Very nice. I could see that actually working unlike some of the other mockups.

...lt's a cool concept. Would be great to see something along these lines launched in Jan.

I doubt the lid could be that thin, though - with two screens, (one on each side), plus the click wheel mechanism in there I guess they'd have to make it a lil' thicker than that...

Add to that, when you include more movable parts to the device, the more likely it will break, and it seems something like that would break fairly easily. The mock-up is very cool though, and sans a touch interface, seems an interesting idea for the interim.

lets hope apple can get this quality unit out soon.

i do understand not releasing a buggy version. if they did that, it would tarnish brand image. and that would not be worth it as they already make out very well

:)

Thanks for that!!!

It's the funniest post I've read all week!

When I saw this, I figured that it is plausible that the video could still be imminent, as the 5th Gen ipods are just a small performance bump, and almost all the features found in them come with the 1.2 update for the previous 5th gens (giving 5th gen owners very little reason to consider an upgrade)

That being said, if they were coming out with it, it probably would have been announced at the conference. If they had x amount of time and attention to show new products, the imminent video iPod would have been given spotlight over iTV, which pretty much was the spotlight for the media event. New Nano is cool, and going to sell well, but its not an "exciting NEW product"

For a while I was wondering why the new iPod is Macbook sized :p

I think Apple is playing this out perfectly....
First they trump M$ on price with the new lower-priced iPod ... and then when M$ is all set to formally introduce the Zune, Apple blows 'em away with the new piece. Game .... Set .... Match!

Except we don't know what the price of the Zune will be at this point. All we have is an article that claims MS was taken aback by the pricing of the iPods. For all we know the Zune could come out at $199 and make a killing.

And we can almost be certain that a new widescreen iPod isn't going to be all that cheap when first available.

Apple has already clearly demonstrated that this market is not all about price - look how people have stayed away from the low-price competitors. And think about it ... why would M$'s first product be HD-based and not flash? For M$ to be a serious competitor they must have an obviously superior product (the box and the store). Don't get me wrong ... there is more Apple could do --- but with the first few shots fired they're playing a very smart game.

I would guess MS went with the HDD format so that people can store larger amounts of content at a cheaper price. Flash is expensive. The 8GB nano and the 30GB iPod certainly demonstrate that.

And people generally lean towards products with high market saturation and generous advertising, both of which apple has. I could be wrong, but I don't think that has everything to do with the quality of the product.

I think it's going to be difficult for anyone at this point to grab that market from apple, though it will happen eventually. I'm personally very happy that another big boy is making an entry into this market. If the Zune ends up successfully competing with the iPod, then that might push apple to a greater degree of competitiveness, pushing out more interesting and innovative products as opposed to a simple storage bump on their iPod. At this point, that's not innovative or interesting at all, IMO.

I'll say this though, if the Zune comes out at a decent price and proves itself to be a competitive product, I will certainly consider it as a purchase. Though it sometimes bites me in the end, I like to go for the superior product rather than be a brand loyalist.

That being said, Apple generally makes great products, and the respect they have built among consumers has definitely been earned.

If this is true, I am glad I only bought the 2gb new nano. I still have $600 in my emergency apple fund (true purpose for that account sadly) for a new Video or 6g ipod!

I am also hoping that pressure from the Microsoft Zune will press Apple to have a fair price, and offer lots of new features in the next iPod device :)

I'm almost certain that Microsoft just announced the Zune would be $299.

They just announced this a couple days ago,t here was a thread about it.

That's probably correct, but it's still a report. MS hasn't yet officially announced the price themselves yet. Am I wrong?
The $299 pricing has been very widely circulated, but I guess we'll only really find out when they hit the streets on Nov. 14. Maybe MS's secret plan ins to offer a competitive upgrade pricing with a mail in rebate of $50 for every iPod turned in. :p

Engadget has a grab from a Wal-Mart online catalogue listing it at $284.

Good enough for me. $299 it is. (compusa had the larger 5G iPods for ~$280 recently too). Still doesn't mean they don't have coupon in the box. 'twould be typical of Microsoft. :p

It does seem likely that Apple would release a true vide iPod before Christmas. Did anyone notice that the updated models were kind of brushed over at the last keynote? Steve normally makes a big deal but it just made me think that there is more to come. Also if anyone remembers when the iPod Photo was released, they lowered the price point of the black and white and made room for the photo at the top end.

I made a very similar post a little while back, to me the last iPod release seemed to be nothing a non event considering the fact the Nano got a massive overhaul.

The iPod Nano and Shuffle seem to be very similar stylewise and the new iPod just seems a little out of place like "last year's model".

I personally think we will see a new iPod before the release of the Zune, Apple has something up it's sleave to blow the Zune out of the water and to support the new iTunes movie store.

I will be seriously pissed if Apple comes out with another Ipod. Ever since the first rumor of an iPod touch screen I held off on buying an iPod video because I knew that I would be happier waiting. I mean hey...Apple updated their computer line 9 million times in the past year so I figured the iPod would definately come out. So after the recent updates I just broke and bought and Ipod Video 30gig. If a new one comes out before christmas i am going to flip the **** on apple.

What is a true video iPod?

What is going on here? Sure apple may be working on something advanced but are you trying to say that if a new iPod that can play video comes out my current video iPod is going to start getting called a fake video iPod? Do you really think Steve Jobs decided to just "try" the current iPod video to see if it would sell and just happen to get involved with disney randomly?

Well he didnt. And the video iPod is already released.

Maybe a thread titled "who can do the best mock up of a 6th gen iPod, or what features/capabilities it should have, or when it will be released" - But i'm sure there are hundreds of those threads already. No-one really predicted the new shuffle/nano line up, and now that new nano's are out, shall we call them the true nano, and the old ones fake nano's?
