I bought a new 16 Pro Max today and its manufactured in September. So far it's a night and day difference.

It's so much more responsive than my launch 16 Pro Max. The screen protector I've got on it is the belkin ultra glass 2.

I'm actually very shocked at how fast and responsive it is!

There's definitely a hardware issue with the launch 16 pro max's.

Glad to hear you got a good one too. Yes. It must be hardware. Both phones with same iOS version, screen protector and still the feeling is night and day.

It’s funny you mention this, I bought a launch day DT PM, and it had various touch issues and was unresponsive under certain conditions.

I returned it for a black one which also had the same issues but worse. It had a problem with the NFC chip as well, not to mention the camera control button not opening the camera on a single click, despite being set to do so.

Note that both of these were August builds.

I returned the black one a few days ago due to the issues it had and received another black one, this time manufactured in September, and it’s been absolutely flawless.

It’s responsive, it doesn’t lag, and all the hardware works as it should.

So I agree 100%, the launch phones (in my experience) seem to suffer from glitches a lot more than later ones.

I have the same problem with the touch screen

I contacted apple support and they installed some profile to take logs but still they find no issue and i went to genius bar at my country and then they detected multi touch screen has issue and they gave me a new replacement and BUILD is july 2024

so far touches has been good and doesnt miss keys anymore but there is still one issue

23d4fde8-21ff-4b81-a817-bf7b1c53505a

Anything at the end of the red line cant be touched or sensed

I tried P , Q , SHIFT , ABC/123 TOGGLE

All cant touch but i used assistive touch and toggle the ball over to those edges and it can detect

so i m pretty sure its a software issue instead of hardware

Anyone else encounter this ?
Same issue on 16PM 18.0.1 August.
Messing around with texting, I believe I isolated the issue to the way my thumb is positioned. If I use the middle point of my thumb, these keys are missed. If I use the side edge of my thumb, they’re not missed. This not only happens with keys along the edge, but as well as other things like safari ‘x’ in tabs and other things.
Try it out and is it the same for you?

Edit: also try only using your index finger and see what happens

I can’t help but wonder if, given this is the first generation of the 6.9” screen, there havent been some design/manufacturing issues.

They were making the previous 6.7” screen for years and had it down to a fine art.

Not saying it’s acceptable (it’s not), but just spitballing as to a possible reason behind these issues we’re seeing 🤷‍♂️

a new updare , i am at an apple store in my country i tested all the iphones on display at the store aroud 15 pcs all of then having the same issue with the backspace button half it and P , Q , shift button all same issue , either is design issue or software issue

or all of the july 2024 build have this issue

anyone with sept build can make a video

I don’t think it’s hardware related. Mine has still issues. With 18.0.1 it’s far better than release, but I hate to type on this phone!!!

Exchange it. I also hated to type on my launch day 16PM - even with 18.0.1. But my new 16PM that I bought yesterday is 10/10 snappy.

It is most likely hardware related. It can perhaps be solved with software but I would not take that risk.

I agree, I don't see how this would be hardware related. If it were hardware, you wouldn't see any changes from one iOS version to another. My guess is that with the change in bezel thickness and the panels being sourced from different vendors, they still need some time to iron out the glitches that may be due to palm rejection features not being polished enough. The bezels are now the smallest they've ever been and I imagine they had to tweak the software a bit to account for this, but the phones weren't out during the beta phase of iOS 18 so they couldn't solve these issues sooner.
I don't think I've ever heard of issues like this being hardware related, don't see how it could be, it's highly likely the software that's controling the panels.

I am pretty sure that the only thing 18.0.1 solved was the issue that the screen would completely lock up if you touched the area near the camera control button.

My "defective" 16 Pro Max has lag in the keyboard even if it is flat on a table and I only touch the screen with my index finger. So it is surely not an issue of palm rejection in that case.

I always thought it was a software issue but after my experience with the replacement, which is 100% flawless on exactly the same software version as my laggy 16 Pro Max makes me think that the hardware must be related somehow.

If it is a defect that can be solved with software update or not is unknown. It could be related to different panel manufacturers and that only one of them is properly tuned. If that is the case, then it could be solved.

My current best guess is that it is hardware. I believe the lag is caused by early production issues with the display panel. But again, it is just my guess. In any case, there are 16 Pro (Max) out there with absolutely zero issues and if I had a laggy unit I would replace it until I got a good one.

It’s K, if the hardware is a problem, for exemple, my phone is july, and all people must Change their phone, that have this bulit or issues, for you, Apple change all phone?

I doubt they would do a recall. But people who report the issue will most likely get their phone replaced.

How we perceive lag is very individual. Some people will not even notice because they don't use their phone in a way where it is a problem.

If someone wants to check their touch screen, let them turn off their phone, wait 30 seconds. Then press and hold the vol up and vol down button (2 at the same time) and connect the phone to the charger. When the Apple logo appears, release the buttons. The phone will turn on in self-test mode. Accept the terms of use, connect to your local Wi-Fi network and you can choose the touch screen test. I think that for many people this will clarify the situation whether it is the hardware or software that is faulty.

I've been very surprised at how fast and responsive my new 16 Pro Max is , it's been 10/10.

The camera also seems more better and the pictures more sharper, camera pictures on my launch 16 Pro Max were very washed out.

I've learnt my lesson to never buy any phone at launch, better to wait a month or two.
