I like Touch ID because that means I can watch what I want without anyone ever finding out.

All hidden behind my fingerprints.

I'd say it works about half of the time.

Set it up for both of my thumbs and every time I press the home button it seems to unlock my phone about half the time. It's literally 50/50 'try again' and successful unlocking.

I've tried re-doing the setup for it about 10 times now, doing exactly what it says on the screen and I just can't make it work properly.

My hands are not greasy, my 5s is perfectly clean and still it doesn't really 'just work' the way you'd expect it to. You seem to have to do it at the right angle every time if you want it to actually work properly, align your finger 20* to the left or right and it'll just say 'try again'.

you should set up the same fingerprint multiple times under Touch ID settings. I have my thumb "saved" as a fingerprint three times and it works 99% of the time.

You shouldn't have to do that. It ought to "just work". But that a good workaround for now.

I'm giving up. It's either all of a sudden all my fingers have become ineligible for touch ID usage or the sensor is broke. Nothing works. I even tried registering all five slots with my right thumb just so it would at least provide a satisfactory recognition rate with that single finger. No chance. After some time it just plainly rejects my thumb. End of story.

I'm going to consult the genius bar. It's simply ridiculous.

This is the one feature that I miss (actually the only feature I missed) from the 5S when I traded it for a Note 3. Apple was correct about people not setting up security on devices because I leave my Note 3 unprotected. I would say touch id worked over 90% of the time and it was quick.

Just one last thing to try before you give up. First, delete all of your scans.

I went thru a period of multiple rescans and low % success. Tried cleaning etc, but without success.

It has been WAY better since I changed the way I use the home button. I used to use my thumb at about a 45 degree angle to push the home button. Not exactly the tip, but not the "flat" part either. So I set my scans up for this and had about a 25-30% success rate on first scan. Pretty frustrating. Also tried multiple scans without success.

I erased these scans and rescanned with the more flat part of my thumb. More or less like being fingerprinted. (before you ask, it was for a job interview . . .)

Now I have been having great results for a several weeks. Realistically, I don't expect a phone scanner to be 100% anyway, but just good enough to avoid being frustrated. I have to say, when it works this fingerprint scanner is a nice feature.

One last suggestion. Once you have the scan set up like this, you might have more consistent results waking from the sleep button and then scanning, rather than using the home button for both. I think this has less movement potential than using the home button and scanning. ( But as long as I don't move my finger too much, using the home button is now working near 100%)

I've found that the position I frequently have my thumb in doesn't catch enough of the steel ring, which seems to cause a good portion of the errors I get. Otherwise, the errors I get happen when my fingers are really cold or sweaty.

Use touch Id the same way as when you set it up

Its a bit flaky if I try to use it one handed
I didn't set the print one handed so that's why.

TouchID doesn't work for me

I have been quite meticulous in confirming correct setup, but it works about 25% of the time for me. Seriously, a 75% failure. I would consider it non-functioning. I am actually very surprised to see all of the comments about it working so well.

Did you update to 7.1? It works 99% for me now. Also try to rescan finger holding it in different positions.

I never had an issue with touch before or after the upgrade. I thought it would be a gimmick but it has proved useful.

Since upgrading to iOS 7.1, Touch ID has worked almost 100% of the time for me (the only unsuccessful read was my fault).

I think the "fade" issue has to do with Touch ID constantly updating and refining the scans whenever it reads your prints. If you have several unsuccessful attempts in a row and have to enter a passcode, Touch ID will integrate that data into the original print scans. Problem is if you had cold, wet, or dirty hands, those faulty reads now become part of what Touch ID looks for. I read that Touch ID also allows for you to retrain the prints by going into the Settings and using the finger identification screen.

Aside from a few cases of Touch ID no longer working altogether, the iOS 7.1 update seems to have greatly improved the reliability for most users. Remains to be seen if the "fade" issue persists.

While I didn't have any real issues with Touch ID before, the reliability of the first acan seems to be improved.

Get your iphone switched man

Heres what I did. Works a treat, you want your thumb to change temperature and structure so

Step 1 - scan right thumb
step 2 - hold a cup of hot tea or coffee until thumb is hot
step 3 - Scan thumb again (same thumb as step 1)
step 4 - take a bath
step 5 - dry hand
step 6 - scan wrinkly thumb (same one as step 1)

repeat for other thumb though you only have two scans left. you choose what works best.

ps... if you use more than one digit to unlock you'll have to work it out :)

It was like 85-90% before .... It's like 95% now.
To be honest it still have to fail once since iOS 7.1 upgrade
