How much fun would it be for Apple to hold a press conference to announce that the next iPhone will be delayed until the summer of 2012.

I would wet my pants.

Yeah, I'm sure their shareholders and customers would just love that.

You know, i wouldn't put it past them. They know they are on the top of the pile and have nothing to prove. They can do what they want and know everyone will buy their items when the do come out.

I would laugh. So hard. Especially since the iPhone forum is now just a bunch of b***hing and whining about the next iPhone. It's so tiring.

When you can't buy the best, settle for the rest.

Honestly, the iPhone 4 is still the best phone out there, so if you will not wait for the next one, just buy one of those instead.

Sure some other devices have better hardware specs, for total experience and usability, the iphone 4 is still the best phone ever made, and will be until the iPhone 5 is launched.

I suggest you just wait.

Its exactly what im about to do (buy a 4.) Can't be bothered with the hoopla with the 5, and the 4 still blows everything else out of the water.

Source (and there are other benchmarks there too and iPhone looks just as bad on all of them)

That's a very fanboyish statement that you made there.

To me, there is no "the best phone ever", it's wholly dependant on preference as well as requirements. To some, the Galaxy S II might be more attractive and might find the iPhone repulsive. However, certain people prefer the iPhone and the usability of iOS.

Dang, the render of the iPhone 5 teardrop design does look sexy.

I could go for the iPhone 5 but I want a dedicated camera button...this also deters me from the Galaxy S II.

The new software makes the + volume button snap pics when camera app is running.

So...I should buy another iPhone 4 to replace the one I just lost, since I'm not probably not going to be able buy the 5 until about the middle of next year. Fantastic. :(

These are rumors, remember?
One Rumor also came out saying Foxconn producing 150K iPhones per day. So will iPhone 5 will see shortage, NO. This Rumor says there would be shortage for iPhone 5 till early 2012. Contradictory rumors, you see. We'll see plenty of iPhones next month.

Ok, my predictions IF Apple launch two iPhone models:

iPhone 4S:

Offered in 8 and 16GB versions.
Same design and size/ shape as current iPhone.
Re-engineered antenna.
Plastic back instead of glass.
Same gorilla glass front and retina display and screen size as current iPhone 4.
Possibly improved bluetooth.
Same 3G radio as present, HSDPA etc.
Dual core A5 system on a chip running up to 1GHZ.
512mb of ram.
Possibly improved battery life.
Sony Ericsson Exmoor R 8 megapixel camera, not sure about lens?
VGA front camera.
720p video recording.
Same home button as present.
Offered in Black and White from launch.
Launched within a week of announcement.
Will be priced lower then current model.
Hopefully it will be a lighter phone too partly thanks to a plastic back.
WiFi B,G,N 2.4ghz.
Same dock connector as present.

iPhone 5:
Offered in 16? 32 and 64GB versions
Totally new design, thinner, wider, longer, with possibly tapered tear drop design?
4" front screen Very high resolution 720P?, same screen tech as current Retina display to provide wide viewing angle and visible under sunlight display, Screen could possibly be 4.3" in size?
Gorilla glass front with a curved design (Why else did they buy those glass cutters?) with liquid metal back.
Latest bluetooth version, I think it's 3?
4G LTE possibly for US market, Worldwide 3G or 4G radio phone for rest of the market.
NFC will be included.
Dual Core A5 system on a chip up to 1.3 or 1.4ghz speed.
1GB of ram.
Elongated home button, capacitive type.
1.3 megapixel front camera.
8 megapixel or higher rear camera, no idea by who as the Exmoor R may not fit in a thinner design? Will take up to 1080p video, improved flash unit.
Bigger capacity battery.
WiFi B,G 2.4, WiFi N 2.4 and 5ghz band.
Offered in Black and White from launch.
On sale December or January?
Announced next month.
Will be priced slightly higher then the current iPhone 4.
Different dock connector designed to work with current connectors and a new Thunderbolt standard?

This is what I hope to happen also as I would be happy with the iPhone 4S with those specs, it will also offer enough of a difference between the two phones and will equally make them both as desirable to sell well.
The only sticky point is the screen resolution. Can Apple make a 4 or 4.3" screen with 720P resolution AND keep the developers happy? Some phones are coming out with 720P screens.
Also a lot of mid range to bottom of high range market phones can beat the iPhone 4 on specs, if apple make the iPhone 4S like the above and sell it at a price between the two markets it should steal sales from both.

Why price it slightly higher than the current iPhone 4? The iPhone 4 was stretching it at bit at £510 ($805). If they'd do a price increase, it'd be about £30 at most more, even though I would hope that they do not.

Yeah, it is a very expensive phone, maybe they could charge an extra £10 on it? This is Apple, I just think they will bump the cost up a bit more if they max the specifications. Or it will be the same price. It is way more then a Galaxy S2 at present so I could be wrong and they'll keep the pricing the same.

Trying to justify its costs is bad enough, but I have to get two, since I do iOS development

I like your points, best speculation as of yet, not shure on the front curved glass, I know about the rumours of the glass cutting machines but this could be for a curved rear glass, like a render on here last week,

which would allow wireless charging.

But I would buy the 5 on your specks ;)

And ah damn it!! I forgot about the wireless charging! So that is an interesting thought to. It could be one of those surprise features and that would make sense with the curved glass.
I based the front being curved because the Nexus has that chin on the bottom.

If Apple don't introduce a new design it will I think be because the A6 system on a chip according to the story's is going to be off the planet! It will be quad core and use the new 3D transistor design Intel has been working on and have the next gen graphics chip. That could be the best time to introduce a new design. I don't think an iPad 3 will be launched until this chip can be fitted, and then I also believe we will see a retina screen on the iPad.

They wouldn't transition to Intel, given that they've worked so much on SoC through their own teams.

They aren't transitioning to Intel? What I am saying is the new A6 chip being made for Apple is using the 3D transistor technology 'like' what Intel has been working on. I guess it is licensed from Intel, no idea, but Intel aren't making the chip.
