Which Model are you getting?

I think you'll be fine for 16GB RAM, however 512GB may be cutting it a tad short. Coming from a 2017 MBP that has 128GB, I went for the maxed out version of the M1 Pro and realised it came with 1TB SSD. And with Unidays, managed to get it for £2138.
I hear you. I suppose breaking £2000 is a psychological barrier for me although as a business purchase and possibly trading in my 2013 MacBook for £170 I can bring the price back down again. 128GB SSD in 2013 seemed a lot but soon proved otherwise so going for 1TB now makes sense as I can see me keeping the new laptop for some considerable time. Thanks for your thoughts. Enjoy your new toy!! ?

Well! I've literally unboxed it and started to get it set up. I'll give some immediate first impressions, compared to my Late 2016 MBP, having owned every generation going back to the 2002 Aluminium models.

  • It is not as thick or chunky as I expected given the pictures but bear in mind I'm going from a 15" to a 14"
  • It feels very solid, probably even more solid than my old one.
  • The keyboard has a lot of travel (good). On par with the desktop Magic Keyboard and leagues ahead of the original butterfly keyboard from my 2016 model.
  • Everything feels snappier. Not just because it's obviously a fresh installation of the OS as I'd recently done the same on my old laptop. I'm very sensitive to input lag and was definitely starting to notice it. It's almost gone on the new one.
  • That video that was posted last night showing text in the Terminal app (white on black) trailing when the window is moved is an absolute non-issue. It's barely noticeable.
  • There is a tiny bit of bloom around bright objects on black backgrounds but, again, I wouldn't have even noticed it if the Internet hadn't pointed it out. At my age, my own eyes do worse things than that.
  • The Space Colour is, to my eye, exactly the same as the 2016 and presumably later models.
  • Promotion is quite subtle but very nice. I haven't noticed it everywhere but just occasionally I find something that's buttery smooth. Much smoother than it was before.
  • What notch?
That's about all for now.

I placed the order on event day, delivery window Nov 17 - Nov 24. It is a BTO just because I'm in Spain and I wanted US layout. My order is still processing.

I was just one click away to pick up one today with Spanish layout but I know I would regret that the following years ?

Is there somebody with similar delivery dates on status "preparing to ship" already? I am still hopeful to get it before estimated date.
My BTO is 9th-12th and still stuck on processing. I could really do with it sooner, so busy that week.

DPD have let me down the absolute idiots. The guy didn’t even bother turning up to my address and posted the completely wrong building on the app saying he couldn’t make it. Called them up and he said he can still come but from 3-4pm so hopefully he can.

Couldn’t wait that long?. I have now picked up the base model 14 inch in store with the included 67W power adapter. I’m not too fussed with fast charging at the moment. And I have now cancelled my other order
Don’t blame you. I would have done the same but I managed to get launch day delivery. Enjoy!

Mines here, really want to get the migration started but i need to be working - does anyone know if i use the migration assistant can i still work on my old macbook at the same time? Or does it knock both offline?

Same here...

I have two orders, one I made almost immediately after going live, direct from Apple, for a 14 M1Max and the other I made a few days later on Amazon for the 16’ version. I was getting concerned about going 14’ and thought I should check out the 16. The weird thing is that Amazon have sent me an email saying my order will arrive on the 28th with the day 1 order at apple not here until 29th. Yes, it’s going through Shanghai, etc. The problem is I want to cancel the 14 before it arrives, is that even possible? Otherwise I will just check them both out together, but already feel that I am settled on 16“ as it will primarily be used at home.

How long after launch day are some of these MBPs likely to appear in the refurbished section on the Apple website? I'm guessing not until around March time next year but wondering if likely after Christmas?

Well...went to Apple to pick up the 14" Pro with 1tb of memory and left with the 14" Max 64gb ram 2TB model....

Basically a 1600 difference with the education discount.
How…

I'm such a nightmare. Got the space grey, now wish I'd bought silver instead. Gonna feel a right tit going back to the store later to swap.

I don't even think the 16" is as heavy or chunky as some of the reviews have made out - its been a while since I've used a 16", but it feels ok to me.

Well, the new laptop is rather spectacular. I haven't had a MacBook for a few years and I am just amazed by how quiet and speedy this thing is. Keyboard is ace and I actually really like the footprint and weight of the 14" model.

Now posting from my 16" M1 Max 32GPU/32GB/1TB Space Grey.

Pick-up from Apple store in Bristol completely painless. Set-up going smoothly so far. I decided to go for a fresh install rather than use Migration Assistant, partly because I realise I've been using MA since my 2009 iMac! So time for a a bit of discretion about which apps and files I bring onto this lovely machine.

I installed Monterey on my M1 mini last night, so the OS version is not a complete surprise. I haven't tried pushing it yet, but I can say it is totally silent at "rest" (driving a 4k external display in retina 5k, but I guess that counts as rest for this thing).

Deeply impressed by the way it looks. The underside is almost industrial. Display is gorgeous.

How did they get the speakers sounding so good? (Razer Blade can hang its head in shame in this department...)
