Apple is getting more criticism for this than it did for iOS 7 automatically downloading itself which consisted of consuming multiple GB on older Apple devices who's owners did not want to update due to the fact that iOS 7 slowed their devices down, and in that instance you couldn't delete the download.

Why?

Someway gave me free DIGiTAL music. World ending. Oh no!

Why is everyone saying that, "world ending"???? No one cried sky is falling but those who keep saying it's such a big deal. If you don't think it is a big deal why do you keep saying it's the "world ending" event?

Love you all!

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but this wasn't "auto-downloaded". It was simply made available in our libraries as if we had bought it. The content itself wasn't physically loaded onto our devices until we clicked (tapped) the download button. I don't get why folks were all bent out of shape over this.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a U2 fan. I took the steps to have it removed, just as a lot of you did, I bet.

Correct. Just like ALL the music one dislikes that is there for them on a subscription service. Nobody had to address it, acknowledge it or download it. But their lack of understanding made them look pretty silly. Boo hoo.

I went to Torhout/Werchter in 1982, to see U2. It felt like a pilgrimage, in a way.

'A Day Without Me' was the soundtrack to one of my big love affairs.

I deleted 'songs of innocence' without hearing more than the ****ed up fragments that survived the live stream disaster. And I'm not planning on hearing more.

Having 'songs of innocence' shoved down my throat without any choice whatsoever was just plain wrong. A seriously bad move that destroyed a 35 year friendship.

Don't get me wrong, 35 years ago I was a HUGE U2 fan. I gave up a job, bought a van, made it into a camper and hiked to another country with five friends to see 1 hour, 55 minutes of U2.

I have a large collection of vinyl, tapes, regular releases and bootlegs and homemade illegal recordings. Also included: t-shirts, other clothing, some strange U2-related nicknacks.

It's all leaving in a few days, when the payment from some fool comes through.

I can't even...

I want everyone to sing.

Naw, I don't sing. You wouldn't want me to, anyway.

You're taking what I said out of context, and mocking me all the while. Bravo. I'm going to go have a cry now. You hurt my pride and sense of self-righteousness. <cough>

I encourage everyone to sing all of the time. I don't care how bad you think it might be, singing is good for human beings as it is very good.

I LOVE You all!

What something is worth is completely relative.

Oh god. Apple gives us a gift. We're all going to die. OH NO. It was a nice gift and if you don't want it, and you had auto download on, delete it. End of story, who cares and you can move on.

If only people put this sort of mental energy into things more important in the world.

I don't think its really U2's fault. Apple should have said "Your out of your damn mind." And made it a free download through iTunes. Not an automatic download.

In many cases (if you don't turn on the automatic download option which is by default is OFF), you shouldn't be able to see it at all in your iDevice. My friend doesn't even aware there is a free album. As for my case, I had to go to iTunes Store to download it for free.

Just stop with the overrated whines already ;)

Even though its nice to have something free now and than. I see this as a new definition of music bloatware in iTunes, given its unwanted by user. Anyways I deleted and hide mine as i do not like U2.

Do you consider the NSA and what they're doing to be a First World Problem as well?
Honestly I hadn't connected the U2 album with NSA. I don't take lightly how someone feels about †he NSA issue.

What I'm going t say next will sound sarcastic but I don't mean it that way: In the job I have now I'm a lot more worried about the fact that I have a coworker who can see all of our medical records, email, every mouse click we make, etc. It's a fact as she's got access to all this data because the insurance data comes through our business and she's acting as network administrator and is related to the owner. I like it better when someone I don't know can see my data rather than a coworker who gossips as she does. Also a first world problem I guess...

Then you know what? MOVE TO ANDROID OR WIN PHONE OR FIREFOXOS WHERE YOU WON'T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT A GIFT/ABUSE!

Seriously dude? your 11th post since 2012 is screaming about this... without even providing a single intelligent argument? just "move to android"... that's it?

Sad. Funny, but sad.

Cheers!

On top of this, there are plenty of far worse decisions/moves that Apple have made of late. EG disabling iPhoto in iOS 8 without a proper replacement and for no bloody reason, releasing iOS 8 riddled with bugs etc etc.

A forced free U2 album today.

A forced third-party app or two tomorrow.

When and where will you draw the line?

You say "forced free U2 album," I say "a well-intentioned gift". If I were given the gift of a free third-party app that I wasn't interested in, I wouldn't be worried. I don't have auto-download turned on. Why? Because I don't like things I don't want being forced upon me. I'm willing to give up a little bit of convenience for that level of control.

Example: I still have an old version of Google Drive installed on my iPhone. When Google released Docs and Sheets as stand-alone apps, they removed the functionality to edit those types of files from within the Google Drive app. The funny thing is, I don't really use any of it with any regularity. It just rubbed me the wrong way, so I didn't update. TAKE THAT, GOOGLE! Yeah, I'm sure they're worried.

Apple, despite having great taste in design and aesthetics and stuff, has always had ****** taste in music

Remember when he was saying like, "I wasn't really friends with George Bush" even though he totally was.

Cheers! - Seriously dude? You're crying about 'abuse of your account' - Where's your intelligence? If this is the worst thing to happen to you, then you need some new priorities, seriously dude. On behalf of Apple, I'm sorry they abused you, and your account, and touched it inappropriately. If you read my other posts, they had intelligent argument. Your post, didn't. It just talked about your account being 'abused'.

More so screaming about it because you have no valid argument. A company gives you a gift, and you accuse them of abusing you/your account/whatever. Do you not see how ridiculous your post is? Perhaps you're the sad one when you have nothing better to complain about. But hey, that's just my unintelligent opinion.

I think the whole promotion was brilliant. For better know bands, this could be the start of a new way to release albums. Get a company like Apple or Amazon to pay a band several million, then give the album away for a limited time to all users. I hope others give it a try.

Your premise is great, but that's not what they did.

They didn't give it to anyone who wanted it, they forced you to add it to your library (it was more of a break into your library and put it on the shelf).

Many people don't want music that isn't their's mixed in with their music. That's why the buy music, to listen to what they want when they want to.

They could have sent everyone promo codes or just made it free for the week. Word would have gotten around...

Apple really took advantage of their customers in a bad way and it was a very poor judgement call on Apple's part. They really get what they deserve here and I do not feel sorry for them at all with all of the complaints.

If I wanted music and other things shoved down my throat, why not just revert to pre-2007-iPhone days when the carriers did the same thing.

Shame on Apple.

Do people really not realize that the album auto-downloaded because their setting for auto-downloading was enabled? That they could have changed this? Wow.

I think some of you guys are missing the point. In the age of Snowden, the NSA, privacy violations everywhere.. people are very sensitive about their freedoms.

The move to auto download the music upset so many people not because they didn't want the album, but because it was placed on their personal, private devices without their permission. The iPhone has become very important to many people because it's a major way that we communicate and interact with our world and with each other. It's with us all the time and to do things on it without our permission feels like a violation. If you make us feel like our phones aren't in our control but instead can be forced to perform tasks by signals from a distant corporation, that's scary.

I'm sorry, but even if it's free, you still need to ask.
