I know Apple is really high on AR/3D stuff but I don't know if this is the 'must' have upgrade they think people are clamoring for

It is going to be very useful for AppleMaps in street view for example or inside buildings AR Nav.

What do you mean it’s about time? Pretty much all cellphones with ToF tech were released in 2019. You make it sound like all other brands have had this tech for the last couple of years... lol

People think the moment something is rumoured then with a snap of a finger it should be released. They fail to forget that there is a lot of engineering, testing, re-engineering, re-testing until the product is acceptable for mass market.

Unicorns are possible, snap fingers, yes I have my own unicorn that excretes skittles. :p;)

At this point, no reason to get the 2019 iPhones when Apple is going all in with the 2020 iPhones
That has been my take too. I mean...not much has leaked about the 2019 iPhones that will makes me want to replace my Xs Max to be honest.

I’m perturbed that Apple is supposedly making the high-end phones in such a small phone and such a large phone only. I have the X and the size is perfect. In 2020 if I want something similar I have to make camera/sensor, RAM, screen compromises.. I’m really surprised, and hoping they just scrap the XR and make it equivalent to the others in specs.

How is XR is not equivalent to others? It's actually the best iPhone right now. Cheaper, same processor, has no issues of OLED screens (burn in, flickering), available in more colours. The only real thing missing is second camera, but this year he will get one.

I hope the mods are ok with this.
I'm gonna go ahead and recommend this program for those who either don't have it or are unaware of it.
Fantastic stuff.
You can always upgrade after 12 payments.
Always have the latest and the greatest.
No worries, no debating if you should wait or get a new phone because you are getting the new phone and then just look forward to whatever next year brings.

I think Apple knows this and will come up with something "Magical" to entice people to buy the 2019 models? Maybe?

When a $400 Honor phone launched in 2018 has ToF, it's disappointing to see Apple slowly bring ToF in 2020.

I believe Honor was released in December which is after Apple’s usual September release timeframe, and yes, as far as tech goes, 4 moths does make a difference. Also, the article talks about the 2020 iPhones having ToF but no one knows for sure if this year’s iPhone won’t have ToF.

still barking up the wrong tree.
How about clear call quality and great modem connectivity?
AR is one of those gee wiz technologies  is trying to jamb down our throats when not a single soul asked for it.

At this point consumers are better off just using their iPhone for 3-4 years and then getting what is available at the time. The improvements are getting to be more incremental. Speculation about what technology is coming is perfectly fine (this is a rumor site after all), but ultimately today's iPhone XR will likely provide perfectly acceptable service until the 2021 phones are released for all but the most technologically obsessed.

We know for sure 2019 iPhone won't have ToF. This is because Kuo told us 2020 will have ToF. Every leaked image including the mid-frame of the iPhone 11 shows only 3 rear openings.

You shine a laser out of the phone and time how fast it bounces back. The camera can thus easily build up a 3-d understanding of how far everything is in front of it. Allows easy capture of 3-d models ,but also provides useful information about what to focus on and how to focus.
How is that going to benefit an end user?

"Kuo said in a prior investor's note that implementing ToF would require 5G connectivity because Apple would want to use the feature to create a "revolutionary AR experience." All 2020 iPhones are expected to feature 5G chips."

Another step in the rollout of a completely untested technology that has very real health concerns.
You are end up being a lab rat whether willing....or not.

At this point, it seems like Apple hasn't really invested a whole lot into the 2019 iPhones, but will none the less charge top dollar.

If the rumors are correct and prices stay the same, the 2020 iPhones would be a much better value for the money than the 2019.

Of course, I don't know what Apple is going to do. They might release something amazing in 2019, just when we thought it's they're not.

I haven’t a clue what ToF is.

I don't either but it sounds extremely fancy. Maybe something to do with lasers.

So honest question, and one I bet a lot of people are asking: I want to upgrade phones this year since I have an iPhone 6. Obviously as many have stated, all these 2020 rumors are souring this year's release. What should I get? Refurb of one of the X series that's already out like the X, Xr, XS? Maybe go for an 11r if that's a thing this year? Say screw 2020 and get this year's flagship, crossing the 2020 bridge when I come to it? Thoughts?
