It's gasoline you all are worked up about. GASOLINE! Suppose one day they put a limit on how much gasoline you can use in a month. If you went over your limit you'd have to walk everywhere instead.
My point is that cell phones and wireless devices are becoming more integrated into our lives each passing year ("green" arguments aside). Just because it might seem insignificant to you doesn't mean that it is to everyone else. Like the article's example, some people use their phone data as part of their business and livelihood. When it's rendered nearly useless, it makes a huge impact.
And yes the contract states they can make changes. But that doesn't say specifically that in the future they will put limitations on their unlimited plans. If people had known that when they signed the contract, I'm sure most would have been turned away from it.
