I mean if they include it now what stick will they dangle in front of you to update next year?

One of the reasons why I just bought an Android Phone was because of touch id. Apple lost a customer because of their refusal to look at the situation we are in. And I'm sure they have been developing this phone for most of the time we are in the pandemic. The easiest solution would be to make the power button the touch ID like on the Ipad. The fact that Apple doesn't do that is inexcusable to me.

Under the screen fingerprint sensor is being used in other products?

Yes, though not by Apple.

But it is not an implementation that I, or seemingly anyone else on this thread who prefer or need Touch ID, particularly care that much about. We would all be happy with it being on the power button, the way Apple provide it on iPad. Sorry if that was not clear.

If Apple had done that then they could still have used moving the sensor under the screen as a gimmick to attract people next year, but without putting people off this year.

My initial questioning was what authentication methods are used by the various android manufactures for financial transaction authentication?

Bad idea putting the FPS on the power button of an iphone. Many cases cover up the power button...and that may be one reason Apple choose not to support that.

Apple will always put people off. Apple doesn't care. They would rather do it right (or to the best of their ability) than throw in tech and get the sales for specs sake.

No idea, I am not an Android user. Apple use Touch ID to authorize payments on all devices which support that technology, though. If Apple's implementation is good enough for Apple, then it is also still good enough for Apple.

And as they said at the keynote regarding the iPad mini "it is secure," when all they could offer for Face ID on the new iPhones was that it is "more secure than the competition." And I am always weary of relative comparisons given in place of absolute statements.

I really do not follow that argument, Apple has never restricted how they design an iPhone in order to remain compatible with cases of older models. Buttons have moved around, ports changed, the space needs to be cut out of cases for the rear camera have grown They do not hold off on features simply because they would require third parties to redesign cases.

But if Apple think putting Touch ID in the power button is them not "doing it right" then that is a pretty damning statement on their iPad range. You would have hoped it was ready last year when thy introduced it, but if not you would certainly want to think they have resolved any problems before adding it to a new product this year.

And I would argue it is more "right" on an iPhone as the side button of an iPhone 13 is where a user's thumb would normally be when holding the device right-handed, so it would be an instinctive and comfortable location for authenticating. (At least on normal sized phones, I do not have Max hands to know how people hold those!)

I would say the usage of an ipad is different than the usage of an iphone. I rarely touch the power button of my iphone. So doing so would now be an extra step.

Its actually used alot, if you want to make a screen print you need to press 2 buttons at the same time the power + the touch.
And it needs to be held very long before the iphone powers off.
As far as i know there is no function on the short pressing the power button, at least nothing happens on my phone.
So i disagree also about the case theory, all cases i ever saw have the power button free as its one of the most important buttons so again a non argument.
They have/had no reason not to put touch id back into the iphone for any generation they released, they simply want to FORCE people to use their new toy the face-id.
Because i learned now that they started using after apple removed the touch id, yes i asked all my friends and i asked also why they do not pay with face-id it takes too long and is a hassle todo. Its not simply press a "button" like touch id you have to open it then need to id yourself and guess what it does not really work on ideal terminals as fast as touch id. so that is why they do not use it to pay its much more handle the phone before you can pay and fails often.
Also remember apple loves collecting all data they can on you and they go through great lenghts todo so, if you believe they would not store your data then stop dreaming.
Because they do the exact same as M$ or G$ which actually collects everything you do, by that i mean REALLY everything you do.
Why else would it constant send a steady stream of data, did one of you use a data tracker to see what is all send from you devices towards apple ... my guess is in 99% NOPE.
How often is something safed onto the icloud did you ever check... i think most never check besides the ones with limited data contracts.
I admit on the phone its less than the M$ and G$ sends but still alot is saved on icloud and that is easy to tap into for apple.
They actually have to give access to the different country security forces if they demand to see the data as well.
That alone tells you that they have full access no matter what.... But in general they mostly collect when and how late you pee and if you bark to the phone or not ;).
I am not gonna tell what is collected or not, i worked for a super large phone company so i leave it to your vision/thoughts what they do collect or not.
Those special forces can access all data they want almost everywhere, only the countries who do not like the USA and friends try to block them. Like china, russia, and so on.
So no matter what companies tell you they always have access to your data, no matter what or where.
The only way to not share data is not use a SMART phone which is sharing everything you do with the makers, by that i mean all the other smart phones on the planet.
Anyway long story short there is no reason why apple did remove the touch other than forcing people to use the face toy, as i learned from all my friends non of them used it ever.. after the removal of the touch they had no choice < period >
PS smart tv act the same way especially if they have microphone and camera build in to collect even more, or if you have the smart home toys from Am$ and G$. i hope you understood my steno company names because they tell you exact what they do with your data... if you guessed it right one bonus point if not try again and send me your data so i can see what answer i need to give you on that topic.
It big business including the smart watch which actually collect tons of medical data as well, and you give it away for free, super smart from these giants... They actually know your probably gonna die sooner than you yourself or your doctors.

Correct. Apple want to migrate away from a dedicated home button with touch id to save screen real estate. Face ID was the solution.

As I noted in a prior thread, the above, while it may be the opinion of you and your friends is absolutely false. Face id for apple pay can be activated for about 1min30secs prior to paying.
Because they do the exact same as M$ or G$ which actually collects everything you do, by that i mean REALLY everything you do.

I guess the keyword is "guess".

Do you have some citations for this or the above some hyperbole based on an opinion.
I am not gonna tell what is collected or not, i worked for a super large phone company so i leave it to your vision/thoughts what they do collect or not.
Because you can't tell what Apple is collecting, but you do know what the isps and carriers are collecting?

Proof that any of my data is accessible without due process.
The only way to not share data is not use a SMART phone which is sharing everything you do with the makers, by that i mean all the other smart phones on the planet.
Totally, go off the grid if one doesn't want to be tracked.
Anyway long story short there is no reason why apple did remove the touch other than forcing people to use the face toy, as i learned from all my friends non of them used it ever.. after the removal of the touch they had no choice < period >
Exactly, Apple moved tech forward.

Do you have proof that anybody really sees or hears voice or camera data in an unauthorized way, or is it just some conspiracy theory.
It big business including the smart phones which actually collect tons of medical data as well, and you give it away for free, super smart from these giants... They actually know your probably gonna die sooner than you yourself or your doctors.
How does a smart phone collect medical data if it's not enabled to being with. Who is it being given away to? How does this data correlate to your heath and who is doing the interpreting?

I think touch id under glass will return to the iphone when Apple deems it is ready.

You really should do your own investigations, but i am sure you do not.
Second i start to believe you work for apple as you seem to be keen to protect the company against all odds.
Apple is not always right in their choices and for real many of their choices are not so good who do not want new things or just see no need for that like me.
So 24 friends do not want to use it and you keep saying i need to proof the opposite.
24 people say its not better and you are the only person who claims it is a improvement ( going forward )
I pay within 4 seconds with touch id ( that 4 seconds is the slowest ).... how long does it take you from start to finish.
It would not surprise me if you dodge again a serious answer, the 1,5 minute upfront does not help either how long does it take you to pay in total your never gonna pay in 4 seconds with face id absolutely NEVER.
All have told me exactly why they do not use it, because its 100% NOT an improvement, nobody besides you made a statement that it is.
The 1,5 minutes does not help either it takes more time to open face id and prepare it for pay than i need to instant pay in less then 4 seconds
That is why they do not use it only some use it to unlock their phone, but most don't either.
Most open their phone with pincode because thats after touch id the fastest to get in your phone.
Touch id is absolute the fastest to use for open the phone to pay and other stuff at places there is nothing faster.
So when you really want to see how much data is send to apple install a proper firewall which is capable to log all including where it goes and how long and how much data is send.
While some names are kinda looking non related to apple, there are forums where you can find answers on that.
When you have a proper firewall you can see alot more as well.
You would be surprised, but again i am sure you will not
Because of the way you answer me you think your the one who knows all.
But i am not gonna break laws for you, if you really want to know do go into the tracking and scanning and see yourself, but i guess you will dodge that as well, with the same silly answers

That’s a pity. We know Apple want things to be working well and all, but I just saw a 6.5” average looking Android phone on the bus a few days ago. An owner just put her finger on a drawn circle area on a screen, it responded with a ripple effect and the phone unlocked. Magic! And it was not even a high end phone. I wish Apple could pull something like this.

For me I press the home button twice to activate Apple Pay, choose the card and then hold it up to the terminal to pay. All in about 10 seconds or less.

You really should do your own investigations, but i am sure you do not.

Using the reply button always helps. A typical internet debating tactic is to throw shade at the poster, in an attempt to discredit. Has anyone suggested you work for Samsung due to your criticisms of Apple?
Apple is not always right in their choices and for real many of their choices are not so good who do not want new things or just see no need for that like me.
I give you that, Apple isn't always right, but seems to learn from their mistakes.
So 24 friends do not want to use it and you keep saying i need to proof the opposite.

Anecdotally your 24 friends do not want to use face id. Out of the hundreds of millions of iphones that have face id what is the percentage that don't use face id? To answer your question, to pay for a purchase with Apple Pay on my xs max takes less than a blink of an eye. I authenticate prior to check-out and then when it's my turn hold the phone to the reader. Done.
It would not surprise me if you dodge again a serious answer, the 1,5 minute upfront does not help either how long does it take you to pay in total your never gonna pay in 4 seconds with face id absolutely NEVER.

Okay, you don't agree with my opinion. Fair enough.
The 1,5 minutes does not help either it takes more time to open face id and prepare it for pay than i need to instant pay in less then 4 seconds
False equivalency. While one is waiting in the checkout line, authentication to face id does not stop customers behind one from being checked out.
That is why they do not use it only some use it to unlock their phone, but most don't either.
Your using the word "most" disingenuously...you don't know.
Most open their phone with pincode because thats after touch id the fastest to get in your phone.

Not true as said above.
So when you really want to see how much data is send to apple install a proper firewall which is capable to log all including where it goes and how long and how much data is send.
I want my icloud data to sync. Passwords, photos and whatever else. There is nothing subversive about it.

The issue with your posts, is you believe you understand the totality of what is going on behind the scenes with the software.

Most of the above is hyperbole with no substance. IMO, to prove a point, one should use facts and not generalized critical statements that have no context.

I would say the usage of an ipad is different than the usage of an iphone. I rarely touch the power button of my iphone. So doing so would now be an extra step.

But I assume you hold your iPhone when you use it. Even if not, an iPhone is predominantly a touch operated device so you already have fingers it. Sure briefly moving one of them a fraction of an inch is a step, but so much so it would be some major problem?

But the thing that has been repeated ad nauseam is that no one wants to force you to Touch ID. Nobody wants you to have to make that extra stop. Nobody has called for the removal of Face ID. It is only people like you who want to tell those of use for whom that is not a good technology that we should be going out of our way and making the extra steps instead.

Power button is covered by a case, in many cases. Touch id under power button would not be viable on an iphone.

As shocking as it may sound, they can now make cases where the power button is not covered! Just like how some iPhone and iPad cases has gaps for the buttons. Just like how all iPhone cases have a gap for the mute toggle. It is amazing what science can do now.

And not only that, because of the redesigned camera area and button positions, existing iPhone case are not compatible with the iPhone 13 range . Anyone buying a new iPhone would need a new case designed specifically for it, so had Apple included TouchID on the power button it would not have caused any problems to anyone.

Case manufacturers had to redesign all their cases anyway.

Consumers buying thew phone have had to buy new cases anyway.

You would not have been required to make any extra steps.

As much as this issues is subjective, as much as Apple could raise technological argument, it is a matter of objective fact that there is nothing about incompatible cases which make Touch ID unviable.

What is also an objective fact is that Apple have lost a sale from me, going by this thread from others, and are unlikely to see one in the future based on their current requirements. As I said earlier in the thread, the best technology is the one which best provides for its purpose, and Face ID does not best serve me. Maybe Apple do not care about my custom anyway.

It is just a great shame there are only two realistic smartphone options, because I truly dislike Android, the interface, and apps. The effort it took just to add a cardDav server on that platform was excruciating. So it means being stuck with the unusability of Apple hardware just because of the usability of iOs. Something bizarrely cheered on by fans who oppose them making things more difficult for other people to use, even when it would have no effect on them.

Everybody uses their phone differently. Why should I accept a stupid design decision by Apple to put touch id in the power button? Nobody is calling for implementation of touch id in the power button, that simply doesn't make sense on an iphone, imo.
As shocking as it may sound, they can now make cases where the power button is not covered! Just like how some iPhone and iPad cases has gaps for the buttons. Just like how all iPhone cases have a gap for the mute toggle. It is amazing what science can do now.
Why should I be forced to get a new case for a design decision by apple, whereby Apple knows people cover their power button. That use case doesn't make any sense.

But considering a see quite a few cases where the power button is covered, I think Apple knows this and doesn't want to implement something that is deemed "not Apple like" at the outset.

I do not believe Apple thinks it has a hold on customers. It strives to do it's best and in the process is aware they may lose customers. they would rather lose customers, imo, than implement a feature that will come back to haunt them.

We each have our definition of unusability. I do not view my xs max as being unusable in the least. YMMV.

Nobody is calling for implementation of touch id in the power button

You are replying on a thread where many of us have called for that. I have seen articles on other sites

Why should I be forced to get a new case for a design decision by apple

Ask Apple, as that is what they are making you do with their iPhone 13 range. It is what they always do.

they would rather lose customers, imo, than implement a feature that will come back to haunt them.

I am trying to let this argument die, but I have to ask how would Touch ID on the power button haunt them?

We each have our definition of unusability. I do not view my xs max as being unusable in the least. YMMV.

Which is precisely our point.

Except that none of us want to make the iPhone less usable for you, yet you think it should be less usable for us. Which is what it became by removing Touch ID.

I bet TouchID is in reality as popular as the mini model phones. Loud forum-goers go loud, but the general public cares little.

Face ID is way superior to Touch ID. Wash your hands, and you have to wait until they are 100% dry so you can unlock your phone, etc.. I remember those days and don't want them back.

Masks are also a temporary thing, trust me.
Weird… I hear people talk about problems they had with Touch ID.. hardly ever happened.. Face ID however, too sunny, wrong angle, masks constant problems.. entering code is annoying bc you sit there waiting for the phone to recognise it doesn’t recognise before it offers the option.. yes a setting change could help, but then it’s always code entry which is annoying. Why not have both like previous comments.. then everyone is happy.

I'm getting tired of waiting for Apple to catch up with the competition. My biggest bug bear right now is wearing face masks and not being able to authenticate Apple Pay in stores. I've never found FaceID to be more convenient than TouchID... Fix it.
?? If you’re not able to authenticate with faceid after 2 tries it literally defaults the authentication to the users passcode which will validate the transaction or request be it an iOS function or an Apple Pay purchase. You’re being over dramatic. I think apple is the most ridiculous company on the planet but to try and act as if anything they sell isn’t leading the market in its respective category is just you lying to yourself.
They’re literally so far ahead of the competition that they can put the same phone out for 4 straight years with minimal if any noticeable changes and come year 5 that model is still able to outperform the majority of android flagships.

Case in point, The iPhone 6s is currently better performing and useful than 85% of android flagships in 2021 and it was released in 2015.

With the exception of Touch ID being added to the 6s and up, iPhone 6, 6s, 7, 7s, and 8 were essentially the same phone spanning 5 separate September releases and despite the fact that you were basically getting nothing new the iPhone was still the most purchased cell device in the US each of those years.
Androids worldwide numbers come from its low price point in countries which don’t want to spend absurd amounts of money on a cellphone like the US does annually.

Foolish move Apple, but hey, I’m not buying it regardless if it spies on me.
Any ****ing phone that has a connection to a functioning cell service is spying on you. Do you have any clue how a cell phone call works? Your device is constantly broadcasting its availability with the number assignment that is tied to your personal info unless you buying burner phones regularly.

The reason you can receive a call is because the towers are able to transmit the incoming call to your device by automatically searching for whether or not it’s currently active across any supported cell tower and if it is then it routes the call to your number which is constantly screaming out (here I am here I am while it’s active on a cell tower) which makes your phone ring allowing you to answer the call and communicate with whomever it is on the other end.
In order for the process to work the cell towers have to constantly track your whereabouts and decide which tower to move between as you travel from one place to the next. And there’s a running record that’s kept which logs plent of info that can be used to convict you in court of a suspected crime based on the locations that are logged as you are bounced from each cell tower.

How long do we have to wait for USB-C? For once I’m glad EU is stepping in to stop this nonsense.
Imagine having 1 cable and charger for iPhone, iPad, AirPods and Mac

Apple isn’t going to put usb c on the iPhone. There’s no reason to do so with the current manner it functions. The reason the brought it to iPad is because they’re trying to make the iPad function more like a traditional laptop which requires expansion ports that need to use a standard connection.

The iPhone isn’t meant to be anything other than a phone. Plus if they abandon the lightning connector then they wouldn’t make millions in royalties from all those places that pay the licensing fee to produce certified chafer cables

I would agree with you if you reversed the order. Face ID still fails daily, and having to wear my watch to improve it is a bandaid solution. Since masks aren’t going away anytime soon, at least in the US, adding Touch ID now would allow people to use the entire devices life expectancy while still wearing a mask.
I bet you 100 dollars if you tilt your phone towards your face when Face ID is active instead of holding it like you do when you’re texting then you faceid issue will magically be gone. The system relies on 2 cameras a light senso and proximity sensor in the notch at the top of the screen. If you don’t hold the device near vertical then the infrared sensor can’t properly project the dots on to your face which is how it verifies the person on the other end is the same who set up the process originally. There are a few hundred to 1000 individual dots that are used to detect the slightest change in shape and measurements across the projected dots as they hit your faces features which results in specific measurements between the dots that can only be a match to what is likely one individual alive on the planet.

I don’t understand why FaceID is touted as being superior. It isn’t. It’s less convenient and very flaky. I consistently have to tap “try again” and I’m fed up with it. I just want my fingerprint scanner back and an OLED screen.
Because you don’t understand how it works and your holding the phone at an angle when attempting to unlock and the dot projector is unable to find your face with enough detail to be certain that it’s verified upon attempting so it tells you to move closer which is basically saying hold the phone vertically and be sure that the notch on the screen is level with your eyes and the phone is about a foot from your face.

Follow those steps and it’ll work every time. The infrared sensor can literally see your face in total darkness as well as extreme brightness and both with have no impact on the process successfully verifing a persons face matches the original

Even if that were true, the fact is that FaceID remains awkward while using the phone for payments. I have to angle my face down to the level of the phone held at waist level in Trader Joe's for example. TouchID would solve this problem. FaceID is great for most cases (and when paired with a Apple Watch it even works well enough with a mask), but let's not pretend that having TouchID also wouldn't be a welcome improvement.
You always hold it the same way you had to hold it when you set it up. If the notch on the screen isn’t parallel with an imaginary line drawn from the top of your forehead to bottom of your chin then it’s possibly going to fail depending on how far the notch on the display is tilted away from that area.
Faceid isn’t comparing pictures of your face. It’s projecting about 1000 tiny infrared dots across the surface area of your face and what results is unique measurements between each individual dots location due to the features of your face when the light is then positioned in key areas suck as the lips eyes nose and cheeks. The measurements between the dots will be near completely unique depending on who’s face is being measured

Even before the pandemic, my Face ID had a miss rate of about 20%… that went up to about 90% when wearing sunglasses. Compare that to Touch ID, which consistently had a miss rate of about 1-3% for me.

I’m not saying get rid of Face ID. Some people love it and more power to them, but for me it’s busted. I want the option for Touch ID.
If you pull the mask below your nose it’ll work while wearing one.

I understand exactly how it works. The “angle” problem is just another reason I dislike it, not the initial reason I find it doesn’t work well. It also doesn’t work well in bright sunshine.

TouchID has none of these issues.

Don’t forget that you also have to hold the device farther away than during actual usage. So what you are saying is it can work if you go out of your way to hold it different?
