We've seen parts leaks/physical mockups/actual image leaks for virtually ever release except this refreshed iPad. I would expect to see a wide variety of iPad mini options in regard to storage, network capabilities, and screen resolution.

Damn, owned for 7 months and outdated already. :(

Sorry to hear that.My I pad 3 will continue to work fine.

20 weeks.get over it.

Switching to lightning connector makes sense in the iPad, that way their whole (most) mobile line can switch to lightning in the same year. Improved interior would be nice, does it still over heat with the retina display?

It never overheated.

Yeah, but my 3rd gen iPad does something this new revised iPad cannot - it runs the Google maps application because it is still running iOS 5.1.1 :D.

Haha! I can't call you out on that! I don't use Maps enough to not upgrade to iOS 6. But Apple Maps really is very bad.

Meh, A negligible spec bump and a move to get more users into their propriety and obscenely overpriced Lightning connector before the holidays.

The 'latest and greatest' sheep that run and buy whatever comes out is just gravy.

The magic trick Apple has pulled is flat out amazing. They are all about making obscene profits anyway they can, while fooling their customers into thinking they are buying into something magical and innovative. They remind me of the golf company Taylor Made. Taylor Made once made revolutionary golf drivers. But then they realized they could make a dump truck of money by accelerating their release cycles with minor tweaks. They still make good equipment....but they'll release 2-3 minor updates between every signficant upgrade.

Don't care about the updated lightning model, I'm perfectly fine with my launch new iPad beautiful Samsung display. :)

They will, at some point, release an ipad with lightning connector.

Your options are hardly limited.

How can you say that?

Right now, I do not have the option of buying an iPadthat shares connectors with my iPhone 5. By definition that option is limited. There is no other way of interpretting that.

Many believe that because they bought their devices 6 months ago that I should be forced to wait for some arbitrary time frame. That's asinine.

The New iPad, with Lightning.

What I want is the iPad mini in the same colors as the iPod Touch. Or at least a Project Red iPad Mini.

If I were Apple (and not that I personally would like it) I would go off this expected yearly cycle on all their iOS devices. With the enormous volume of devices they sell, it puts too much pressure on the supply chain AND Apple.
Investors expect it and if they fall just a tiny bit short...BAM! Down goes the stock!
Didn't they leave MacWorld or whatever it was called, for this very reason of having to announce products on MacWorld's schedule and not their own?

Personally I would like to see development of a "retrofit plug" that accepts the Lightning connector and permanently fills the existing 30-pin slot with a flush-fit block.

When you've actually used Lightning for a couple of weeks you hate dealing with the 30-pin.

This was expected & will be a near silent update. It will not include any performance or feature updates. Existing dock connector models will not be fire saled. Apple just wants consistency among all iOS products & doesn't want to wait until the next true update in the spring.

Never let an imaginary controversy go to waste. :D

WAAAHHHH now my iPad is absolete!! How dare Apple continue making new products!!!!

Some of you people really need to grow up. your (new) iPad will still continue working just fine. Apple has no obligation to leave certain amount of time between refreshes. It will be an extremely minor update anyway. New connector and probably new screen technology that will allow better battery life.

I think you guys really need to think outside the box. Apple doesn't need to stick to rigid 1 yr refresh cycles. I expect iPad updates to be more unpredictable just like Mac's. That's why it's now "iPad" instead of adding the number.

On the positive note, when the battery starts to die, you can probably exchange your wire and ipad for a lightning wire and ipad. It won't be a huge deal.

And that's exactly why I said imo cause to me anything smaller is ridiculous. And I lol at people who think the iPad is too big to take around
Ever notice how people who read books (you know, the ones made of paper) tend to hold them in one hand? Ever notice how people who use an iPad have both hands tied up like an idiot because it's too wide to grip with one hand? I can just barely do it and I have long fingers. A 7" is a one-hand iPad, and some people will enjoy that. Rumor has it that this event will focus on iBooks, ya think it's a coincidence that they're introducing a 7" iPad at the same time?

I'm going to guess that they bump storage, that way they are one-up on the Microsoft Surface tablet ($499, 32GB).

Why is it unfair? If there is a defect then bring it to the Apple store for repair/replacement.

Presumably those people that bought 2 months ago did so because they WANTED an iPad. They GOT an iPad. And my guess is that they are HAPPY with that iPad.

Apple, or any company, doesn't owe them stopping or delaying releases. Manufacturers don't need to protect resale values.

Releasing a new product its fine. Fixing problems and re-launching within few months its unfair for the consumer.

Please make sure you post your complaint that you file here on these message boards. It will make for some fine reading!

I will post pics of the new iPad!

A lot of people are in the same situation, myself included. I'm not going to buy a new iPad just so the connector is the same as my iPhone 5. I'll buy a new iPad on the next full update cycle if its worth updating.

Of course, I won't be surprised if we see a minor update to the existing iPad for the new connector. But that makes me wonder what they'll do with the iPhone 4S as they'll still be selling that one for at least another year.

They shouldn't have been charging premium price for a product they planned to make old news within 6 months. People need to get what we are saying here, in that the iPad if it refreshed so soon was not value for money. Period.

If you can't see the value in a $500 tablet then there is nothing more that will convince you otherwise. It shouldn't matter when the product gets updated because it will eventually be updated at some point in time. Just stick with what you have that works well for you instead of trying to "keep up with the Jones'" I understand the nature of wanting the best perceived value but that idea doesn't work very well for tech products.

Wonder what this means for the March iPad cycle release.

I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see an update in March anymore...
Having two different times for substantial updates to two big product lines must be making life easier during retooling and product testing. However, March is just past western and Chinese new year gift giving seasons and a few months too early for summer break gift giving. They might move the A6X + whatever else type of a big update towards late April or May, but not any closer to the iPhone launch.

I am assuming this update is just for lightning connector, LTE for other countries and maybe a 32nm version of A5X for a bit less power dissipation.

Where do you live? What kind of problems did you have? Around here it worked better for me than Google Maps or Garmin using Nokia's maps.

Tim: "You know - we're going to make a KILLING on selling these new adapters and cables because of the iPhone 5. We're not really due for a refresh of the iPad - but if we went ahead and sold one with the new cable, we could sell ever more lightening cables. No reason to wait. "

imagine the licensing ;)

And this is why competition is needed. There's no doubt Apple is very aware of what is about to be unleashed on this world. Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets. They love using the word ecosystem. Will MS already has a massive majority of the world on their OS, now to give them the tablet and phone to complete the ecosystem is Apple's worst nightmare. Many Apple blind followers will easily dismiss MS, but Apple being in the business, knows better.

I do hope that this isn't the case.

As I just bought my iPad last month! I waited until they announced the iPhone 5 just in case if they mentioned anything about newer internals.

As they didn't, I decided to take the plunge. I so hope that they don't update. If they do, i'll be going to the Apple store and talking to the Manager.

I can _maybe_ see an update to the connecter on the 3rd Gen, but they really need somewhere to go on the "regular" product update timeline. So I can't imagine a change in SOC, display tech, or anything else that's a major spec improvement. I also don't think the A6 - as it sits - is ready for the ~2.3M pixel difference in the 3rd Gen vs. iPhone 5 displays.

I will post pics of the new iPad!

I beleve the update is primarily to upgrade to the lightning connector. It might be worse to continue to make iPads with the problems still intact. That could be considered unfair to new users.
