For those choosing to go to the store to pick it up, why? Some reasons I can think of include:

  • You don't work from home and don't want to risk a package coming when you're not home to sign for it
  • You don't want it to or can't have it come to work for some reason
  • You want the comfort of having a specific time (at the store) when you can get your phone
  • You, for some reason, have to have it at the absolutely earliest possible second on Friday, and the store pickup accomplishes that
  • You don't want to risk getting a damaged phone at home and then having to deal with that headache
  • You don't want your wife/husband/girlfriend/mistress/dog or other cohabitant to know
  • You need the store's help in transferring to a new phone
  • You're trading in and need to go to the store to most easily accomplish that process, or simply don't want to put your current phone in the mail (FedEx, etc.), given some of the horror stories that are out there
  • You want to be part of the "launch day social experience" at an Apple Store
What else is there?

I'm just wondering what would incentivize people enough to endure the absolute zoo of being at an Apple Store on a launch day.

Full disclosure: mine are being delivered at home because there is no way I want to endure the zoo experience, plus I have no reason to avoid the extreme convenience of home delivery.
I just like going to the Apple Store during the chaos

I personally prefer handing my IUP trade-in to a physical human being versus it getting stolen mid-transit via UPS.

I have been doing store pickup for my last 2 upgrades, including the current one because it’s more convenient as I can take my trade in with me and get it done in the same day. In Houston we have 7 Apple Stores so going for pickup is not a zoo. For the iPhone 14 Pro Max back in 2022 took me 1 hour and 15 mins total after arriving to the Apple Store and that included transferring all the data from my old iPhone to the new one. I always pick lunch time slots as those are the less busy.

Hated waiting around for when the UPS person would be arriving to sign. Last year, no one would be home to sign for it when the actual date dropped. Had to redirect via UPS Choice to my hotel where I was for work so it delayed receipt by several days, but at least, it didn’t get sent back to VZW. They would not hold it at UPS Store as I requested for weekend pickup.

Plus, this year, it will be grand opening of our new Apple Store so I will get to check that out as well.

I've had the same positive experiences you've had with delivery except they were all ISPU. They've refined the process so you have check-in windows that you absolutely have to stick to or they won't see you (earlier the better), and things run even smoother when you get fast reps who like their jobs. I haven't had an ISPU that went longer than 20 mins in over 6 years.

On the flip side, all my nightmare scenarios and almost not getting my phone delivered at all came from dealing with UPS or FedEx. I don't like to disparage service workers but deliveries are honestly a crapshoot and you only think it's convenient until you're chasing down trucks who drive by your house on purpose or just lose your packages altogether.

Everything is relative when it comes down to it. I'm glad for whoever finds the method that works for them. 👍

Wish I’d known this at 4:59 PST this morning Haha. I’ve always assumed it’s chaos and shipping it is easier. Next year, I suppose.

Does Apple use FedEx for phones? I have a shipment coming from Apple Superhub in Clayton IN and it’s 3 lbs??? Says overnight priority! No date for delivery yet… not doing a trade in … only phone and otterbox case …

LOL when you have a great UPS/FedEx person your delivery problems don't exist. Sadly covid changed a lot of things and at least where I live those people found other jobs or retired.

Also as others have said, I like knowing when I'll get something I bought and working on my own time. Waiting around for huge chunks of the day drives me crazy. 😂🤣

Still no confirmation email despite everything showing in the app and online, being charged, and getting Citizens One emails this morning, lol.

Ordered at 8:03.

I shipped mine to my office this year because I didn’t have anyone home to sign for it and I can’t take off because I’m leaving for England the next day. So here’s hoping UPS doesn’t hose me.

and so it begins again. The annual pre-order at 5:00 AM (Pacific time) and tracking our new toy(s).

In addition to this phone, I am upgrading my Apple Watch Series 4 to the Ultra 2 (black titanium).

You are going to be very pleased with that Watch Ultra 2 upgrade. I went from Series 7 to AW Ultra 1 and it's probably the best upgrade I've done. Battery life on the Ultra is amazing. I use my watch for golf (GPS) and Series 7 could even get through 3 hours of a round. AW Ultra 1 still has 60% left after full round.

Two years ago UPS lost my 14PM and I waited all day- it said out for delivery- for the truck to pass my house at 8pm and CS to tell me my phone was missing. It was a nightmare to work between Apple and AT&T to finally get my upgrade reset- took over a week. So no I don’t do orders anymore.

Last year I had a 5:30pm pickup after work, waited 5 minutes and was out of the store. Easy peasy. It was on my time and my day wasn’t spent tracking a truck. It also helps that I can easily drive to 6 Apple stores around me so plenty of stock.

ISPU movement babyyyy!

I'd rather hand my trade in to a real person and know it's been accepted.
I live 10 minutes from one Apple store and 15 minutes from another so I have multiple store options to choose from.
I'm retired, but I do have to work around walking my dog in the morning and evening, and if I make an ISPU appointment I can time it just right. UPS usually comes around the same time, but on delivery day it could come very late, and Max would be tapping his little paw at the door with his legs crossed.
If I have to sit around and wait, I might as well do it at the store which is at least amusing.
I don't have to worry that the phone that arrives at home will be damaged or missing.

I did the App drop and load on the iPhone. Kept it steady on the iPad and had the Store open on Mac Safari.

Mac Safari was available and I had checked out, before the iPhone Apple Store would load. For my wife the iPad was first ...

This was different from the past, where the iPhone was typically first ...
This was how it happened for me this morning too. Mac loaded first, when completed, phone and iPad were still waiting.
It is! My friends and family think I'm crazy to get so excited about this. So much eye rolling, when I try to explain about Apple Order Day. :)
People just don't understand. I love being on here and hearing from all of you!

I usually do delivery @ home. Just so happens that I will be at a conference next Friday and Saturday. There is an Apple Store near the hotel-(10min walking) so I can either wait until Sunday when the phone is delivered to my house on Friday or pick up Friday afternoon when I skip out early to join the "zoo" :)

Signing on for my sem-annual iPhone pre-order waiting party! Upgrading from a 13 Pro Max Sierra Blue to a 16 Pro Max Natural Titanium. Had no problems pre-ordering last night, on track for a Friday delivery, already preparing for shipment. 🎉
