I haven't been able to download it. It says "Purchased" but there's no download button or anything. And it's not in my iTunes list.

Same here, I like U2 but I can't download it, my wife does not like them and it appeared on her phone automatically.

Apple, please spend more of your mountain of cash and keep sending me free music. I don't care about these other jokesters here. My 11,000 song personal library could use some beefing up. My goal is to add another zero in my lifetime. I love music and it is in my DNA too.

Bring me more! Make it some Cuban Salsa next time!

It's a phenomenal album. I highly encourage anyone who considers themself a music lover to listen to this record. It's free and entirely in the cloud, so what do you have to lose?

I downloaded it but haven't listened to it because I lost interest in them after Zooropa. But, it's still U2 ,the band that I saw live on a rainy cold night at Red Rocks long ago.

I bought the Complete U2 when it was available on the Apple store. Several of the more recent CDs, I've never listened to more than once.

Thankfully I had auto-downloads turned off - and you can still hide unwanted purchases through iTunes (although not on iDevices annoyingly).

U2 didn’t do anything innovative since 1998, and became the epitome of dad rock. The music that is (stereotypically) associated with the blokes within the age range of Tim Cook, Eddy Cue, Craig Federighi, Phil Schiller, etc. :p

When you go to purchases, look under the recent purchases tab. Tap on any song on the CD and then you will see the download all button.

Well, having over a hundred megs of content you don't necessarily want download automatically could be an issue for people, particularly those with limited data plans. For a special case like this they probably should have figured out a way to have it be an exception to the automatic download and just make it visible as available for download.

Maybe people that have limited data plans shouldn't have automatic downloads turned on...

I know it was free, so take this with a grain of salt, but Taylor Swift's Red album sold 1.21 million copies in the first week, which was the most since Eminem's 2002 album "The Eminem Show." The U2 album has only been out for 3 days.

but those were only US numbers right? this one is world wide

Ummm...time? What do you got to lose by reading/watching all the spam you get in your inbox?

Doesn't really matter, does it? U2 doesn't get any more or less money for the deal. Less just means that Apple has less bandwidth to pay for. But I agree that it's probably not worth boasting about when looking at the ratio of downloads to active accounts.

just saying, half a billion accounts and only 2 million of that managed to download the album automatically?

The marketing campaign has clearly worked. It has made everyone who hates it either look up why it's there and/or complain about it.

It means that you are forced to think about Apple longer by spending time complaining about it, or being satisfied that you are getting something for free from Apple.

:apple: = Win

$100m deal / 2m downloads = $50 per album. Thats even more expensive than iTunes! LOL

Everyone that gets the iPhone 6 will get it as well (won't they?) so throw in a few extra million copies.

Apple must have changed how it works.

The album is not showing up on my phone at all. It's in my purchase history but not in my library, and I have non-downloaded songs visible.

I would be pissed off if it was there. This is worse than spam, at least with spam I don't have to do a google search to figure out how to remove it.

I got text messages from friends who couldn't figure out how to remove it. I don't know anybody who likes U2. You couldn't pay me to listen to it.

The only mistake they made was adding it to everyones purchases, they should've just have it freely available to "purchase" on the store.

And shut up already people, we get it you don't like U2 but do you really have to be such gigantic mother freaking douchebags?

you're more whiny and annoying than android users.

"i don't like something there for it sucks hurrr durr"

If it was given free to everyone with an apple id then 2 million is pretty poor and a good indication of how irrelevant U2 is.

As I've said in another thread, I find it a bit silly how outraged some people have been over this, though I think it's a fair point in itself to say you'd rather have it be free to 'purchase' rather than automatically added to your purchased list in your iTunes library/account.

-plug- I would never want to force music upon people that don't want it, but where does it end? I mean, for example, if I point out that I have a link in my sig to numerous free*, downloadable instrumental tunes I created and uploaded to my SoundCloud account :p is that worse that merely having the link there? (Sorry if so!). -plug-

So I guess I'd feel a little hypocritical if I was criticising Apple and U2 for offering a free album in a way that really doesn't cause a whole lot more hassle for me than reading my own signature. Or is it that it's U2 specifically and some people dislike them for various reasons?

*CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 licence at that.

Streaming from the cloud does not count as a download. Many people these days keep their music in the cloud.

I subscribe to iTunes Match but still have everything downloaded to my iPad and computer.

Thank you. But why was it this hard?

I have no idea why they made it like this. I kept going to the album page in iTunes and it showed as purchased but no way to download it. That night, I finally figured it out that the only way to download it was to go to recent purchases and click on one of the songs.

Once I downloaded it the first time, iTunes Match showed it in my library on my phone with the download arrow for every song. It didn't show up till I actually downloaded it the first time on my iPad.

Ah ah users complaining about free album... Only on Mac Rumors

Yeah it's free but…

it is boring and irrelevant.

Apple got how many more credit cards on file with iTunes? Worth their cost. U2? Got to still believe their music is relevant when it is not.Not for years.

Why not?

Normally people buy something and they want to download it. Before this was there ever an instance where people would end up downloading something they didn't ask for?

If your biggest problems are...

Good thing nobody said this was their biggest problem. So I guess you have never complained about anything unless it was the single biggest problem in your life?

It's not a huge deal, but Apple would have given a much better impression of having their act together if they had been able to make the "cloud" version show up in everyone's iTunes so that the people that wanted it could download it. Instead, some had it download automatically and others didn't have it show up at all and had to hunt for it. I'm sure millions of iTunes users aren't even aware the album is available, if Apple had it working that two million number would be that much higher.

That was the same for me -- on my Mac. But my iPhone showed the iCloud download button. When I pressed it, the album was available on all my devices. Curiously though, the album's digital songbook won't download. On my Mac, it says it's purchased. But on my iPhone, it just says "album only" and there's no way to download it.
