eg - if i was walking home from the train station and i noticed 10 wanna be thugs i wouldn't crank open youtube and start watching some sweet videos with a huge grin from ear to ear and then wave it around to the group of clowns. But thats just me, i'm a paranoid person. However even if some jerks came up and followed me or something after seeing me use it i sure as hell wouldn't give it up without a fight.

That made me laugh so much! I don't think anyone would do that, I can just see it now!

I'd be a 3 if I had an iPhone, my phone is more expensive than the iPhone and I use it in the open, I can't imagine being too scared to use a phone in public.

But I think this is unique to the iPhone, no other phone has had so much hype and media attention. Phones are just phones at the end of the day, and everyone has one. But the iPhone? It's just that bit more attractive and obvious to the eye in my opinion.

Thanks for all the input! I do a radio show in the UK and think this might be a great area for discussion. :D

2 kinda

You know what is so great about the iPhone? I can keep so much information on it(text messages, email, contacts, calendar, etc)

You know what sucks about the iPhone? I can keep so much information on it(text messages, email, contacts, calendar, etc)

The iPhone isn't that much more expensive than the iPods of yore, but the key difference is that the iPhone carries a lot more personal data on it than most iPods. That is part of the reason to get the thing to begin with, but that also means that if it is stolen, it could be worth a lot more than the $400 you paid for it:eek:

So be careful with it!

Exactly my point, and so true!!! I have a key lock on but don't for one second think that will stop a thief getting at my personal stuff, maybe some chav, but not a pro

Anyone who is not a 3 has let their personal freedom be repressed by the fear mongering of the major media. The world is not out to get you, you will all be fine.

Really.:)

+1

I don't understand this to be honest. I have a $400 iPod ($400 @ the time I bought it) and never thought not to use it. I bought a cell phone, I plan to use it. Even buying something like an unlocked SLVR was $300 at one time and I never feared using that. Maybe I am naive and perhaps I've grown up in a world much better than the one many of you seem to fear, but I can't imagine not whipping out my phone to make a call, check e-mail, or even take a call in public. Really now...you should change your voice mail to something like sorry I can't pick up the phone right now because I live in a state of perpetual fear and my phone is so sexy that I can't simply stand the thought of someone seeing me use it so when I am at home in a dark corner under cover I'll call you back.

Seems rather silly to me. Do the people who picked #1 and #2 really live in a land where pulling out your cell phone, putting it to your ear could result in someone actually swiping it? I was in London last year and never once considered concealing my camera, phone, or iPod.

I live in a city so I'm always aware of my surrounds. This however does not limit when or where I use my iphone. If I'm going to get mugged, its going to happen whether or not I use my iphone.

I wear a bullet proof vest, carry heat and talk to myself whenever I use the iphone. No one would dare bother me.

<end of sarcasm>
:D

Im #3 for sure. Let them steal it. I have it covered for what I paid including taxes with State Farm ($545 for the 4gb model) with no deductible. Id get $545 and go buy an 8gb model for $435 with tax included.

OK that's a bit silly! My point is that the iPhone carries a lot of personal information, and I certainly would not want someone else to get their hands on it. If I get a text I reply, if I get a call I answer etc etc, but I just don't whip it out and flash it around, I try and be a little discrete about it.

I think this is all down to experience. I live in Bristol in the UK atm, and have had a few things stolen before. I live in a nice area, Bristol isn't all that bad, but I have learnt from my experiences. If you have never had experience of these things, then I suppose you wouldn't really think about it.

i dont ever really think about not using my phone in public. I just use if it were any old $100 phone.

I am very cautious about not dropping it or scratching it though, i am contantly worried about dropping the damn thing

That a the iphone is expensive, no one can deny that
That the iphone carries lots of personal information, no one can deny that.
The the iphone has received way too much media attention, no can deny that.
That some iphones have been stolen in street just like that, no one can deny that , again.

it's not a question of personal attitude, it's a question of common sense: one simply has to be careful.
Everybody could show off their iphone. That's pretty easy and had nothing to do with being paranoid...but rather with being rich enough not to care at all about a stolen iphone and naive enough to show off a device that contains personal data.

And it's not just with the iPhone but any expensive phones.
Just yesterday my gf told me how this guy was watching her Blackberry Pearl as she was calling me on the bus. And as she put it back in her handbag the guy was then watching the handbag...She got that phone the day before ( a couple day ago now)
Now imagine the attention an iphone can get in public...

Anyway I'm not the kind of guy who needs to receive too much attention from people around me. i'm a number 2 on that list i guess and as stated before, i believe that after the Christmas Holidays the iphone will have become more like a common phone because lots of people will probably go ahead and buy it. Right now all the teens would probably just die to get it and, as i work in a highschool, let me tell you, they surely won't hesitate to steal yours if they can. let's just wait for Mum and Dad to give them the money they need to grab their own

That's totally going to be my next answerphone greeting. :)

I'm writing this on the train and one guy has been staring at the phone since I got on.

he's just trying to avoid looking at a person (this being a big no no in glasgow) and has ended up looking at an object.

Sorry, I was just trying to confirm that you were in fact on MacRumors...
I was also trying to determine when the best time to mug you was.

Sorry to do this but I'm a number 4.

As I live in Canada and have an uber-expensive Rogers data plan on my iPhone I'm scared to use it in case I end up with a monstrously expensive data bill.

But I do not hesitate to pull it out and use it wherever I want to. And that includes my iPhone (I just have to watch the data cost).

Cheers.

Just buy a replacement set of earphones, preferably black. Then keep it in your pocket. If someone calls, you can answer it without taking it out and if your listening to music, peeps in the know won't think it's an iphone, just some sony ericsson music phone rubbish.
