Im going to upgrade when theres a 16GB ram option for the airs. ::D

Agreed. It seems that 4GB is BARELY passable in Mountain Lion, and 8GB is the sweet spot; meaning anyone looking to keep their notebook for more than 2 years should probably be looking into 16GB.

... man, I remember when I had an 8GB hard drive.

Even my company bought iMacs to run Windows 7. That should tell you something.

I suspect Lenovo has done well because I always see super cheap deals for their stuff. I've even been tempted a couple times. I just don't use Windows enough to justify it.

If you think APPLE computers spec wise are the best computers ever made you must be high on that cannabis.

Did I say spec wise? No. I said best computers overall. That means design, durability, customer support, features, and software.

What company makes a computer that has a design as good as Apples?
What tech company has a customer support system as good as Apple Care?
What company makes a software up to par with OS X?

Windows 8? Chrome OS? Yeah, I don't think so...

Is there any other computer that has software for users like iTunes? Mac App Store? iCloud?

Other companies have tried to mimic Apple's software/services but have miserably failed.

I rest my case.

Apple has gone over ONE YEAR without an update to its 15" Retina Pro line, people aren't stupid, they have been waiting for months for a legit update. That pathetic .1 bump a couple months ago didn't fool anyone

Bright sunny days, Fresh air, Good Friends , the love of a good woman/man (your preference) ..... Dude your priorities are messed up !! The best things in life are FREE

This implies that having a girlfriend is cheap :p although I get your point.

Well what's your take on people who continue to spend ridiculous money on Gucci and LV bags and such? Those companies certainly stay in business and their products are definitely about perceived value.

Yo, that's $50 for a t-shirt.

Apple needs to add back the option to Upgrade/Replace components . Like Ram and the HDD/SDD back to its lines , thats the reason ill be going back to a PC for my new desktop at the end of the year,

And the iPad has removed the need for me to use a laptop at all
i don't understand your logic. Because Apple's laptops don't allow for upgrading RAM or storage, your going to go with a PC desktop. Huh?!??!?

This is what happens when you start making crappy hardware, cant swap batteries, cant change other parts not only on the laptops but on the desktops. The new mac pro is what it looks like to the pro market which is a trash can. Apple got to big for themselves and the fall as begun.

The decline of PC's don't have to do with anything you mentioned. Tablets & smart phones are the primary reason for the decline of PC's. Ironically they can't be upgraded very easily as well.

Then again... Android is outselling Apple in the Tablet Market and Crushing them in the Smartphone Market my opinion would sway more towards my original scenerio. It's tough to see 247% growth for Android, 700% growth for Windows and 65% growth for Apple knocking it down almost 20% in market share for the year.

Android does not sell smart phones or tablets, so there is no way they can outsell anyone.

Now if your talking about all the different manufactures that USE Android OS in their products, these manufactures still can't outsell them regardless.

Name me one tablet with Android OS that outsells the iPad.

i got a lenovo y580 instead, for half the price of the retina macbook ($1279) i got the following

Intel i7 3630
15.6" 1920x1080 with 97% color gamut
16GB Corsair vengeance (upgraded)
512GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD (one of the fastest ssds you can buy)
256GB Samsung mSATA (for OS)
Bluray burner (optional HDD bracket option for tripple SSDs)
nVidia GTX660M 2GB ram
Intel 6205 2x2 AGN (but this laptop allows me to upgrade to any wifi card i want, so once intel comes out with an AC card i can just upgrade it for not much more than $20, i dont have to buy a whole new laptop)

i just dont see the point of buying something twice the price with half the speed and half the connectivity.

Normally this argument doesn't fly on MacRumors, although I do have to agree with you.

If I were to get a PC, I'd definitely get a Lenovo. My girl friends father has an ThinkPad (about a year old) and that things a beast. Build quality is solid. Screen is amazing and has excellent specs.

I would argue that those other brands don't represent mass market products. Even if you view Apple as a premium company/standout, they're competing in what is essentially a commoditized market. Gucci and LV are luxury brands. They aren't about products that can be purchased by a wide market. They're priced high enough that few people will buy them. It's not really the same when comparing to a company that ships millions of devices within a specific class per quarter. Just a random factoid, but LV initially made high end luggage. Gucci makes boring/contrived stuff. There are many smaller labels with more creative designers.

How many oems still make several drastic updates per year? Sometimes they drop prices mid to late cycle if you buy online. Some like Dell fluctuate frequently. When you talk about a pathetic bump, it was just a revision B Ivy Bridge chip that had come out the prior fall. Haswell chips were not out at that time. Typically after chips come out you see something within a 3 month window.

It would probably be interesting to compare those growth numbers to some of Apple's earlier idevice quarters where the numbers were much smaller.

it really is personal preference. Some people value the retina display really highly. Other people don't really care to have 700+gb of ssd storage (actually does anybody need this much?). Do you want to have a store for support? Do you like good build quality? Do you like windows or mac osx?

it's never been about 1:1 comparison on computer parts when it comes to apple. never been, never will.

Wow, what a dramatization. First of all, i never knew android is outselling apple in the tablet market. They're not "crushing" Apple in the smartphone market and even less if you define smartphone to be like the g4 and htc one vs some ****** android derivative.

The ThinkPad (T Series) I'm referring to has 1920x1080 matte display that truly looks beautiful running Windows 7 on 15" screen. This particular ThinkPad is not running an SSD, but also costs only $899. With that said, I haven't felt a finer piece of machine in the PC market, it is truly built rock solid inside and out.

That is why I said, if I were to buy a PC, that is what I would get. The point being, I own all Macs and currently have no interest in buying Wintel machine as of now.

I'm not sure if your referring to the iPad/iPhone as millions of devices shipped within the quarter.

But realize we are talking PC sales, not really mobile devices.

I agree with HenryDJP as during our years long recession in the US, Mac sales have steadily rose ( Until very recently ) while PC sales have plummeted.

Edit: I just realized you could add a PC tablet such as Surface Pro to the mix. But to me its still a niche product that is not necessarily going to appeal to the mass market.

from other websites, it seems like this study does include tablet sales from windows

I was definitely thinking total macs, but for some reason I thought the numbers were a little higher than what is shown in the estimate. I was mainly suggesting that Apple doesn't follow a similar pricing model. By that I mean they are accessible to a much wider audience. The idevices extended that.

I also said somewhere that I think they expected an eventual decline in PC sales. I think it's one of those markets where some oems will eventually drop out.

I can name of manufacturer of smartphones that has more market share than Apple in the USA.

On a global scale Apple has been reduced to 18-21% depending who did the numbers.

Tablets are just following the natural progression of the numbers and that doesn't look good for Apple.

You do realize you are just proving my point that it doesn't take just one vendor to take Global Market Share.

Apple stands alone in a World of PC's that are Microsoft Windows domination.
Apple stands alone in a World of Mobile devices that are Android's domination.

It's just a matter of time until Apple is in the same lifeboat of the early days if they don't have anything better than what was introduced at WWDC this year.

Wish all you want, unless Apple either changes their strategy, which I don't believe Tim Cook will do they are in for the same slow decline as Blackberry or Nokia.

The common user can do the daily tasks on a tablet computer. The desktop or the heavy laptop have been overkill all the time.

again, depends on what you're looking at when you say smartphones. not only does apple stand alone against premiums martphones, they don't even have a cheap smartphone to compete with the drones of android phones out there, but does that matter?

i mean, did we see the slow decline of the mac to oblivion? I don't see that, they're the healthiest computer throughout the recession and used by college kids and nerds everywhere.
