For those choosing to go to the store to pick it up, why? Some reasons I can think of include:

  • You don't work from home and don't want to risk a package coming when you're not home to sign for it
  • You don't want it to or can't have it come to work for some reason
  • You want the comfort of having a specific time (at the store) when you can get your phone
  • You, for some reason, have to have it at the absolutely earliest possible second on Friday, and the store pickup accomplishes that
  • You don't want to risk getting a damaged phone at home and then having to deal with that headache
  • You don't want your wife/husband/girlfriend/mistress/dog or other cohabitant to know
  • You need the store's help in transferring to a new phone
  • You're trading in and need to go to the store to most easily accomplish that process, or simply don't want to put your current phone in the mail (FedEx, etc.), given some of the horror stories that are out there
  • You want to be part of the "launch day social experience" at an Apple Store
What else is there?

I'm just wondering what would incentivize people enough to endure the absolute zoo of being at an Apple Store on a launch day.

Full disclosure: mine are being delivered at home because there is no way I want to endure the zoo experience, plus I have no reason to avoid the extreme convenience of home delivery.
Usually I do ship to home even though I live near an Apple Store. But this time I’m on vacation over launch day and don’t wanna pay for my package to be stored at my hotel until I get get around to setting it up so this time I’m doing pickup

Correct.

Most launch day iPhones are shipped from China to US via UPS; but there are some already in country - those reserved for media influencers, employee use, Apple Store.

One year, I had a launch phone get stalled in China but on launch day, I got a delivery via FedEx from a local Apple warehouse - found out the phone was originally slated for the Apple Store but diverted one for me.

That was a nice gesture on the part of Apple.
This happened last year, my iPhone 15 Pro came in from China but the iPhone 15 was already here in TN. We'll see if thats the same case this year

My ISPU order has moved from Order Placed to Processing. I won't see any further change, I guess, until next Friday when it moves to Ready For Pickup.

I will miss the whole plane tracking thing, which is always lots of fun. But this really is easier for me.

Every time I order on Apple, my Apple Card automatically gets used as a default.

Never even have to pull the card out or open the app to get the CVV or anything.

Just goes right thru!

damn… i had the exact opposite experience, it let me use apple pay and i checked out a minute after preorder started
Good to know, that helps me a lot :p.

I realize this didn't happen to everybody or maybe not even anyone else. I also didn't have this issue in the years before, and it may never happen again.

One observation I've made over time since my first iPhone 3G in 2008 is that they change the process every year, and that it generally gets better, but sometimes it has hiccups. Another aspect is that lots of details are different from their other product orders.

The Apple Store app shows my order is preparing for shipment. Placed order at 5:01am. Got order confirmation e-mail at 5:02am.

iPhone 16 Pro Max in Black Titanium (256GB)

Yep, I’m preparing to ship on the same phone. Order submitted at 8:09 AM Eastern time.

Apple intelligence. 😀

Whew, back on here after work and my morning post about completing my order 3 minutes in on the Apple App for the 16 Pro Max 256 Desert Titanium. Hope most people had good experiences getting orders placed. Let the tracking begin. :) I can't tell you how many years I've done this and looking forward to watching it move. Let's Go!! :)

My iPhone 16PM in natural titanium is preparing ship. I’m on iUP and ready for the yearly plan tracking shenanigans.
Mine just flipped to PTS. Yay! That’s the fastest that’s happened in years. Last year it sat in processing for days.

Before your order ships, you can contact Apple on the phone and request a media swap and use your Ally card.

I had to do that one year when I ordered the Mac Studio Max + Studio Display and my Chase card was flagged as fraud alert for $4500 and ended up using my AMEX to get the order in.

Once the order went to preparing to ship, I called Apple and the rep was able to switch it back to the Chase card.
Thanks. It’s called “media swap”? Just to confirm. It won’t cancel my order will it ? I’ve heard some viscous stories about Apple canceling people’s orders when some grey area requests are made.

The store is two blocks away. :)

It was Apple Pay that wasn't offered to me. I could only use the regular checkout process. The Apple Card was offered and worked, but I had to spend time getting the CVV and expiration date, all with the clock ticking.

For many years (about a decade), I've also had a long-standing bug in Apple Pay that ONLY got triggered on iPhone purchases each year, where it doesn't like my address. EVERYTHING ELSE (MacBooks, iPads, etc. etc.) goes through without any issue, every time so far.
Yeah I had this issue perhaps also today when ordering. Used Apple Pay and selected another card and it wanted me to fill in shipping address. I had thought all this was done before when I added that card to Apple Pay ?

ENSURING the trade in isn't screwed up. Period. TWICE I did mail trade in, TWICE it was lost. End of story.

The only time I ever did store pickup was when I was on vacation during launch day on the other side of the country, so I picked it up from a store where I was while I was out of town.

I've had the same positive experiences you've had with delivery except they were all ISPU. They've refined the process so you have check-in windows that you absolutely have to stick to or they won't see you (earlier the better), and things run even smoother when you get fast reps who like their jobs. I haven't had an ISPU that went longer than 20 mins in over 6 years.

On the flip side, all my nightmare scenarios and almost not getting my phone delivered at all came from dealing with UPS or FedEx. I don't like to disparage service workers but deliveries are honestly a crapshoot and you only think it's convenient until you're chasing down trucks who drive by your house on purpose or just lose your packages altogether.

Everything is relative when it comes down to it. I'm glad for whoever finds the method that works for them. 👍
Can somebody PLEASE share what the ISPU set up will look like at the typical Apple store? Mine is in a mall. It opens at 10, my appointment isn't until 1:00. For ISPU, do I skip the lines and go directly into the store and check in at the appropriate time? Are there two lines, one for ISPU and another for people that didn't preorder? If there are two lines, how do employees weed out the people that show up super early? Will there be signage? Or do you just look for the back of the line and inquire with your fellow shoppers? ~TIA

Well, you know, if you order from Apple, it won't change from Preparing to Ship until it clears customs, literally a day or so before it arrives. The only way to get the full tracking number is to have UPS MyChoice and it posts the entire tracking number in there as soon as the label is created, unless they've changed things, but that's how it's been for as long as I can remember.

Two lines. One for spots and one for not order/appt.

if there is no sign, go to to the front and tell the employee you have appt.

Mine is in a mall also. There are two lines outside the store. One is for people that have pre-ordered and have an appointment and the other is for people who don’t have an appointment. There’s a gatekeeper at the front that will check you in and show you where to wait. There are more employees inside directing traffic. Eventually you will be assigned to a person who will fetch your phone and direct you to an area where you can set it up. At least that’s how it works at mine.
