Car's can't come with software that they've built for the car to be useful. Those TVs in the stores, gotta go back to being dumb screens. When people think of hardware as the product and not the combination of software and hardware, we get into debates like this. I hope this legislation gets a little attention passes on from the headlines and those that are pulling for it can say "we tried" and get back to fundraising.

i guess the iPhone will no longer work as a phone wthout Phone app.
Just means that the apps have to be separated out from the base OS. On first boot it would ask if you want Apple default apps or not. 99% of people will select Apple default.

Nice plan comrade, I don't even think that "banana republics" are like that. even Russia and China would not do that, they are into companies selling as much as they can....so they can pass money back and forth with the Oligarchs, who are multi billionaires. They are are not like Cuba was,
I’m not talking about the government. Apple could just say, “Ok, then we’ll track and only sell 45 million in the US” because they feel that providing “Calendar” on the device is important enough to do that.

Because this is legislation and not a court ruling, it will be challenged in court with a stay, and take years to resolve.

Apple would not be permitted to sell iPhones with its own apps installed under proposed U.S. antitrust legislation that was released last week. Representative David Cicilline confirmed the self-preferencing ban in a discussion with reporters, details of which were shared by Bloomberg.

Rather than pre-installed apps, Apple would have to offer other app options for consumers to download. Right now, iPhones come with a range of free Apple-designed apps from Messages and FaceTime to Calendar and Notes.

"It would be equally easy to download the other five apps as the Apple one so they're not using their market dominance to favor their own products and services," said Cicilline.

Preventing Apple from selling iPhones with its own apps installed would drastically change the iPhone's setup process, making it considerably less streamlined, more complicated, and potentially more expensive if customers were prompted to purchase or subscribe to third-party apps and services to replicate the functionality that Apple provides at no cost.

According to Cicilline, this would also apply to Amazon Prime because Amazon's ability to sell its own products over third-party products disadvantages some sellers.

U.S. House lawmakers last week debuted sweeping bipartisan antitrust legislation in the form of five different bills aimed at major tech companies like Apple, Amazon, Facebook, and Google. The bills would apply to businesses that have a market capitalization of $600 billion and at least 50 million monthly active users in the United States.

If passed, these bills would overhaul competition laws that have not been revisited for decades and would lead to significant changes in the tech industry. The House Judiciary Committee will review the five bills at a hearing next week.

Is there a way to show our support against this bill? Why would any smart person think this is a good thing? If someone wants to use a different app they just do it. Nothing is stopping them lol. Whoever is coming up with this legislation is not in touch with reality. I suppose I should expect anything different from a politician. They never ask for the public’s opinion.

This has to be the dumbest thing ever! Lets get a phone with absolutely nothing on it! iPhones are very popular with the older generation because of just how easy it is to navigate, I can teach my 88 year old grandpa how to facetime and use apps, do you think I can do that on Android? Removing apps and requiring people to install them will practically be a nightmare for anyone that is not tech savvy.

You're talking to the wrong person if you don't think I have an issue with how broadband providers are allowed to operate in this country. Of course we already have a way to deal with that and it's by making broadband a utility through Title II.

Amazon is being scrutinized just like the rest of the tech companies. And the behemoth that is Walmart has a whopping 9.5% of retain sales. Get back to me when they even break into the double digits..
That title II is not doing anything yet. the question is the infrastructure. When the carrier make their deals, they install all of their hardware/infrastructure. so, making them share on their wire should be interesting. Or do you make each town and city foot the bill for the infrastructure and then charge the carrier to use it. All of this tech is becoming a whole new challenge as we get more and more tach based. All of this could stifle progress and innovation at all levels, why should I invest crazy amounts of money in R&D when afterwards I will have to share it for free. I can't even begin to picture in the backend server side of iCloud and AWS.......how many hundreds of exabytes or even zettabytes they are supporting. At work we use AWS to store and edit from for our video content...we have 750TB and we are one client. MLB has over 11 petabytes and NFL has over 5 petabytes. Walmart is working on it, I see commercials for order online, delivered to you tomorrow

While they are at it, they should pass a bill that obliges car makers to not include seats, A/Cs, tires, wipers, etc. in their car so the end user can decide which accessory is best for their vehicle.

so in that vein, Windows will no longer have pre-installed apps, nothing, period. as will Linux, Android and EVERYONE else ...
sure, users will love that ...
Mark this guy's name and DO NOT vote for him next time around ...
We’re already getting there… Been on Mac for a decade now.

In my naivety I installed windows 10 home edition series edition edition for small homes (or whatever it’s called) on an old Mac for my 7 yo son.
His first computer so he could do a little simple gaming. Turns out they even removed solitaire and minesweeper! Now you have to download some add bloated version from the MS App Store. Jesus - what’s windows without solitaire?!?

Of course you want to call it silly, because you disagree with it. :) It doesn’t change the fact that a “market” for monopoly/duopoly/whatever can be whatever a person defines it as.

What’s actually silly is to call something a duopoly that’s not. What is the interdependence between Google and Apple?
1. Existence of only two sellers (Neither Google nor Apple sells an OS, and there are more than two hardware sellers, quite a number more)
2. Interdependence: if any firm makes the change in the price or promotional scheme, other firms also have to comply with it, to remain in the competition.[further explanation needed]
3. Presence of monopoly elements: so long as products are differentiated, the firms enjoy some monopoly power, as each product will have some loyal customers
4. There are two popular models of duopoly, i.e., Cournot's Model and Bertrand's Model.
It's not silly because I disagree with it. It's silly because you're the only person to have ever defined a market that way. The McDonald's/Burger King market exists only in your head and stretches the definition of what a market is to be utter nonsense. Let's discuss the liquor/potato chip market. It's a real thing because it's what I defined the market as..

What is the interdependence? Here's one example:

Apple changes their pricing structure and Google follows after. That was too easy.

You just admitted you have to teach your grandpa how to use a current iPhone, so having the apps preinstalled now isn't helping him now

Did you really just contradict yourself within two back to back sentences? If Apple charged $1 million for an iPhone they'd sell about 23 of them. That's why they don't do that. If Apple took 100% of developer revenue they wouldn't have an app store. That's why they don't do that. Just because Apple doesn't do things that are absurd on their face doesn't somehow mean that they aren't acting in an anti-competitive manner in certain instances.
No, I didn't contradict myself at all, but thank you for restating the same point I made: Apple doesn't have the power to dictate arbitrary rules.

Politicians are so dumb. All these anti-tech bills are dumb.
Right!! They talk about breaking companies up. We as consumers don’t care. It’s just other companies complain because they aren’t smart enough to make competing products. They simply just need to be better haha.

Microsoft was almost broken up because they installed IE on Windows PCs 25 years ago. What Apple, Microsoft, and Google have gotten away with the past 15 years or so is incredibly far beyond that.

This legislation makes total sense and I support it.

Monopolies are a bad thing folks.
You really think it makes sense? You must still be mad because they took away the headphone hole.
it's not apples fault that their competitors are horrible. so we have to suffer because other companies can't compete with apple.

Gee, the shareholders will not be happy with that. stock becomes a "sell"

Bloody Hell.

Why stop there, lets remove all the pre installed crud. When I walk in to buy a car it should come with no tires, no radio, no wiper blades, no oil filter or oil, etc, etc. Because damn it I want to be able to choose those things myself without the car manufacturer forcing their choices on me!

I'm not sure Timmy and Zuck are getting their monies worth. They really should have bought smarter politicians or found a better vendor.
