I feel like there's someone out there putting pills on the drinks of these people running these companies, making choose bad options for their companies. The people running twitter seem to be losing touch

I don't even use twitter. Maybe I'm the last one?

No, you're not. I don't use it either. It does seem to me that it's going to be shut down before I ever bother with it.

And yet, it'll always be with us, in the form of verbal communication when friends say "hashtag" before whatever else they have to say.

I don't blame them, I've not heard of many people using anything but the Twitter website or a smartphone app. Seems like a waste of money to me

Don't forget, TweetDeck was bought by Twitter. Though their first "new" version was lacking a few of the original features, their recent update (including on Mac) has brought it back almost to parity. It was enough to make me switch back to TweetDeck.

That is more functional that the "official" Twitter client in many ways. It may have been a matter of focusing on just one. Maybe TweetDeck will eventually become the Twitter App.
This. I'm surprised this angle wasn't in the original post.

Why do you feel the need to reply "+1" instead of actually rating the comment +1?

Twitter is part of Mountain Lion OS X.

On top of the new notification panel, you can post twitter directly.

It's viewing that's the problem... but plenty of 3rd apps allow you to view it without opening the browser.

I don't think you get it...

Twitter's a massive waste of time anyway. I honestly can't believe some people on there have 10,000+ tweets... don't any of these people work, or have better things to do with their lives?

I have an account, mainly to follow musicians and sports. However, the traditional means of going to the appropriate websites is much more insightful.

Maybe it's just me that doesn't see the appeal of voicing my every thought.

A quote from the movie Easy A comes to mind:

I don't know what your generation's fascination is with documenting your every thought... but I can assure you, they're not all diamonds. "Roman is having an OK day, and bought a Coke Zero at the gas station. Raise the roof." Who gives a rat's ass?

Your ignorance makes me laugh. Twitter is a wonderful thing, and a great way to make money. I make $200+ a week on Twitter and I basically do nothing... Post tweets and have my followers click on links... Pretty simple and I'm getting paid to do it. I wouldn't consider that a waste of time. I also just started two months ago, and as my Twitter followers grow, that weekly paycheck (More of a payment to my PayPal account) will increase. My Twitter link is in my signature if you don't believe me... I would never consider it a full time job as we all know it won't be there forever... But the extra money along with my regular paycheck has been quite awesome.

Twitter is a growing sensation, and there's lots of money to be made with it... At least until Twitter drives themselves into the ground.

Good to know. I made a call today too. Twitter for me is done. I won't quit completely right away, but the writing is on the wall and I'm less inclined to use the service these days anyway.

Really, Apple needs to buy this company and put them out of their "we need to make money if it kills us" misery.

Twitter-Mac always seemed to be kind of clunky, trying to look and behave too much like iOS. I say that even though I'm one of the ones who actually paid money for it and still finds it useful.

Of course now on Mountain Lion and even Lion, the Mac OS has changed to look like the Twitter Mac app (or rather, iOS), but underneath Twitter-Mac is still heavy with custom code doing all its iOS-style stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's less expensive for Twitter to create (or buy) a new Mac app rather than basically re-write Twitter-Mac.

Now I mostly use Instadesk's Appetizer, but that's another story. :)

Don't the news apps provide breaking news though? When news occurs, it can sometimes go on TV immediately (if it is important), and I always see it on my iPhone at the same time.

Believe it or not, it's actually considerably quicker than both. Case in point (and i'm using sports because this is my line of work), the NBA draft this year. Twitter actually managed to break the draft picks before they were even announced by the David Stern, the NBA commish. It also announced trades beforehand by insiders within the league, allowing teams to move much quicker and secure certain players during the draft. I wish I could find you the article talking about the twitter revolution in sports, but I can't find it right now. It just discusses how players find out they are traded via Twitter, because the team owners themselves have to go through all the red tape of making an official announcement and scheduling a meeting.

I admit I was a skeptic at first, but it's really pretty informative if you want lightning fast information. And those few seconds or minutes are huge when it comes to getting your story out first (with legitimate sources, obviously...but that's another debate)

Exactly. It's a lot harder to force ads on you and track your activities from a third party client.

How do you want them to pay for the service they provide you. Do YOU want to pay for it?

Perhaps they are planning better integration into the Mac OS? Thereby having no need for a separate app?

A 140 character tweet does not need a retina display to present.

An app that ran years ago to deliver a 140 character tweet will work just fine going forward unless Apple itself makes it and many other apps incompatible with future OS releases due to over zealous deprecation.

Just Rocketman

How much functionality is actually needed to send a friggin' tweet?

Redundant??

Since OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) has built-in support for Twitter (and Facebook support is coming soon), it may not be important that Twitter is discontinuing Twitter for Mac support...

None of my friends use Twitter except that a couple of them collectively made a fake account and put a few posts on it to try and get followers just for fun. I don't think they got any.

The funny thing about the # is that people are supposedly using it as a way to emphasize things on Twitter, effectively spamming and ruining the whole category system. It's a mess. One day, when this thing dies, someone else is going to make a lot of money with a Twitter-ish site that replaces it.

Really, Apple needs to buy this company and put them out of their "we need to make money if it kills us" misery.

Problem with that is the owners of Twitter look at other social networking sites that have floated, reckon theirs is worth the same and come up with a telephone number valuation.

How much would Twitter really be worth to Apple? Or to anyone?

It's a good idea, a good service but that doesn't mean it's worth good money.

Um. . . why do we need a Twitter for Mac app? It's a website. You can use a web browser to access it if you want to. Non-issue.

I don't understand, is twitter trying to shut itself down? All I here is bad news lately. Are they running out of their funding or something?

I think twitter just wants to lock down its EcoSystem, and Macs make up a very small percentage of desktop/laptop users ( something like 8% ), so it might not be worth it to keep the Mac Version going.

What a shame, it's still a brilliant client - largely because it remains pretty much identical to Tweetie unlike their iOS app that is a terrible, terrible distortion of what Tweetie used to be.

Why does anything Twitter touch turn to ass?

download it while you can. on a related note i was dumb and got rid of the old version w/o that ugly gray bar on top, does anyone know where to still get it?

Oh, you guys

Twitter for Mac client is going to be made obsolete thanks to support that will baked right into Safari and OS X. You won't need a TwitMac.

Apple is negotiating to take a seat on the Twitter board to solidify that deal and get the all the API tokens they will ever need.

In exchange Twitter gets six hundred cases of iTunes Ping t-shirts. And several Haliburton cases full of money.

There is a way to enable classic mode if I am not mistaken. A quick google search should help you.

wtf, why? they JUST integrated it into the iPhone, and put out the app last year. this makes no sense.

How do you make money? what are you providing that is of value to someone to give you money? I'm not trying to troll, just trying to figure out how twitter can be a business model, i personally don't get twitter, and many said it seems to be a waste of time and energy.

Twitter seems to be making stupid decisions a la Netflix from a year or two ago.

I still fail to understand why they would limit third-party apps from tying into their network beyond a certain number of users. More users for the network is better for the long-term viability of the product, is it not? Why would they care how a user gets to Twitter as long as they're using Twitter?
