Why does everyone care so much about Touch ID the pandemic is over soon in the U.K. you don’t need to wear masks anymore
I find Touch ID more intuitive when using ApplePay. Instead, with Face ID you're moving your device towards the payment device, then re-aiming at your face to authorize. One motion - device to payment device with finger on the touch point is smoother and way more intuitive to me.

Looks like this year will be another pass for me. My XS is getting long in the tooth. With this and the spyware, for the first time ever Android is looking tempting.
Ah yes, everyone knows that virtuous, private android doesn't spy on you!

Nice strawman. Not everything can be perfect on day one but it's clear Apple tries pretty hard to get things right. Of the 15 or so million macbooks Apply sells a year, how many had keyboard issues? Do you have any data to put that problem in perspective?
When a statement is made such as the one made by our fellow poster, it is so obviously untrue it has to be challenged. So put your straw man quips away and face reality.

Never had a problem with FaceID, those that do may want to re-set it up? But I still would love to have the mask-authorization work for all FaceID cases. Just unlocking the phone is really not that useful when so many apps are finally implementing it. Perhaps on an app-by-app basis (like FaceID is now (there are switches for each one)) if you have high security apps you don't want the watch to be the 'gatekeeper' for? And, yes, looks like there will be parts of the world where masks will be around for quite a while (momentary removing it as a workaround or not!).

I don’t know if I’ve ever had an iPhone for more than 3 years, but this news may make my XS go another year.

A lot of diffrent opinion and experiance :)

For me touch id on macbook m1 works 100% of the time, zero issues , dont use faceid on mac .

Touch id on previous iphone worked pretty much everytime and compared to most android way superior for me at least.

But if you have worn out hands or something similar then faceid or pin is way to go.

In my experience Touch ID fails more times than Face IDo_O. I can't see why Apple would bring back Touch ID in new iPhones specially the PRO models. Apple don't go back if something isn't a big disaster like the MB keyboards was once.

Let's not forget that they removed the 3D Touch screens because of space and cost. Face ID is one of the best things about the iPhone/iPad.
IF and only IF they bring it back it would be a hybrid solution with Face ID.

It is not just about the pandemic but that is the typical response from someone who has not experienced having both on one device. It is super convenient. During the summer FaceID is annoying because it does not work with my expensive sun glasses outside = TouchID. In winter, I cannot use TouchID due to wearing gloves = faceID
Agreed!

Why don't they just ship a TouchID power button similar to the one added to the iPad? I'd love to have both FaceID and TouchID at least on the Pro iPhone to unlock the phone while wearing a mask. TouchID under the display would be great, but the one on the power button would be better than nothing and it doesn't cost too much since they're shipping it on the cheaper iPads...

Exactly my point. what is wrong with TouchID in power button? I would prefer that over the in-screen TouchID

Even if that were true, the fact is that FaceID remains awkward while using the phone for payments. I have to angle my face down to the level of the phone held at waist level in Trader Joe's for example. TouchID would solve this problem. FaceID is great for most cases (and when paired with a Apple Watch it even works well enough with a mask), but let's not pretend that having TouchID also wouldn't be a welcome improvement.

because touchid its better anyway considering phone must be operated only with fingers. different thing is pc where faceid can be useful as u can unlock it in no time and use mouse immediately, instead of searching for the touchid button on the keyboard. ok yes u operate pc with fingers anyway, but u have different input methods other than keyboard. only problem with touch id is during hot summers as it dont works or works bad if fingers are sweaty

I find it so funny that almost half of the people here hate Touch ID that much. Yes, you can prefer having FaceID, but how is a phone better with FaceID only rather than FaceID + TouchID? I didn't expect under the screen TouchID, but TouchID on the power button would be a nice temporary solution (it might take Apple 2-3 more years to get TouchID under the screen)

A bit of a shame as it would have been nice to have alongside Touch ID, however, I still plan on buying the iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max regardless of this change. Face ID will be fine 99% of the time, and with restrictions easing in shops without a legal mask requirement, we should be okay.

Most people are on a 2 year cycle and looking for a reason to upgrade from the 11 pro max (or variant). I'm not seeing a huge reason to upgrade at the moment ... could be a bad year for Apple if that is the case with everyone

Sounds like you you hate to use your iPhone. When I use Apple Pay, I double click the side button, Face ID scans my face, then the credit card is on the screen, after that I use my hand freely for minutes as long as the screen is on, which it is until you pay.. then I reach out to the NFC Payment reader at any store. and its done. Whats the issue here? Don't really understand your point at all.

We don’t need Touch ID anymore than we need to bring back floppy drives. Move on. Move along. Literally nothing to see here. Face ID is a million times smarter, faster and more convenient. Finding one use scenarios where Touch ID is ‘better’ is not a reason to build all that tech into a phone again. That is all.
