask for type of route (fastest shortest, avoid motorways, walking etc), then select when (day of week and time) and you will get a route planned for you to review.
Browse map: Like all tomtoms you can look at a map of the region you have (ie uk and Ireland for me) and you can pinch and drag just like google maps.
Manage favourites: here you can add/change favourites for quicker inputting later on.
Call POI: Here you can call POIs that have numbers associated with them, press the number and the call dialogue opens, once calling the app closes and the standard calling screen launches and when the call finishes tomtom reopens, nifty methinks!
Tomtom car kit: Hmm, sends you to a page stating theat the car kit isnt available yet, maybe in time this will have all settings for BT calling, iPod integration etc, but who knows!!
Last option on the menu, settings: Here you can change a limited amount of features, home destination, voices (currently using jane, but hopefully will soon be able to download other voices), map - where you can configure colours of screen in day and night mode, 2d orientation, show current street, streets on map, POIs on map and types of POI shown. Next is route planning - safety cameras (on/off), IQ routes (on/off) default route type (fastest, avoid mways etc), toll roads, ferry crossings, HOV lanesand unpaved roads are also options to change. About gives info on the appwith licences and legal jargon, and a reset to default icon incase yoyuve really messed things up (dunno how you would but anyway, never mind)
Overall impression: Tomtom the iphone app is similar to the generic tomtom stand alone units (probably closer to the lower end models), if you like tomtom then this is the app for you, if you prefer snazzy images and need lane assist then this might not be your cup of tea (try navigon) if cost is an issue then try the co-pilot software, it is a shame there isnt free demo softwares out there to try an app to see if you like it, but I would say if youve been waiting for this app since its intro and you dont balk at the price (BTW it works really well without the mount! Just have an in-car charger as it eats your battery on a long drive).
Any questions Ill hopefully try to answer them!
Cheers!
