Could be a Samsung vs LG display issue. Apple is sourcing them from both I think. Then it is just a lottery.

Apple replied to my bug report where I mentioned I was having random touch issues such as buttons not responding and the keyboard not properly responding to touch. Apple stated that iOS 18.1 beta 7 has a potential fix for touch issues. I am no longer on beta so can someone please test if they are on beta 7? Apple is asking if this resolved it.

I’m also having this touch issue where the edges of the device do not respond to taps. This means tapping the outer half of backspace or shift do not respond at all. Can someone test if this is fixed on beta 7?

And don’t forget to use the Apple feedback app/website to report these issues! Apple does reach out on occasion to get more info so that they can work with you to fix issues.

Previously in this thread:

Just an update, iOS 18.1 Beta 7 seems to have mostly fixed the issue.

I still miss some light taps here and there but the slow swiping/scrolling now seems to be working most of the time. Definitely less typos as well. Still not perfect but way better than before.

Can anyone else with this problem download the latest beta and confirm this fix?

Edit: Spoke too soon, slow swiping/scrolling still an issue

Okay, today I am heading to Apple Store to get a new 16 Pro Max. I will inspect it in the store and if it is better than my current phone, I will keep it.

I will inspect:
  • Touch responsiveness
  • Camera sensor (blue noise issue)
  • Camera sensor (strange ring artifact on the center of images taken with 1x)
  • Uniformity of the display
  • Manufacture date
If I find any issue on the new one I will attempt an immediate replacement in the store. If they are out of stock I will get my money back and come back another day for the same procedure.

Of course I will keep you posted on my findings.

Hopefully the new iPhone you get is issue free, I'm waiting for your post before I take the plunge and get another Pro Max.

Here we go...

I'm assuming it's good so far ?

Camera is fine and without iCloud backup it feels as snappy as my old 15 Pro Max. Huge improvement. Right now restoring iCloud to see if that changes anything.

Such a relief to type on this phone. Super snappy.

That's good to hear. Are you getting the same colour as your first iPhone 16 Pro Max ?

Good to hear, but I doubt hardware issues, many people were facing issues in 18, mentioned reductions after 18.01, so let’s see how things go with 18.1

No. This one is black. So beautiful. My old is white.

I will keep the white one for some additional comparisons before trying to get it exchanged. It surely has a hardware problem because even with iCloud restored the new phone is very snappy. So happy. Night and day difference when typing.

So this is most likely a hardware issue.

New 16PM is manufactured in September and old August.

How do you know when it's manufactured? I'm going to pick mine up and I'm gonna do the same thing you did as well

Settings > Battery > Health

I don't know any other method.

After spending some more time with the phone it is absolutely night and day difference. This one is just like my 15 Pro Max. 10/10 snappiness. The previous 16PM is a 7/10. I can hit the backspace key quickly without any delay at all. Instant.

Wait to hear this one. I called Apple Support and told him that I have a delay response to my touch screen on my iPhone 16 PM. The Support Specialist named George, acknowledges that there is an issue and reassures me it is a software and not a hardware problem. Then he says to me when you have chosen to be on a Beta software, you run the risk of glitches, and so I have two choices now, I either wait to the software catches up with the version I have now or down grade it to the current version. That's answer I was given, I await for your responses.

So you using it with the tempered glass?

Is there a screen protector that does not have a sharp edge ?

With the thinner bezels, I am hearing people are not happy with their screen protectors digging into their fingers everytime they swipe from the edge...

Not really the right thread for that question. But the protectors with rounded corners (often with black borders) don't have that issue. But the borders on the protector sometimes cover real pixels on the display and makes it look like a 15 Pro Max.

Same belkin screen protector as my other laggy 16PM.
yeah seeing the posts about touch problems and looking at the screen quality at the store for myself where only one out of 8 on the expose was ok and all others had a huge blue tint when tilted, I really think I will give up on Apple this year. I wanted to buy it from my provider so I think exchanging involves sending back and possibly a lot of arguing if I change it numerous times. I will give up probably, but it's a bummer bc I love my macbook and jsut wanted to switch into apple ecosystem completly by ditching my samsung phone and garmin watch.

l'm glad and happy for you that you get a good device this time 😀 I think the touch problem is a hardware one but Apple is trying to hide it and cover with some software compromises. Overall I think the whole ordering before the release thing, as I look at it now, is messed up from Apple. It looks like they are jsut using the early adopters as beta testers, so they sell the first batch of devices for the most crazy fans, and just use them to look for possible production fails to upgrade the whole production process before starting the mass scale production. I think it is a very ****** strategy. And if anyone thinks I'm exaggerating, keep in mind for couple of years they were hiding something as huge as keyboroard failure in 3k$ macbook pro devices :D

I have the same problem with the touch screen

I contacted apple support and they installed some profile to take logs but still they find no issue and i went to genius bar at my country and then they detected multi touch screen has issue and they gave me a new replacement and BUILD is july 2024

so far touches has been good and doesnt miss keys anymore but there is still one issue

Anything at the end of the red line cant be touched or sensed

I tried P , Q , SHIFT , ABC/123 TOGGLE

All cant touch but i used assistive touch and toggle the ball over to those edges and it can detect

so i m pretty sure its a software issue instead of hardware

Anyone else encounter this ?

So your replacement is July or the old one was July?

My replacement is July and my old one is August lol

I think it has nothing to do with the Build tho its really high rate of defective devices and software

currently with the latest one still having the issue at the edge part where it doesnt sense the key but if u try scroll on it it works

so its software definitely

On my old 16PM half of the backspace was unresponsive. On the new one the entire button works. I can press repeatedly on the edge and it triggers without delay 100% of the time.
