Logged in and setting up. Wow the keyboard is night and day better compared to my old butterfly one. Only thing I've noticed is that I got the British key layout, and I've used the US layout for the last 10 years, so I'm going to keep missing the Enter key!

Now posting from my 16" M1 Max 32GPU/32GB/1TB Space Grey.

Pick-up from Apple store in Bristol completely painless. Set-up going smoothly so far. I decided to go for a fresh install rather than use Migration Assistant, partly because I realise I've been using MA since my 2009 iMac! So time for a a bit of discretion about which apps and files I bring onto this lovely machine.

I installed Monterey on my M1 mini last night, so the OS version is not a complete surprise. I haven't tried pushing it yet, but I can say it is totally silent at "rest" (driving a 4k external display in retina 5k, but I guess that counts as rest for this thing).

Deeply impressed by the way it looks. The underside is almost industrial. Display is gorgeous.

How did they get the speakers sounding so good? (Razer Blade can hang its head in shame in this department...)

Yep. The speakers are ridiculously good even on the 14" model!

Can someone with a 14” model post some pics of the screen on full brightness, just surfing this site for example ? Followed by say a YouTube hdr video again on full brightness? I just want to hear of /see the opinion on the screen. Superior to the old model obviously but brighter? Far more detail?

I do think they look much better in the flesh - I really wasn't a fan of the designs when I first saw them. There's very much a light & dark theme going on with these new models although I'm never sure how much of that is down to the Apple Store lighting!

The notch is a total non-event as its in the menu bar, although I do like to imagine there's something secret hiding up there... of course they hide it in screenshots, that's all part of the conspiracy.

I've not used my HomePod all morning - I've just been using the internal speakers for Music as well as video calls.

The battery just seems to keep going and going - after a lifetime of Intel Macs, there's still something very strange about doing initial setup without the fans going mad.

Initial impressions are very good - main reason I went for the 16" model is because I want something I can work-from all day long without an external monitor and so far I think it will let me do just that.

The 2020M1 MBA is in target disk mode, so not a great comparison.

Well the speakers on these things are much, much improved. They're still no match for even a HomePod mini and the bass isn't exactly earth-shuddering but it's leagues ahead of my old MBP.

And the screen on this thing - wow. I'm not much of a pixel peeper but, to eye, the blacks look as black as my LG OLED and the whites seem much brighter. I've just been watching that Costa Rica 4k@60 HDR video on YouTube. Probably the best picture I've seen on any screen ever.

I forgot how nice it is to have USB-C ports that actually hold the connector. I'm not used to them not just falling out with the slightest movement. A common issue on the 2016 model.

My i5 model spins up if you move the mouse too fast!

Not heard a peep out of mine. Xcode installation with an rsync of 250K files, one drive, Dropbox, iCloud, photos, music all syncing up over a 300Mbps internet link. Silent.

Same. Copied across 250GB of data. Installed Logic and all the sound packs. Installed FCPX and watched an unrendered video for 20 mins (albeit with not a lot of effects or colour correction). Installed Photoshop and Lightroom. Fan hasn't spun up once.

So apple have said 500 nits in sdr mode which I assume Safari is in but it looks bright than the iPhone 13 pro which is 1000 nits typical.

My DHL tracking code still hasn't updated (Still shows only "Shipment picked up") and now the Apple Order Status just shows "Arriving Soon".... Have spoken to Apple, and they are still adamant it's going to arrive between the 29th and 2nd though...
