Why would anyone want Apple or any other commercial company to have their fingerprints?
??

The biometric data for both FaceID and TouchID are stored on device. Not even Apple has access to it.
But yes, I agree with you - if companies want my data, they need to pay me. After all, they are monetizing it...

Disappointing, always having more options on ways to unlock your phone is convenient. Look for it on the iPhone 14.

Why does everyone care so much about Touch ID the pandemic is over soon in the U.K. you don’t need to wear masks anymore
It’s far from over in the UK with an average of 32k new covid cases a day and 100 deaths. As others have pointed out there’s lots of places in the world where masks are still mandatory (they should still be in the UK for those who can wear masks to stop coronavirus spread and breakthrough infections, along with reducing risk of further mutations).

Not a deal breaker for me never use that stuff still going ahead with my yearly upgrade 👌

...and nothing of value was lost. FaceID is superior and tying authentication to the Watch when wearing a face mask just sealed the deal.

In some cases and for some people faceID works better than touchID.
In some cases and for some people touchID works better than faceID.

What would be nice is to have the option to use one or the other or BOTH for improved security.

This. I’d like to have TouchID to complement FaceID.

Just put the fingerprint on the back of the phone like Android does, it works really well. I have probably held my phone to face my 1000 times without it waking up, which is why I liked my iPhone 8 so much with the Touch ID.

Touch ID would be nice, but if I don't get the iphone 13, it's not because of the lack of touch id, nor because I don't want the new features on the phone.

Yet another reason to stay away. I don't need my iphone phoning home to check up on my photos and no touch id? No new iphone. face id is ok but just a finger print is better.

I find Touch ID more intuitive when using ApplePay. Instead, with Face ID you're moving your device towards the payment device, then re-aiming at your face to authorize. One motion - device to payment device with finger on the touch point is smoother and way more intuitive to me.
To paraphrase Jobs, you're doing it wrong. Take out your phone, double-click, authenticate it to your face, optionally choose which item from your Wallet that you're using*, and then reach the phone out to the tap target.

*Mostly I want my default credit card, but every weekday I use a ChargePoint station and so I select their "card" in the Wallet, which activates the station via NFC.

I'm getting tired of waiting for Apple to catch up with the competition. My biggest bug bear right now is wearing face masks and not being able to authenticate Apple Pay in stores. I've never found FaceID to be more convenient than TouchID... Fix it.
You can still authenticate Apple Pay with your passcode 🙄

It’s such a disappointment for me as I am looking into buying iPhone 13 or possibly 12s if this is the case. For Apple Watch owners, they shouldn’t find it inconvenient but for a person like me who doesn’t own one, it is really troublesome to unlock by shifting my mask every time I wanna unlock. if under display authentication is not mature enough yet, how come they won’t release a model with the kind of Touch ID equipped with recent iPads? I hope Apple will bring some surprises.

FaceID is the single thing I hate most about my 12 mini after the upgrade from a 7. The second thing is the missing USB C.

kind of ridiculous, even my cheap Samsung Galaxy A52 from work has a under the screen fingerprint scanner and it is working flawless. I love how you just touch the screen and your finger almost lights up with an animation popping up on the screen. It almost feels like magic.

I guess that is the disadvantage of having the perfect cash cow in the case of Apple, why bother with anything but camera improvements and a faster chip that you won't really take advantage of, if people (I am not an exception!) just buy it anyway.
Factssssssss

I don't mind it.
On my old iPhones with Touch ID I always had to clean the sensor and wipe my fingers dry until it registered my fingerprint, it gets so annoying when you are sweating much.

I like Face ID so much better!
During this pandemic it is an obligation to often clean your hands and phone.

I'm sure there are a lot of factors to consider, but "you can use your Apple Watch to unlock your iPhone" is hardly sufficient to cover FaceID's limitations with masks given that only about 1 in 10 iPhone users has an Apple Watch. I'd think that "COVID is a passing phenomenon" would be a more likely argument.

I reckon Apple were not satisfied with the under screen touch ID performance on their prototypes. It probably performed similar or maybe slightly better then the under screen sensors on current Android flagships, and from my experience with them, they can be finnicky and not work 100% of the time, and so for Apple this is not good enough.

Power button touch id is the answer, and Apple already have the tech from the Air 4 (I have it and it works beautifully).

Don't worry people, Touch ID is not dead we will get it in some form on future lower end iphones, so all hope is not lost. I greatly appreciate Face ID and the extra functionality it has, but I just overall prefer Touch ID.
