This better be some helluva camera if they're taking so long to make the iPhone X.

Kuo said shipments of iPhone X components will likely ramp up in mid to late October.
No, that's not an adequate timing. It would mean two months more of iOS noise. That's too much. Please put an ACME 3D scanner in those phones and ship them tomorrow, so that be can focus in serious Mac stuff.

Something must have happened where they decided later than normal that they wanted to do Face ID over Touch ID. The fact that the couldn't get Touch ID underneath the screen forced them to use their backup technology that they may have been planning for future iPhones, but not for the X

According to Gruber, according to anyone he could talk to at Apple, that wasn't true. They may have been at some point trying to get TouchID under the screen, but the decision to use FaceID wasn't a "late" one by any means. Obviously though, anything that's causing trouble will be seen as a decision made "too late".

Here's to waking up at 2:59 AM and using the App Store app with Touch ID- should be able to get the order in as soon as humanly possible :d

Damn.... the analyst said "1H18F" too. I don't know if Apple's fiscal year follows the calendar but he's saying possibly not until the end of June to get up to speed fully !

My sentiments exactly, with one minor correction. I'll be waking up at 2:45 a.m., just to make sure that everything is ready to go on a moment's notice!

Following a report claiming Apple's suppliers are shipping only about 40 percent of the components originally planned for initial production of the iPhone X, a new report suggests the TrueDepth camera is the primary bottleneck.

The word comes from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said the facial recognition system is "far more complex" than those on competing devices, which is making it challenging for Apple to achieve mass production.

An excerpt from Kuo's research note obtained by MacRumors:Kuo said shipments of iPhone X components will likely ramp up in mid to late October. Given pre-orders begin October 27, with in-store availability starting November 3, all signs point towards the iPhone X being in extremely short supply.

Kuo believes iPhone X pre-orders have the potential to exceed 40-50 million units, so it's clear the device won't achieve supply-chain balance for quite awhile.

doesn't apple have like $200 billion in the bank? like jesus christ buy some factories, companies, or whatever to get production what it needs to be smh
You can't be serious. You do realize that even if Apple "bought some factories" today, it would be 6, 12 months or longer before they'd likely be producing ?

Why do we always take this guys word as gospel? All he does is come out with 50/50 guesses and takes credit for the ones that are right.

The complexity of the part worries me.

As a matter of fact, everything about this launch worries me :D

According to Federighi, FaceID only has been the chosen route for over a year. If it's more secure and faster like they say, you can understand why they canned off TouchID. This does not explain the front sensor lead-time issue though.

Apple's fiscal year runs from October 1 - September 30, which would mean that the full production ramp-up will be achieved by late March.

1. (If) The front depth sensor is indeed the bottleneck
2. (If) Many customers care about the OLED display instead of the Face ID and Animoji

The team could have given us:

7s
New Design, 1080p display, Back Touch ID

7s Plus
New Design, 1080p OLED Display, Back Touch ID
64/256GB storage

iPhone Edition
A bit larger 7s with both Touch ID and Face ID
Better Facetime Camera
128/512GB Storage

Now the widely available model has a 4yr old design w/o the OLED display that many want and the iPhone X may not be easy to grab due to Animoji.

40-50 million of PreOrders would honestly be just insane. We're talking 40-50 Billions of sales....

It'll be a hell of fun this year to watch the launch day crazyness, scalpers, etc.

That is like saying "hey, why Samsung can't just go out and buy someone who can make a phone better than the iPhone?"

At the moment they are probably the only ones on earth who have the know-how to manufacture the thing. They are probably literally learning how the thing can be made, there's no manual for this type of stuff. They can't just hire an expert, they are the experts.

Increasing production capacity should be very easy for Apple to do.

So get this, the design model that should of been the choice for ALL the iPhones this year is delayed due to a "feature" literally no one wanted or asked for.
LOL
Seem to remember lots of desire for smaller bezels, therefore no home button ID. Calls for OLED screens. But don’t want to give up convenient security.

Wrong forum for logic.
