How do you explain the Samsung Galaxy S II, a phone more expensive than the iPhone available on less carriers (and until like this week, not available at all in the US) being the #1 selling Android device since its introduction then ?

Because its a great new smartphone... Your statement has nothing to do with what I said.

The iPhone 4 is the best selling smartphone in the world followed by the 3GS in second place... However we're weeks away from a new iPhone of course it isn't going to sell as well as a brand new phone.

not a huge surprise is it? Apple once again releases a product that cant keep up with demand. happened last year. will happen next year and the year after.

maybe if they werent so damn secretive, more companies could pitch in. but.... if they met the demand... the phones wouldnt be near as popular. tisk tisk apple

Seriously, I'd be happy if they just told us what's coming. Then I could at least choose what I wanted to do. They can delay all they like if I know what's coming down the pike.

can I be added to a "hardship" list for delivery of early iPhone 5's when they are available? :)

The old fashioned voice part of my iPhone stopped working in MARCH! So I've been just using text to keep in touch. People call and I answer saying - "iPhone broken - I can only get texts, so text me!"

It's not apple fault of course, but I've been paying a pretty penny to AT&T for what is essentially text only service as I wait, continuing to think the iPhone 5 is always right around the courner...

Like, that's totally brilliant! You won't purchase an iPhone 4 because the iPhone 5 isn't available, but you'll buy a Galaxy SII when the Galaxy SIII isn't available.

I love it when people go out of their way to advertise that they're an idiot.

So what do you expect someone in my situation to do? My 3gs has been fubar for the last 3 months and i've been patient, waited, waited, using my ********** Razor. Now this is saying EVEN if it releases sometime in OCT, chances are i wont be able to get one. Should i just maintain my patience? who knows maybe ill just wait for the iPhone 6 or even 7.

No thanks, i'll take my business elsewhere and pick up the closest competitors phone. Galaxy S II here i come.

Good things come to those who wait doesnt apply as well to the tech world, too much innovation at too rapid a pace. Sometimes you have to make the leap.

The iPhone 4 is the best selling smartphone followed by the 3GS because there are no other options for iOS based phones. Some of us are heavily invested and sometimes I'd rather a few more options of phones. I see the diversity in the Android eco-system and I'm kind of jealous but not enough to turn me into a switcher. In the end, it's just a phone and while some of the options out there (hardware keyboards, gamepads, sliders, SAMOLED+) are nice, they aren't worth my investment.

Competition dilutes single model sales but offers consumers other advantages. In the end, the battle of the eco-systems is where it is at these days. Phone models are not what the industry is about, they are about selling you into an eco-system. There they can push "value-added" (read : micropayments) content to you on the device you have.

Apple has their own locked down eco-system, arguably, one that was the most consistent and complete from the get-go and others are now converging their fragmented eco-systems unto Android (while others are trying to launch eco-systems of their own, WP7, webOS, etc..).

But don't try to tell me the tech-savvy ones are anywhere near the majority who purchase these phones...

I'm tech savvy. All my co-workers in development are as well. Most of us choose the iPhone because we work with tech all day and would rather not fiddle with phone settings at night. We just want something that works. Same reason I have an iPad for web surfing and a Tivo for watching TV. I want to relax and not deal with problems.

People who have a lot of free time (i.e. college students) who are tech-savvy, would probably choose the Android over iPhone, but I don't think that's the case for the IT workers. If I was still in college, my priorities would be different, and I might be an Android person.

If there are two new phones coming, and at this point I believe there are, then perhaps there will be "almost" enough of the iPhone 5 which will, as this rumor states, be in short supply at release.

My reasoning is that the teardrop shape, and the larger size may send enough people after the 4s to not cause a MAJOR shortage over the 5.

It will be like the AT&T vs Verizon or the White vs the Black for the iPad 2 release. Someone will want one, while some will want the other.

I would still wait it out till something official pops out.
At this stage, nobody knows for sure.

I am a die hard anything apple fan but this article was extremely disappointing. We were all just waiting for THE announcement for the event.

But seriously, let's take this as what it is. Editors and blog sites had to put something up today since there might not be any other news.
This can be as easily updated with -- THIs turned out to be just a rumor.
OR this is just what it always is. Shortage of iPhone upon launch.. DUHHHHH

I'm in IT. A lot of people I work with switched from iPhone to Android this year. Nexus S, Xperia Play or even cheaper options like Samsung Gio, tons of new and fun models to have.

There is no rules to apply to smartphone choices. Geeks choose Android, Geeks choose iOS. Normal Joes choose iOS, Normal Joes choose Android.

The cellular market has always been a competitive arena, it's not like the PC market where there is one platform that is a monopoly and everything else is a niche. Don't try to apply that logic to mobile platforms.

As am I. But again, I'm not the majority, nor am I close to the majority. I was just commenting on Android users who imply that they're smarter then iPhone users somehow. It just screams trying too hard. It's a phone. iPhone or Android both are great choices, but I'm sorry, the "we get android because we are smarter" crap is a load of horse___. I'm sure there are Apple users who say the same thing.

I do tons of research before I buy anything, and I chose to get Android, and don't regret it. But there's no way that I'll believe that all Android users do the same. I'm quite certain that the majority (read overwhelming majority) have no idea about specs.

Please report back when you buy the SII becuase its my guess your going to hold out.

Why don't you just buy a $29 go-phone from AT&T and use that instead of your iPhone? There are no contract commitments on go phones. They can be used in place of any phone on your same bill. Then, you have a working phone. Albeit a crappy phone, but it can still make calls and text. Then get the iPhone 5 when it comes out in a month.

I did this same thing when my original iPhone crapped out 3 months before the iPhone 4 was released.

I am super tech savvy and I own droid X. But only reason I got droid X was because iPhone wasn't on verizon at that time. This time I won't miss.
Can I seriously be honest though? I really do not understand ANYONE saying anything about someone's ability because of the phone they are fiddling with.

Does anybody understand that someone can be as geeky by fiddling w/ iPhone as much as one w/ droid?
First of all, UNLESS you are a developer developing directly for the phones, all this talk of open source and all other openness is utter crap. To average user for both platform, which are 99% of the population, you are a plain vanilla end user. Which means you are at the mercy of developers.

Learning to use the apps and menus are not that complicated on any phone platform. Let's be real about that.

It is definitely wrong for anyone to call somebody more tech savvy because they are holding a droid. It does not mean a thing. So please.. let's stop all this.

I dont think there will be shortages Apple will just delay the international launch, or keep it exclusive to Apple stores. :)

Suck if they just kept in Apple stores, I don't have one close to me the closest one is 6hrs from me

all of what you said boils down to one thing. as the months go by... tick, ticking away... we use our phones less and less. we fiddle with em less and less. until eventually.... we only pick it up to make calls and texts. with the occasional use of safari while out in the car and maybe tap on the weather channel when someone asks what the weather is gonna be.

that is it. at least after fourteen months of having an i4 that is all i use mine for. well, i did compare mine with my brother's bionic the other day. that bionic is LIGHTENING fast. yet is cant keep up with an outdated iphone on wifi.

I've read the article several times over and I still think we'll be seeing the 5 in 2011; however, I could see the 4s coming out October 7th and then the 5 on October 15. This would explain all the confusion and many dates we've heard already...they could be launching 2 different models at 2 different times.

I'm basing that on the following...

"We’ve heard that there are indeed two different models of iPhone coming out next month (announced this month?) *We still think October 7th is the scheduled release date give or take any delays."

"We therefore think that iPhone 5 will be delayed slightly at the very least and may see shortages all the way into 2012."

As for the shortages, theres nothing new there at all. If you're on this site then I'm pretty sure you're smart enough to know the iPhone 5 will be in very limited supply, hence, the preorders, camping out, etc...

I don't think they would launch the 2 at different times. Maybe take online orders sooner on one then the other (4s first then the 5) but I think Apple would be to afraid that lines for a 4s would not be long enough to consider it a success. They want GIANT lines, thus they will release the two "in stores" together.

While I applaud your Apple loyalty unlike your co/workers I think you are contradicting yourself saying you do not have time like college students and choose the iPhone since you obviously have time to join us here on this blog lol.

iPhone is given away free on contract in many other countries. And the SGS II is not sold on any carriers in the US yet it is the #1 Android handset at the moment, making your point moot.

I'm sorry, but I can't help but call you out for this. I've never heard of iPhone being given away for free on contract in any country in the world. (Best Buy had a one day "sale" where the 3GS was free last Dec. but that was it) In fact, very few countries even offer subsidies on iPhone. You're claiming it happens in many other countries.

I know that making statements without any factual basis is your M.O., but seriously, you have no idea what you're talking about.

Your claim that its given away free on contract in "many other countries" is just another one to add to your long line of saying things that are not true.
