Right because history has always looked favorably on the times when race and social categories were prioritized over a person's qualities... Same shoe, different foot now. Personally, I'll be glad when future generations are asking wtf we were thinking in the late 2010s/2020s with such insane terminology as "pregnant men", "chest feeders", "menstruating person", or how expert engineers weren't hired to build planes because the manufacturers wanted more gIrL pOwEr on the factory floor or whatever, I'll be able to confidently tell them that I never went along with such obvious stupidity.
Don't forget birthing person, bonus hole... or the brand new inseminated person! Talk about misogyny...

Regardless of DEI, I do think Tim needs to clean house. Besides their chip design department, Apple appears to be a little too lethargic—negligibly different or fragmented hardware updates, public embarrassments in software—as of late.

Sometimes a candidate is chosen because they bring "diversity" to the company...they aren't saying it brings a different skin color what they mean is a more diverse outlook and can bring different ideas to the table..

Love this simple, yet clear explanation. When I try to explain it's in more long winded terms, so borrowing this one.

It'd be amazing if people critical of DEI actually took the time to understand, in good faith, what it is and is trying to accomplish.
I understand it. Almost didn't have my current job because of it. Not enough girls in the department and HR demanded there be.

Stop calling it DEI, spell (and say) the words out loud and follow up with which part you hate the most.

For example, "I hate diversity," "I hate Equality," "I hate Inclusion;" or have the balls to say you hate them all.
Ok, before you get on your high horse, learn what DEI stands for. And if you still need someone to say it, "I hate forced diversity," "I hate Equity," "I hate forced Inclusion". Feel better now? Equity is not equality.

Careful. Those are words of a racist around these parts. /s

Tim Cook doesn't care about what is morally right or wrong. He only cares about maximizing profits. Therefore, he will embrace left-wing identity politics whenever it leads to more money, and right-wing fascism whenever it leads to more money.

And no one is going to gaslight me into thinking this post was some sort of order. An opinion, public urging or recommendation does not carry the weight of an official order that a company (Apple in this case) do something.

I have no problem with people criticizing Trump's, or any other president's, opinions on things but don't label them as orders when they are only opinions, recommendations, etc. For those who don't like Trump and/or his policies, there should be plenty of things to take issue with (the guy is running a mile a minute right now) but don't waste time and energy arguing that a social media post was actually an order. As I said, presidents and other elected officials have been expressing opinions and recommendations about activities in the private sector for ages and will continue to do so.

you are repeating yourself. got the point the first time, it was a rather naive over simplification of actual events. but just because it's a common gas lighting technique doesn't mean thats how you are using it.

Orders? I only used the word in relation to the DEI executive order (literally what it's called) that trump signed, not in relation to social media. Or was that fake news? it gets confusing sometimes what is real or not about what trump says or does.

I understand that people don't want to say they support a felon, whose business sense can be summed up in 'bankrupt 6 times (or is it 7)', a person convicted of malice, these are not opinions they are just facts. But to suggest Trump doesn't use intimidation and bullying in social media is.... simplistic.

Anyway, I don't condone what happened with Siri, but I do think Karma is a b*tch. That was and is my point.

Look, if we don't start asking questions, this is going to continue. What questions should we be asking?

  1. When we say we value tolerance, what do we mean by "Tolerance"? "Inclusion"? "Diversity"?
  2. Do we think it's right to ask employees to violate their conscience?
  3. Does everyone have the right to live their "authentic" selves? Because, if I am not allowed to live my authentic self as a Christian, then you are discriminating.
  4. Do we all have to have the same political, religious or moral beliefs to work here? If not, then why are we pressing people to take firm positions on controversial political and moral issues that have little to do with workplace productivity?

It's going to get worse. They cannot debate these issues because they are contradictory. As soon as they say your beliefs are not included then you can ask "Why not include what I believe? How can you say that you promote tolerance and inclusion and turn around and exclude what I believe?"

This DEI stuff is a joke.

Executive orders do not apply to private companies, or the general public, only to federal government workers. Trump, or any president, cannot dictate rules for companies. That is for Congress and the senate through laws that are passed. Apple can tell Trump to pound sand and there is nothing that Trump can legally do if Apple choses to ignore Trump.

Trump could refuse a tariff exception. But then Apple could cite those as market changes when rescinding their $500B commitment to invest in the US.

I don't really care what Trump thinks, all he has in his wake are bankrupted businesses, and Apple is frequently the most valuable company on the planet. Old man needs to stay in his lane. There are many lessons to learn from Apple, but Trump has none to offer.

So we’re just ignoring that:
  • Stalin’s Soviet Union
  • Mao Zedong’s China
  • North Korea
  • Khmer Rouge in Cambodia
  • Fascist Italy
  • Nazi Germany
…you know, didn’t end up on the right side of history?

It is, by definition, an assessment that can only be made in retrospect.

It’s not, “the right side of the present” for a reason.

They were definitely on the wrong side of history.

It's implied that movements and leaders that make the argument of being on the right side of history are usually wrong.

Dear USA.

I know that Biden/Harris were awful. But Trump/Musk are a lot more. Do something.

Greetings from the EU

Dear EU,

This is the universe working itself out. Play stupid games win stupid prizes. Democratic party refuses to put in candidates that can win. Found this out in 2016 and now again in 2024. Kamala Harris did poorly in 2020 primary and she was only picked for VP because of optics which can work when paired with Joe Biden. But Joe Biden decided to pull out last min due to being incapable of doing the job because of ago so they went with the VP who did poorly in the 2020 primarys and anyone who questioned this was considered a bad person(im sure this post will be down-voted proving my point). Well here we are she got destroyed as any logical person saw with democrats not showing up to vote for her by silent protest. Instead of blaming Trump maybe people will smarten up and put in candidates that will actually win. If you burn yourself enough times on the stove you smarten up.

Stop calling it DEI, spell (and say) the words out loud and follow up with which part you hate the most.

For example, "I hate diversity," "I hate Equality," "I hate Inclusion;" or have the balls to say you hate them all.

You can name it anything you want to make it sound benign. It's societal cancer.

It's just a fancy phrase for racial discrimination. If there's only 3 spots and you "include" three people, you are excluding the fourth.

There are a lot of legal and legitimate reasons to exclude that fourth person. Color of their skin? Absolutely not okay.

And this is was already happening, people with DEI mindsets become entrenched in positions of authority and then surround themselves with likeminded people.

Anyone who bought that line is part of the reason we’re in this mess. It’s never been about principles. It’s always been about control.
Yeah. The Republican Party has abandoned the values that I used to support them for (even if they never embodied them in practice).

Integrity
Family values
Fiscal responsibility
Civil rights
Foreign policy
Christian morality

In an all-caps post on Truth Social today, U.S. President Donald Trump said Apple should fully end its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies.

cook-trump.jpg

"APPLE SHOULD GET RID OF DEI RULES, NOT JUST MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO THEM," he wrote.

Trump's post comes one day after Apple held its annual shareholders meeting, during which a majority of shareholders voted against a proposal that asked the company to consider abolishing its Inclusion & Diversity policies and goals.

The proposal was submitted by the U.S. National Center for Public Policy Research, which calls itself a "non-partisan, free-market, independent conservative think tank." The organization said that DEI programs pose "litigation, reputational, and financial risks to companies, and therefore financial risks to their shareholders."

Apple recommended that shareholders vote against the proposal, labeling it as an attempt to "micromanage" the company's business operations. Apple said that it already actively monitors its operations to maintain compliance with applicable non‑discrimination laws. During the shareholder meeting, Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledged that the company may be forced to make changes to its DEI policies in the future, as required by law. Trump believes that Apple should get rid of the policies, rather than modify them.

In any case, Cook told shareholders that Apple will always have a culture of belonging.

"We strive to create a culture of belonging where everyone can do their best work," said Apple, in its annual shareholders meeting notice.

Trump has criticized DEI programs since returning to the White House. Last month, he signed an executive order that "terminates 'diversity, equity, and inclusion' (DEI) discrimination in the federal workforce." In response, some other tech companies like Google have scaled back DEI policies in recent weeks.

I don't trust people that say they are all about freedom, but then get mad if you don't do what they tell you to do.
