You people just need to relax. It was a free album. if you didn't like it, just don't listen to it. It was U2, not some simpleton artist who sings "b**ch got a p**is" or something equally mindnumbingly idiotic.

People act more offended by something dumb like this than they do about anything important, like the way our country is being led. A free album that I didn't want....oh the humanity!!!! Protest in the streets! Occupy Cupertino!

Just because something is free doesn't mean it is good or that people automatically want it.

I don't listen this kind of music, so I could care less.

Apple could also have given every iTunes user a $10 gift card or a free album download of choice.

I prefer your idea. :)

Apple never gets me musically, so I removed the U2 from my library.

Congratulations, America. You've forced an apology from someone who gave you something for FREE.

Bono didn't give us anything for free. Apple paid U2 100 million dollars. It's not like this was a charity event. It's poor marketing from Apple to gain exclusive iTunes access for a new U2 album....

And it IS annoying to hear U2 come on my shuffled music.

The whining douchebags didn't deserve an apology.

I liked the album and appreciated it so thanks bono and company. it's actually my first U2 album but it won't be the last.

Remember when he was saying like, "I wasn't really friends with George Bush" even though he totally was.

Bono Culpa should be his name. If I recall correctly Bono Culpa took a high profile trip with Paul O'Neill, The know nothing Secretary of Treasury in the Bush Administration (before Paul got canned.)

Obama's America.

I want deserve a gift card of $100 paid out of those billions that Apple has to make me feel better.

May I suggest, Joshua Tree or Rattle and Hum? Both are listen to albums, from first to last track.

But then again, I have fond memories of that time in my life, and that music was part of it.

I do understand it, but I also understand intent. It is just an album. Not a virus, not spyware, or what have you.
It was meant as a gift. I get the concerns, but I also realize that the issue is over. Apple heard the critics. I doubt something like this will happen again.

Pullfocus, I think spectrumfox failed to understand your post here. Also failed to understand the meaning of intent.

Apple's intention was benign (no malice intended), at the worst it was nothing but a marketing gimmick to make them look like a magnanimous or generous company that was giving away a freebie. Did it backfire and did some people take it the wrong way? It seems like it.

But it's waaaaaaaay a stretch to say that what Apple did (and Apple's intentions) were on par with the malicious and now well-known strategically intended actions of the NSA to intentionally spy on and intrude on the privacy rights of American citizens.

The worst I can say about what Apple did? The intention was harmless, the execution was not well thought-out, and to many people it seemed like a boneheaded gimmick. Was it on par with the Evil Liberty-Crushing Malice of the NSA? Well, a conspiracy theorist might say so.

He should apologize for helping spread poison GMOs around the world.
Bono the monsanto lapdog. No wonder he likes Obama so much

OK then, what if you live in a country where you don't have unlimited data?

I see a big problem. They didn't have to push it. I see something far more sinister at play here. Modern music charts are based upon downloads. When you have an album that has effectively been purchased by every single Apple customer in the world, then you cheat the music charts.

It's utterly disgusting behaviour from Apple and utterly disgusting behaviour by U2. I'm not surprised in the lack of morality or ethics by U2, but I'm totally shocked by the utter lack from Apple. They really are becoming an evil company.

They didn't cheat the charts. Billboard won't count free album downloads towards a band's sale total.

That's an excellent point.

People are constantly complaining about the amount of spam they get in their email. But according to lots of people in these forums, people should be thankful for the spam they receive in their Inboxes and shouldn't be looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Most people who are concerned about spam, have configured their email to filter it and prevent delivery of said spam. Just as those who are concerned about automatic delivery of apple content could have configured their systems to prevent automatic delivery.

The difference? People have to manually configure their systems to block spam. While the whiners out there manually configured their systems to enable automatically receiving the content that they're complaining about.

In other words, unlike spam, if they had left the default settings in place, they would have never received the content that apparently caused them to have something to complain about. Of course, if they had left the default settings in place, they'd still be unhappy, because they have a inherent need for something to complain about.

Cheers! - Seriously dude? You're crying about 'abuse of your account' - Where's your intelligence? If this is the worst thing to happen to you, then you need some new priorities, seriously dude. On behalf of Apple, I'm sorry they abused you, and your account, and touched it inappropriately. If you read my other posts, they had intelligent argument. Your post, didn't. It just talked about your account being 'abused'.

More so screaming about it because you have no valid argument. A company gives you a gift, and you accuse them of abusing you/your account/whatever. Do you not see how ridiculous your post is? Perhaps you're the sad one when you have nothing better to complain about. But hey, that's just my unintelligent opinion.

DUDE! are you serious???

First off, who's crying? And who said this is the worst thing to happen to me? seems to me you are getting way too emotional about this. Chill.

Secondly...

On behalf of Apple

The angle you are giving to my comments about Apple abusing my trust by putting this lame album in my account - this talk about "inappropriately touching my account", giving it a sexual connotation, is way out of line, and should get you banned. Or at least reported.

Finally, just to explain (once again) something that any mildly intelligent person should get: I didn't ask for a crappy gift from Apple. Apple and I aren't friends. I pay them to give me a service, and I expect them to respect this by not putting music in my library without me asking. That's it.

I'm not interested in receiving handouts or crappy gifts from any company. Personally I'd rather pay for what I want, so I can demand a certain level of service (but perhaps your situation is different).

In any case, I ask you: Is it a gift if someone leaves a box of unwanted crap in your garage (imagine you have one) and leave you to deal with it? (Answer: no, it's not).

But yes, at least we agree on one thing: all you wrote is just your unintelligent opinion.

Cheers.

Although the album showed up in your iTunes Purchased list, it wasn't downloaded automatically to your device, you had to intentionally download it for it to "waste" memory on your Apple product. You didn't have to give someone your email or get spam or get contacted in anyway for you to receive it, since you had already signed up for an iTunes account. And it cost you zero dollars. And whether you would like them or not, U2 is still a popular band. Tell you guys what, go to any music web site, list your favorite band, and see what the reaction is amongst all the very brave anonymous people. They'll react just like you are reacting here, telling you that you have poor taste in music and asking how can you like such a crappy band. Or you could just delete it and quit turning ant hills into mountains.

I haven't downloaded or listened to to it yet, and as far as I know I haven't heard any of the songs on the radio. I'll listen to it eventually, and if I like it I'll keep it and if I don't I won't.

They had to because no one would have downloaded it and then the person who paid them 100 million would have looked like an idiot. I certainly didn't download it and it showed up on my device. I am guessing because I have autodownloads on.

I went to Torhout/Werchter in 1982, to see U2. It felt like a pilgrimage, in a way.

'A Day Without Me' was the soundtrack to one of my big love affairs.

I deleted 'songs of innocence' without hearing more than the ****ed up fragments that survived the live stream disaster. And I'm not planning on hearing more.

Having 'songs of innocence' shoved down my throat without any choice whatsoever was just plain wrong. A seriously bad move that destroyed a 35 year friendship.

Wow. Those Irish popstars messed with the wrong guy's iTunes collection this time. No mercy.

noise? those u2 songs are the NOISE we hear in grocery stores. that's what this music is produced for and actually sold to.
