I remember sometime around 2002 I was in London with my first 2G iPod and I walked around everywhere with the thing clearly visible and my headphones on - I didn't even have a case for it - and never thought twice about what tube stop I was near, neighborhood I was in or anything else of the sort.

Though I remember thinking after the fact that I was probably being overly optimistic. Of course, I think a lot of folks back then didn't even know what iPods were. I remember showing it to some mates and they were blown away that it could hold, like, 4000 songs!!

I'm a 2. I use it everywhere except the metro mainly, the metro is damn ghetto and I don't want to get jumped while playing iPhysics or Pokemon Emerald. Hell, they'd probably think it's a gameboy and jump me all the same.

if your listening to music, peeps in the know won't think it's an iphone, just some sony ericsson music phone rubbish.

M.

Haha :D I have got to show that to my mate. He swears by Sony Ericsson and hates iPods/iPhones. We always have big slagging matches over it (all in good humor of course), and no matter what I say I can't convince him  His loss!!!

Sorry to do this but I'm a number 4.

As I live in Canada and have an uber-expensive Rogers data plan on my iPhone I'm scared to use it in case I end up with a monstrously expensive data bill.

But I do not hesitate to pull it out and use it wherever I want to. And that includes my iPhone (I just have to watch the data cost).

Cheers.
LMFAO I may have been the only one who picked up on this dirty little comment! Or maybe it's me who is dirty and in that case, well I digress!

I think you're the only one that got it Jessica. Either that or the others got it and chose to ignore it - and who can blame them?

It was aimed at you anyway.

Cheers.

Im probably a 2 1/2. I am VERY protective of my phone, but I take it everywhere...

Exactly. I tend not to take it out on the street or in the bus, although I'm always listening to music with the standart headphones.

I would say I am a three... I don't care who knows/sees that I have one. Heck, I even catch myself leaving it sit out on a table at school while I go to the bathroom...

This should be a poll and I am a 3

really just about any phone can be stolen. only the iphone is virtually useless after theft.

First of all the sim-chip would fail after the person reports it stolen if cingular does not go as far as to use the sim chip to low jack your phone.

Then as soon as they connect it via itunes guess what apple has been told that serial number was stolen. Special firmware update just for you. BRICK.

Could it be stolen yes but there are so many things preventing the person from benifiting from it. even if they resort to ebay to sell it they will just mail a dead phone and never see any of the money due to ebay's fraud policies (and by the way even if they got the payment under the table 400 is still grand larceny and ebay will press charges)

Though no robber will think this far into robbing me, so I sleep better knowing that if my iphone is stollen all i have to do is make one phone call to cluster **** the person who robbed me.

I'd say im a 2.5.
I care very much about my things, for it's my hard earned money, and being in college, you don't have a lot of it. I just find, that like with my MBP, i take very good care of my things, but they somehow get broken, or have defects, which are completely out of my hands. It just isn't fair, for many people trash their things, and they work perfectly, but i take care of them, and they have many many issues. Oh well, who would have figured. But yeah, i just use my iPhone when i need to.

I live and work in downtown Ft. Myers, FL. When I am walking to and from work at night, I don't take it out. During the day i'd say i'm a 3, but at night, i'm a 2. There are plenty of people that want iPhones but maybe can't afford it. I am sure if I was waving it around at night something would go down.

I am number 3. I just use it. I don't bother wiping off the screen much anymore. The freshness of watching videos on it has worn off and it's been a few months since I last viewed one on the phone.

If I dropped my iPhone today and it broke, I would go get another first thing in the morning, no second thoughts.

Edit: I rarely use it around allot of people so theft isn't a problem. When I use it at work, it's around a few people and they are more worried about using their own phones to notice mine.

you havent covered all bases.

you forgot a very large group... #4

those of us who love to use it in public and make others jealous wooooooo!!!

I try not to use it in public cause people like to make fun of it. "Stupid iPhone, etc. etc."

love it!

sorry I can't pick up the phone right now because I live in a state of perpetual fear and my phone is so sexy that I can't simply stand the thought of someone seeing me use it so when I am at home in a dark corner under cover I'll call you back.

like the other poster I just absolutely love this. it is quite humorous. I hope that you don't mind if i use it when I get mine in March.
I am a big 3. My husband says that I am a danger to myself and that I don't watch out for anything. Looking at life through rose color glasses real nice.

i am 3 also i pay the extra money for insurance as i may drop it or lose it and hopefully if they update it and down the line mine breaks i will get a new model

As others said, it depends. It seems the hype has diminished, but I still get the occasional "Is that an iPhone?" meaning it's still an attention getter.

Just buy a replacement set of earphones, preferably black. Then keep it in your pocket. If someone calls, you can answer it without taking it out and if your listening to music, peeps in the know won't think it's an iphone, just some sony ericsson music phone rubbish.

The black headphone trick is a bit known as a mask for iPods. Not to mention that iPods are likely being listened to over other mp3 players - at least in NY.

Where did you get this info?

My boss recently had his iPhone stolen, and according to ATT ,the Apple store, AND apple care, once another SIM card is inserted, the iPhone is good as new.

Ever heard of stealing bike parts? Yes the iPhone may be difficult to use if stolen, but a thief doesn't care. His objective is to sell it. A European visitor in NY bought an iPhone in Chinatown that didn't work. He bought it in a tourist trap store. People prey on that type of naive buyer and getting YOUR/MY iPhone is step 1. Dateline ran an entire special on the rise of iPod theft. Do you think iPhones are immune?? I do not care where you live, be careful.

Im a #2.5, I will "show it off" when in a safe place, but I have in mind that an iPhone in Costa Rica is very rare and thieves might be attracted more to that. Im getting some pepper spray, just to have some protection.
I will say that if you're in a dangerous place put it in silent don't answer it and don't be stupid, then if your in a "safe" environment, enjoy your iPhone!
