Turning 16 next year. Should I be thinking bout getting a Car?

Infiniti G20

I post this car on every freaking "first car" thread and my post always seems to be skipped by the OP.

It is a GOOD first car. Great design, very reliable, and can be easily modded to look quite sporty.

Take a look at some of them at www.g20.net

Well no matter what kind of used car you buy, the effect on the economy is the same, it only impacts the person you buy it from. He is looking used, not new, so the money is staying local 99% of the time. Plus he isn't in the US from what I understand.

more american used cars bought the higher the resale value of american cars have..... the better reputation the public gets on the american cars the quicker the 2 cars companies get out of bankruptcy and the other one (Ford) starts making a profit. it all leads back up to it some way or another.

I'm not a big fan of big SUV's either, and quite franckly, I'm really not a big fan of Cadillac's either. I'm looking for a car with 4 doors preferably, automatic, not big, not small, colour I don't really mind as I can always go change it to white or black. Any suggestions?

For thousands of dollars, yes. Don't even think about painting a $4000 car - the paint will be worth more than the car.

Actually, that's only in USA. I live in Canada, and the legal age to drink alchohol is at the age of 19. Here we can only drive alone and start driving on the highways at the age of 18 [G2]. Our license that we take at 16 [G1] only allows us to drive with someone over 4 years of experience (with their G which you can only get after a year with your G2), we cannot drive between the hours of mid-night and five in the morning, and no driving on highways.

 Typical. Why is it that everyone from Ontario talks as if it's the only province in Canada?

Lol Alright.

How about someone gives me suggestions? Here is what I want and don't want;

- Do not like small cars (Nissan Versa, Toyota Yaris...)
- Not Expensive on maintenance or on repairs
- I don't like toyota's or honda's
- Preferably 4 doors

I forgot to mention, about the maintenance and the repairs, my dad has a couple of friend's that work with cars and such so I could probably get a good deal.

Point freaking proven. The Infiniti G20 is everything you want in that list

That leaves you the Nissan Sentra, Focus (great car), and Coverlet Cobalt. Which all fit into your requirmenets.

Those cars are all about the same size and all much larger than something like the versa. I have also driven all the cars listed for at least a few days straight. I have driving the Versa for about 2 weeks. My current car is a sentra.

You forget about parts. Those you will not be able to get a good deal on. They will cost you the same no matter where you really go.

Best tip when buying used is to stay away from the dealerships. That way you can avoid paying taxes on whatever you purchase. Also, make sure to get a mechanical inspection done on any car you want to buy. A few $$ up front, but can save you a huge amount in the end.

Last tip. Check with your insurance company on anything you want to purchase. When I was 16 my insurance per year was more than my car was worth! It's worth it to get a slightly less sporty car if it means a much lower insurance payment.

Unless of course your folkies are paying your insurance. If that's the case, ignore everything I said. :p

I'm turning 16 years old next year and I have been thinking about getting a car. My parents agreed with me as I decided not to drive my mom's 2009 Subaru WRX 265 and my dad's 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche. With that being said, they came to decision to buy me a car under 4000$. I have been looking around for a couple of weeks and found a couple. Today, while searching, I came across a wonderful old car that I fell in love with. Do you think that a 1995 BMW 318I at cost of 3,500$ would be an appropriate car at 16?

I wouldn't recommend it. Something a little less high-profile that will be newer would probably be better. I'm 16 and I have a 1994 Isuzu Rodeo. But then again, I got it for free :)

.... automatic,...

NO! Get a manual, for Ross's sake (I am Ross). We need to save the manual transmission from being phased out. Trust me, you will love driving stick once you learn. Hell, learning's fun too!

For what it's worth, Saabs are rock solid, even for old age. Check out a 2000 Saab 9-5 sedan. Classy, reliable, midsize, stick shift. Can't go wrong.

I've heard that aswel. My mom's subaru is manual, but honestly, I rather the automatic for my first year or so. I don't know, I'm sorta attached to the BMW. I found another one 1996 BMW 328I. As usual, I have changed what car I wanted a lot... at first it was a Jeep, then went to a mazda, and then a golf, then a jetta and now BMW lol

I WANNA THANK EVERYONE!

PLEASE KEEP POSTING BECAUSE I LOVE TO HEAR WHAT PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY:p

If you want the BMW, get the BMW. What do you want me to say? :p

I haven't read the thread but get a car, get a BMW 3 Series preferably with the newer body style, curves baby curves :p

Your not being responsible with the information given to you. Tell your parents, it's there money. Buy what ever car they be leave will be a good first car for you and shut up. But say thank you.

I wouldn't buy a car if I was in high school again, if you do everyone will always want rides places and it will become more of a chore than something fun, I did it for about a month before I started charging alot for gas to keep people from asking for rides when I was in HS.

I had a 67 Mustang with a 351 Cleveland V8, it was a really tough car to drive and always needed work, I had to sell it when I went to college because it was a terrible commuting car :(, I still think about it all the time. I'm only 18 btw, if you guys were thinking I was in my 40's or something :p.

So my suggestions, pick whatever one you like most haha

1. Save money to buy a nice car when you get out of HS and go to work/college
2. Buy a civic, any civic from 1990+, those cars are very easy to work on and parts are cheap, you should be able to find one in really good shape for $6000, just don't rice it out.

And if possible have your cousin-in-law go with you when you go look at a used car so he can check to make sure it doesn't have any hidden problems.

Thats very true. I'm only 20, and I didn't get my car until I was 19. It was cool at first, but now I hate driving places, its a total chore. Its nice being able to get around, but the fact that I need to make monthly payments of $140 for my car, + $175 for insurance (perfect driving record, just have full coverage) + gas, it suddenly isn't fun. Its a large expense all around.

Nice I have drove a very similar Mustang and can tell you what a bitch it was to drive, but how fun. I can say, newer modern Muscle car makes a good two person short commuter.

Tahaha, the good thing is that in Ontario, you can only drive by yourself at 18, and by then, i wont be in high school so i'm good.

Is that really the case? If so, wow, I know that in Alberta once you get your Class 5 you can drive by yourself on any road in the province. I kind of think that not being able to drive by yourself until you're 18 is a little... much?

I don't mind, I still get to drive at 16. Sure it would be nice to be able to drive a lone but as long as i can sit behind the wheel, im good :p

When I turned 16 I got a 2000 Toyota Camry LE. Reliable, safe, good on gas and well built. I'm sure you could find a good example of a Camry or Accord for a low price with decent mileage. They are also super cheap to insure and definitely won't be a cop magnet. Another great thing is they are super reliable. During my 2 years with my car I never did anything but change the oil, rotate the tires, and replaced spark-plugs and a few other higher mileage things.

Now I own a 2000 Cadillac Seville STS. It's fast, good looking, comfortable... but it's also an expensive 9 year old luxury car. In the past year I've put almost $2k into maintenance and upkeep, and there is still things I want done to it. BMW's, Cadillac's, Mercedes, Audi... anything along those lines is going to need expensive repairs that will eventually outweigh the cost of the actual car. If you want something reliable... buy Japanese. If you want something fun... you'll be paying a price.

I'm not a big fan of Cadillac. I saw a picture of the car (BMW) in red, I'm just in love with it so bad! I can already see my self driving it with my fam in the car (as i have to drive with some that has their license for over 5 years. I have a question. If YOU have the money to pay your own car and YOU will be paying for the gas and the insurance (that is if my parents don't offer to), do you think your parent (dad) can tell you which car u can and can't buy?

YES OR NO? AND WHY?!

Most people aren't fans of Cadillac... large and old farts drive them haha. However it's what I wanted and it's been a really great car. I've been paying for it and when it gets old and expensive to repair... I'll buy another.

If you are paying everything for you car, you should be able to get whatever you want. However with anything even remotely sporty you'll pay huge insurance premiums since your 16 and just got your license. You might want to wait and get something sporty down the road when you are making decent money at a good job and your insurance has gone down.

BTW here is my car; not large like a Deville, still not small. They are cheap to buy, not cheap to own.

It is my opinion that until one is of legal age, their parents should have a say in what type of vehicle you should have. Why? The reason is simple, they've owned cars longer than you and they have more experience in purchasing them. One can fall in love with a car easily, I know this, because it happens to me often, but when making such an investment, it is important to put aside the emotions and take a look at the hard facts. How much is it going to cost upfront, and down the road. As a Teen, money can be hard to come by, you don't want to be spending extra on maintenance if you don't have to. This is where the parents come in, they can give you advice just like this.

If I were you, I'd pick up a cheap beater that will get you from point A to B with no frills. You're 16, you won't be driving alone, I don't think you need a fancy car. If it dies, you send it away. You want a car that can have minor maintenance done for cheap.

Thats just my opinion though, take it or leave it :)

I agree with the part where i dont need such a fancy nice looking car but the problem with me is that I havent found any other car that I really like. For me, as mentioned before, I have to love the exterior. I know it's the wrong thing to do but its how it works with me. If the exterior is ok, then I like to take it to consideration. I've been looking at toyota's, honda's, nissan's, acura's and other cheap cars but haven't come across anything that I'm to amazed about. The only one that I actually liked out of the Toyota's were the 2003-2005 Toyota Corolla. Unfortunately, they are out of my budget. I don't think spending over 7000$ for a used car which will be my first one is really worth wild.
