Trump will hire foreign workers to staff Mar-a-Lago this winter
Donald Trump requested 64 foreign guest workers for his “winter White House”
In speeches and tweets, President Donald Trump insists it's time to put "America first," but when it comes to his family's vast empire of successful businesses, foreign workers apparently make attractive hires.

Trump Vineyard Estates, owned by Eric Trump, is seeking permission to hire 29 foreign workers through the federal H-2A visa program to cultivate grapes at its Virginia winery, the Associated Press reported Tuesday. The immigration program lets agricultural employees temporarily hire foreign workers to do the jobs Americans don't want or can't do.

Eric Trump applied for six foreign workers in December, just before his father moved into the White House and described his "America first" vision in his Inauguration Day speech. Now, Trump Vineyard Estates is seeking permission to hire 23 more foreign workers at $10.72 an hour.

I work for a large tech company that hires many H1B worker visas. There is massive abuse and lies that the foreign workers are uniquely qualified and there isn't an American who can do the job.

Visa workers in turn drive down everyone's salaries because there are suddenly more applicants who can be considered for a job.

I'm not a Trump fan but I welcome these changes as my employer is pushing to receive even more H1B visas. Its getting out of hand.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. "Creating" jobs for our citizens is a positive thing... but restricting foreign workers from working in the US is not. There are far better ways to create jobs. Almost every industry you can think of has benefitted from foreign workers. From agriculture to Silicon Valley.

Not to mention that this just may force companies to increase outsourcing more work which this would not affect.

The problem is the system is completely abused. I have a close friend in from India on one of these. You are at the mercy of your employer - your work and HOME life - and get paid pennies what you should. Companies like Apple, Facebook, etc would not have as much profit without abusing this program.

The disgraceful fact of the matter is that it took Donald Trump to clamp down on the H1-B.

Where the **** was Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Tom Perez, Nancy Pelosi, or Chuck Schumer when they could've done something about it? Too busy trying to fast track TPP, that's where.

Psst... The people you listed don't care about the America you grew up in as much as you think they do. They care about the America they have imagined in their minds, which is not America at all.

First of all, can you please spare us that font?
Second, at each and every rally Trump said that the problem is excessive use of foreign workers, especially if illegal, not the use itself. He always said tha hard, honest workers are welcome as long as the system is not exploited.

Anyone know what exactly changed? I look around and all I see are mentions of memos stating we need to "toughen up" on this subject.

Thanks Steve.

I'm definitely NOT a follower of Trump. But, this action is long overdue. I work for a major IT co. in VA. Most of my co-workers are from India and benefitted from the H1-B program. When we have openings, my boss (also from India) ONLY interviews those on H1-B. They don't even give Americans a chance at jobs. It's not a matter of not having U.S. talent to hire. It's more like "Americans need not apply."

Isn't this thread about high tech jobs and H-1B visas.

Then you complain about maids and cooks while providing link to the H-2A program which is for seasonal agricultural workers.

All over the place. You almost have that square peg in the round hole... keep on pounding.

So far, I strongly oppose 18,492 things Trump has done and approve of 2:

  • Killing the TPP
  • Cracking down on H1B visa abuse (that drives down salaries for US skilled labor)

I find it annoying how many so-called centrists think these were just fine.

Very Bad for the Tech Industry. Most of the Best Talent is overseas, They are way more hungry than these lazy american millennials that just want high pay for just showing up.

You can look at hollywood, most of the actors are British and Australian, Most American Actors don't want to put in any work

I'm sure somebody else already commented, but this is easily one of the most ridiculous comments I've seen on this forum.

That's the mindset of US business types frustrated they still have to pay decent wages to developers and other skilled workers. Their fantasy, short of automation, is to offshore every decent paying, non-executive job to third world countries.

Maybe we should start outsourcing executive jobs. I'm sure we can find plenty of qualified candidates in India with PhDs in business who could run US companies for a tiny fraction of what American execs make.

Companies should be able to hire anyone they want based on THEIR criteria for the positions they are trying to fill. They know what they need to make their company better, not the government. Especially this one that changes the rules whenever they want like claiming only American steel can be used for American construction projects. Let all owner's run their companies by their rules.

If they want to hire cheap foreign labor, let them move their families and businesses to those countries offering cheap labor. But while they're sponging off American infrastructure and other resources, they will play by OUR rules, and that includes barriers to killing American jobs.

Oh great. As if the cost of living in Silicon Valley isn't suffocating enough. Let's pay tech workers even more money. And let's also continue to have those tech workers be completely oblivious to the many people in the area that don't work in tech, make nowhere near there supposed low salary, and don't have any of the freebie perks shoveled out in the tech industry. You're under paid but literally get a free lunch (and every other meal) everyday. Boo hoo.

Don't believe every rant on the net. In many tech fields, if you have an MS degree and you're good at what you do, the pay is quite high.

For those who think US born engineers would be better off if the US didn't bring in any foreign workers. If an engineer doesn't have the skill set to compete against the foreign engineer now, do you think he/she would fare any better if that same foreign engineer was forced to leave and start working at even lower salaries?
Here is what I will tell you from my experience how the competition is completely unfair.

Let's say I am born here and hold a master degree and I am good at doing what I am supposed to. And since I live in America and I want to live my life independently where I can have my own apartment, may be a girlfriend etc., I would need 100k. Because that's the minimum salary I need to afford a rental and plus some living.

But an H1b worker will easily replace me for 60k, why? Because he does not have a family yet, he does not live as per American living standard. He can share an apartment with 6 other H1b workers and in turn pushes the rental prices.

Now tell me, how is it a fair competition? Should we bring down our living standard too so that we can compete with such scenario and where does it end?

For complete disclosure, I came on H1b visa 20 years back and since then I have seen systematic abuse of of the H1b process getting worse and worse.

Precisely. Furthermore, no one is advocating a full halt on immigrant workers, but we have to find a way to stop abuse of the system and marketplace cost manipulation.

Funny, I thought all GOPers were for Government staying out of private businesses. And were for "free market solutions" to issues????

We are also for national security and America first, at least I would like to think so.I think most GOP now is big government establishment types.

Degree affordability is also a factor. University is a whole lot cheaper in Asia. University fees generally doesn't come into play. Whereas in America it does. I have two friends who dropped out of engineering programs because they just couldn't afford it and didn't want to wind up in a bunch of debt.
As I heard from my roommates, take an example: in China mainland, their university bachelor degree cost is around ¥20,000 in average in most cases. Just imagine you could have your bachelor degree after four years of learning and it costs you just $20,000. This is a bargain.
In comparison, in Australia, a bachelor degree provided by University of Sydney could cost a total of $36,000 in a four year period. That is even with the support of Commonwealth.
So, yes you are right: they just can't afford it anyway so they drop their program.

American parents are the reason why children don't want to get into STEM programs. Not foreigners. Asian parents push their children towards the sciences and medicines. It is instilled from a young age that getting a job in STEM areas guarantees a decent income and living.

American parents generally do not instill such things in their children. Majority of children don't even go to the college. Asian countries have higher undergraduate and graduate graduation rates then we do.

Low pay isn't the main reason why tech companies higher forgein workers. It's easier to find qualified applicants overseas . Tech companies started looking abroad for talent because the talent is dry here.

And American parents not focusing on Stem all the time is good for the country. Going back in the history, America was always appreciated as a country where various talents can flourish and make a good living out of it. Asian countries including India had a life style where only kids with stem knowledge could succeed and hence parents would push for that. And we all wanted to migrate to America because we knew we could make a better livin here.

But with the high influx of H1b workers, America is slowly turning into India or any other Asian country which is not good at all. Plus the huge cultural shift towards Asian/Indian culture is also not good. Why come to another beautiful country and turn into same as yours. That's the attribute of invasive or parasitic species!

But they could be paid less at the cost of citizen's jobs.
[doublepost=1491312951][/doublepost]

Corporations use foreign workers to disenfranchise U.S. citizens to pad the bottom line. It's as simple as that.

The salary is never the biggest benefit to the companies who bring in foreign workers, the companies do need to spend a lot of extra money on these foreign workers -- the visa application, relocation and green card application, etc. The biggest benefit the companies enjoy from the foreign workers were their willingness to hard work, voluntarily.
