While as soon as the widescreen iPod does appear, whether it's this year or next, I will mostly likely sell my 5G video iPod and get the widescreen iteration.

One aspect of the Zune I would like to see implemented in the next iPod is wi-fi capability, as long as apple can manage to keep the battery life respectable. If it ends up taking a hit, then I would say just get rid of it. I would love to have open wi-fi access--not just share a song with someone and have only a few listens before it self-destructs.

If nothing else, the simply widescreen option will make me upgrade.

Actually all the new content is 640 x 480 which is a 4:3 ratio not widscreen. Hmmm

not necessarily. i think the MAXIMUM is 640 x 480 which would be reduced to something like 640 x 360 or something like that in movies.

All the stuff steve showed was in 4:3. That doesn't mean we'll not see a video iPod it's just something worth noting. The new iPod could use a 640 x 480 display maybe - quite a number of new PDA's use a 3.5" 640 x 480 display, maybe they'll use somehting like that.

As a video professional, I can tell you for a fact that resolution is only one part of the final aspect ratio. A DVD's actual resolution is 720x480, but because a TV's pixles are not square (they have an aspect ratio of 8:9, i.e. a bit taller than they are wide,) the result is an image that is 4:3. (Thus, 640x480 with square pixels is only "near DVD quality")

Animorphic video takes non-square pixels the opposite direction. Thats why Pirates of the Caribbean looks to be widescreen on iTMS... It's pixels are stretched a bit wider than they are tall.

Put simply, "pixel aspect ratio" impacts the final aspect as much as resolution does.

Fun fact: what is the "pixel aspect ratio" of 16:9 video from a 640x480 source? Give up? It's 4:3. Why? Simple math. 4x3 resolution with 4:3 pixels is 16:9 because 4x4=16 and 3x3=9.

is that possible that apple released so called iPod video as a different product line??'

i mean iPod 5g remain the same...iPod video..with a higher price..better screen??

I think i'll just save up some money and get a new nano. This news gets me really excited but I just don't get why I would want a huge screen video ipod. I don't really travel a lot, and the only use for something like this would be on a plane. Plus it's gonna be atleast $400 (i'm guessing a higher capacity for $600). I got my macbook and if I ever want to watch something i'll just use the 13'3''.

I really hope this rumor is true. Since Apple set up a movie store for the iPod, I would like to see a true video iPod.

I was hoping Apple would release it in time for the holidays and this just makes me feel better. :) Sure it's not an official confirmation, but I can't see Apple letting the holidays pass by without amazing us with a brand new iPod, not counting the nano. It's been almost a year since the 5G iPod was introduced, so it's definitely due for a real upgrade. Of course it wouldn't replace it since not everyone wants a full screen iPod. I would order one right away, though. :D

Come on, Apple. Make my Chrismas awesome!

Though it's not by any means "perfect", but what's wrong with the current model? Why would a widescreen be considered "true" video ipod?
Doesn't playing video make it true?

Just curious.

You mean for song sharing? Don't get your hopes up, they just added iPod-to-iTunes copying, and only that for copies with the same iTS account. Cool as it might be, we will never never see it. Zune's thing is just a gimmick to sell more songs online.

First, I would love to have a Video iPod.

I don't believe we will see them before the holidays. As others have stated, if SJ mentions iTV, then why would he not mention the Video iPod if it was coming so soon?

My guess is that we will see the Video iPod introduced during MWSF 2007. It will be introduced as part of the iTV solution. Yes, I believe that the Video iPod will have WiFi included.

MWSF is usually focused around Macs and the Mac OS, not iPods. It could happen, though.

And some people don't get it... why would Apple give a preview of the true iPod video? This would not be good business for Apple. Why preview a better version of the iPod when consumers could easily purchase the 5G model that is available now? It would dramatically take sales away. That's like introducing the iPod nano last week and then Steve Jobs rolling out a preview of the 3G model with larger capacities and more features. It just doesn't work that way.

No the Widescreen Movies are 640x272 or 352 depending on the Widescreen ratio

Microsoft was slated to price the Zune at 300. the iPod price cut surprised them, and they are reconsidering, so that they will match the iPod price.

I feel this rumor is just to try to get MS to keep their 300 price tag on the Zune ( which would also make it undesirable to more people )

I can't see a widescreen video iPod before 2007, it would just be un-apple like.

I must say I'm dubious about a true video iPod. Not dubious about how it will be released, just dubious about how good it will actually be.

If the click wheel is integral to the screen, ie touchscreen, then we have issues of scratching, finger smudges etc. Whilst a case with a protective cover gets around the smudges, it could cause scratching and will of course become smudged itself.

If the clickwheel is retained separately then presumably the dimensions of the ipod will need to be significantly bigger than the audio versions, as I cant see how a viewable widescreen picture can fit on the current model.

Personally speaking I find really small screens far too small. Anything below PSP size really. For mobile video I use an Archos AV700 device, which with a 7 inch screen is superb. Sure I cant fit it in a pocket, but it goes neatly in a carry bag or briefcase.

For music, I've just ordered the 80gb iPod, as the gapless playback and iTunes makes it irresistable. I jus wish Apple would produce a decent remote control - one which offers full functionality and a three line scrolling LCD display as opposed to the "toy" ones they've doen so far. Then the iPod could sit discretely in a pocket rather than being taken out each time a new playlist is required.

Portalplayer or Samsung?

While the news of Samsung was going to supply the (Arm) chips for the new iPods dates from April 2006, we have not yet seen those chips in today's iPods and I have never seen a new discussion / thread refering to this change of chip providers.

What do you all think? This Samsung ARM chip will be introduced in the new fullscreen Video iPod?

Also, another rumor spoke of SigmaTel to supply chips for the new iPod Shuffles... can anybody confirm the type of chip currently is being used in the new iPod Shuffles? Possibly running some stripped down version of Darwin / Cocoa ?

[edit] the previous iPod Shuffle already used a SigmaTel chip so it's quite obvious the new one probably will use one as well... [/edit]

Wouldn't be my perfect video iPod with that lousy video playback... someone spent quite some time in Photoshopping that and he couldn't even get the video to scale right ? :)

Well they've done a tear down of the big iPod which revealed they are still using PortalPlayer.
I don't know if I'm right but I don't think anyones done a tear down analysis of the Nano yet.
I looked at the article that you have linked to but that article thats Samsung will be in future flash based iPod's.

So they could be in the nano.
