You're right, shortages are just a way for Apple to make it seem like demand is tremendous...

Great theory, but by any reasonable measure demand IS tremendous.

Wasn't the iPad one of the fastest selling consumer electronics products of all time?

And isn't the iPhone the biggest selling smart phone model, and has been for a while now?

Fake shortages are done to make demand seem higher, but that's when there's a shortage AND sales numbers are relatively low (or maybe some of those companies are just really bad at ramping up production and can only get units in the tens of thousands for release).

When you sell in the ballpark of a million units first weekend and sell out all available stock, isn't the more likely theory that you're able to ship a lot of units fast...and yet demand still outpaces that supply?

I see it as a simple psychological effect:

The longer the wait=more hype (here obviously)=higher demand=higher sales=MONEY (for Apple at least)

Oh please, apple is always "Surprised by demand". Come on, go tell that to someone else. They could easily fill demand if they wanted to, but then they wouldn't get the lines and media coverage.

It's a ploy. Sure demand is great for the iPhone on launch day. But the fact that Apple artificially limits offer is not dependant on demand already being great or not. I'm still convinced they do it on purpose. It's not like any extra they would manufacture wouldn't eventually sell. It just makes for a better story if they say they "sold all they could make".

Please get it fixed!! I want a new phone. My 4 drops too many calls!

Hold it correctly.

I'd bought every iphone model until the 4, and was one of those idiots queing up for first day sales, but I grew up and opened my eyes. iPhone 4 should never have been released with that design floor, and having to put a crappy bumper or case over it so you can make calls was a disgrace. I was holding out for the white model which kept getting put back until I'd waited so long, it was already outta date tech when it was released albeit in a pretty shell. Android's ascent should have raised Apple's game, but they didn't bother because they know most of us have invested in apps and the eco system and so we're stuck with being drip-fed this crap over and over again. Well, I weened myself off of iOS and like having something actually that just works and not having to pay £40 for a cable is a nice luxury! Dragging and dropping films/music straight from my laptop to my phone is great too. iPhone has gone from being a really cool game changer to the establishment that even your dad has. I don't like that, personally as tech-geek, it's not about innovation just marketing now....

I dont think there will be shortages Apple will just delay the international launch, or keep it exclusive to Apple stores. :)

delay the international launch? possibly do rolling launches. So by the time iPhone 6 comes out, India would be getting the 5!

I don't think they'll delay international launches

for some reason people are still oblivious to this. Or is it denial?

no, you're just wrong.
I walked into my local Apple Store yesterday, which is in the downtown city region, and held the phone with the "death grip" (which is a popular way of holding the phone to some) and dropped to 1 bar.

Antennagate is very much real

You're right, shortages are just a way for Apple to make it seem like demand is tremendous by controlling initial offer thus generating lines at stores and media coverage for the launch.

It's a PR tactic, they always have "shortages".

That is a fact!! When the Verizon IP4 came out, there were no shortages, no lines, no problems. I could have just walked into my Verizon store and picked one up day one.

Then the articles started about how nobody wanted the IP4 on Verizon and they sold less than they expected.

Two reasons:

1) they had good supply
2) Verizon didn't allow current clients without Upgrades to buy at discounted prices, clients like me either had to pay "Full" Retail or wait for an upgrade. That is the main reason I still have an Droid Incredible. Now I have an upgrade and I'm waiting.

Granted you have the right to switch but sounds like you went from one extreme to the other. You seem to be an Apple hater now. You should wait and see what the iPhone 5 has to offer before putting it down. Going from iFanboy to rational consumer is one thing but going all out anti apple based on antennagate which was hyped to begin with is wrong.

Having owned the iphone 4 for over 15 months, I can confirm that the antenna problem is real. I used to drop calls a lot but once I put a Speck Pixelskin HD case on it, it all stopped so it's definitely a real issue and not overblown.

I must say that those iPhone 5 "renders" look pretty nice!
I wouldn't mind if the real iPhone 5 looked EXACTLY like that.... Wouldn't mind it at all!

If there was a real antenna issue with the iPhone 4, it wouldn't have sold so well. Your move whingers.

The reason the iphone 4 sold well is because they fixed the issue. The initial batch was fixed by apple sending bumpers and cases. After that, apple applied a coating that fixed the issue.

Well... we keep getting tidbits on the new design, through renders and whatnot... but I want to know what the real difference in FEATURES is going to be with the iphone 5... we've heard very little about that. And I don't mean info on a better camera, I mean info on important, ground breaking features. Something to wow me.

There never was such a coating. The reason the issue "went away" in the press and forums is because it was clear Apple wasn't going to do anything to fix it beyond free bumpers for a limited time.

No need to continue on and on about it, it was what it was. You either learned to live with it or moved on.

Im not wrong, both of my iPhone 4 have the same problem. My first one i bought on launch day had this problem and the second I purchased in May has the same issue. And it doesnt just drop 1 bar it completely drops calls

It's obviously a real issue.

It's obviously a real issue.

But since it only happens in low service areas and the phone displays 5 bars for like 80% of its signal band, most people aren't aware it's there and will argue with you that it's not.

Best to drop it, like everyone did last year when it was obvious that Apple wasn't going to fix it.
