Well... actually... having a laptop with you is basically for the 2 hours you will be waiting before boarding the plane. One on the plane... go to sleep (if you can) because there is no room for anything. You can work on your laptop until you get a Coke served. I mean... the experience is embarrassing.

If I arrive at the gate more than 5 minutes before the plane boards then I am way to early. No need to be there two hours early.

Seattle-Tacoma has required iPads out for at least a year based on personal experience.

TSA Pre√ and Global Entry have paid for themselves in time savings so many times over.

I just enrolled in Global Entry even though I fly only a couple times a year just to save myself the hassle.

Is this new? Been doing this for years when I've flown in Europe.
People who travel frequently generally pull out everything. They put phones, key's, and whatever's in their pockets in one bin, bags on the belt, and laptop in another. The only thing it really changes is to put tablets in a separate bin.

Saavy US travelers, personal or business not using Pre-Check, usually have only their ID and ticket/smartphone in their pocket and everything else already in a backpack for under seat storage. Once through security belt goes back on and ID back into wallet/purse. Makes getting through security stupid easy and fast.

Illusion of safety. Illusion of freedom. Take your pick, government doesn't care about safety and really doesn't protect against anything.

There are lobbyists who are demanding more security for their employers as an mega industry has morphed around this charade. It'll never die. Never. Follow the $$$ to see why.

I've been asked almost every time to take out laptop and/or iPad from the bag. Sure I take out everything metal as an old habit but it's because I only have a few things on my that is metal and getting stuck in the detector is annoying.

Just another reason to get more people to sign up for TSA Precheck. I.E. give them more money...

...only a matter of time before all the pre-check lines are longer than the regular ones (its already starting to happen in Houston depending on the day and time of the week).

This should drastically cut down on the amount of time it takes for the TSA to steal your valuables. It's a great solution to having to wait in line while they steal your things.

Remind society again how many terrorists they've stopped thanks to these procedures? Oh ok.

PSA: Put a unique sticker on your laptop so that no one else will mistakenly take yours for theirs. A lady took my Mac thinking it was hers because the TSA agent failed to informed anyone that they were putting some laptops back into recirculation.

Oh, and the TSA will at first fight back with the notion that they would have to repay you back for damages.

Why is TSA still a thing? Weren't they proven to be useless at catching weapons etc.? like 95% of weapons were never detected during a study carried out some time ago. Why the hell are they adding extra screening procedures when there hasn't been any attacks carried out by terrorists **** knows how long.

Its possible that a number of terrorists seeing the complicated security decided they did not want to risk the possibility of being caught before committing their actions and chose to do something else. There is no way of tracking those.
its kind of like tracking the number of murders that did not take place because of required waiting periods on gun purchases.

That's far more reasonable than prohibiting carrying mobile devices larger than phones. It has always been like that in Europe, everything electronic has to be put in the X-ray bin.

Thank goodness for this. I'm enrolled in TSA Precheck. It is wonderful to not have to take your laptop, iPad out of the bag or your shoes off when going through security.
Isn't this kind of defeating the purpous of the checks now terrorist just need to become TSA pre check passengers

How far behind is the US? Every airport I've flown through in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia for the last 4 years has required everything bigger than a phone to be placed in a bin with nothing on top or underneath it.

When I travel with my bag, I'm always told to remove my laptop and iPad. Guess it just surprised me that this is news, this seemed to change about 5 years ago in the UK at least - especially considering the risk is probably as great or greater in the US.

What exactly does this article have to do with Apple news? It's a bit of a stretch to say that because some Apple products might have to be removed from your bag that this qualifies as Apple news.

What next MacRumors? Are you going to start running reports on the health care vote to repeal/replace Obamacare because some Senators use Apple products?

This extra paranoia only bothers the innocent citizen. The terrorist will find a way to smuggle things through. In fact, in the USA he can just ask a regular American drug addict to buy him a weapon from the gun shop then he will pay him $3000 for it.

Damage is done, that easy.

lol

I just witnessed this and it was much faster how they had the line. They had 4 "stations" on each X-RAY conveyor with bins showing up below you (on a belt). You had 4 people loading bins at the same time and then going through one of two personal scanners.

In all, the line moved really fast because of the 4 stations and bins under the conveyor belt.
But this is how it is in Europe (it's been a while since I did the Far East). And if you can buy an exemption what is the point? How had checking wise before?

bad, not had.

Since 9/11, remind me again how many airlines in the US have been hijacked and flown into buildings? How many planes have mysteriously "Blown up" in flight? I mean, if you have a clue as to what you are talking about, shouldn't we be seeing planes dropping out of the sky every week? Bottom line - you will NEVER hear about the weapons, drugs and explosives that are discovered - daily.

This is standard policy all over Europe. So why did Trump consider a laptop ban on flights from Europe when safety rules in Europe were clearly superior to those in the US?
