I'm now into my delivery window but it's still stuck on Processing.
Might cry if it doesn't move to PTS today as that's two days I could have nipped to Stratford and picked one up.

Will see how it goes today and then decide!

The biggest headache is that I used £700 of apple store vouchers towards the BTO and if I got pick up in store I’ll not be able to use them again right now. Also, if I then return my BTO I’ll end up back with the vouchers
I have no major technical knowledge to back this up however I think for my sanity I’d stick with the BTO if it has 32GB ram

Loving the SPEED of it so far, the screen is FANTASTIC that promotion is just.. wow.

One point though - anyone else's webcam doing that skin smoothing thing we saw in the iPhones a few iterations ago? It's making me look quite... "pretty"

It looks like whatever happened last night has been fixed? Its still saying Friday Delivery although its still in Shanghai from what I can make out from the the last couple of updates which is very concerning.

Shanghai to the UK in 2 days?

I think you may be right. I had two updates overnight, the second states - 27/10/2021 9:44 - "On the Way - A mechanical failure has caused a delay. We will update the delivery date as soon as possible. / Your parcel is on the way" there is no location thou.

the message before was stamped as Shanghai, China - 27/10/20218:46 - "A mechanical failure has caused a delay. We will update the delivery date as soon as possible."

My earlier post on this is stuck waiting for moderation, but I suspect UPS flight 5X11 is the problem, it looks like its planned flight from Seoul to Cologne was canceled

I don’t know what he uses the machine for, but I highly doubt he would ever even use up those 16GB in the first place, not even a few years time. People are too obsessed with having extra RAM…

My last Mac was 32gb but didn’t really pay attention to how much I was consuming. Never had memory issues. Running multiple docker containers, ide, vms, dev tools and lots of browser tabs will be the majority of it. Could probably fit in the 16gb.

Going to see how it goes till Saturday. Going to be near the apple store then and if there’s still no sign of the bto turning up, I might pick me up if still available.

Did get the apple invoice come through 1am or so today but still no charge on card.

Also, I've just realised I'll miss the Touch Bar for screenshots. Although I won't miss accidentally activating Siri 3 times per day.

Though looking at this there wasn’t a flight last Wednesday either. Maybe it will be on the move tonight (Thursday am in china)

So in the ideal situation it leaves Shanghai tomorrow morning arriving at incheon midday local time.

Then it leaves for cologne 2pm local and gets to Germany for 7pm local.

From there it moves to UK during that night into the local distribution centres and then out to us Friday.

What could go wrong

Valid point, however even I’m Questioning it after seeing mine look like it’s running low on the earlier photos.

However that may be misinterpreting it as I’m not hugely clued up

If I get to Saturday I might fold. I can wait for the max beast a couple days longer! I’ll just have to use the vouchers for the phone/watch next year lol

I think it's already in Incheon and it missed its leg to Germany - I doubt they have unconsolidated the flight pallet to scan each box hence no location scan yet.

Can someone reassure me here

I thought I’d open a few safari tabs and load a photo into Affinity Photo, also have the photos app open and App Store

Should it be using this much RAM? Does this bode well for the future?

I’m not massively clued up on it but I want to make sure I’ve got a machine to last me several years
The thing to pay attention to is 'wired' memory. That's memory that apps are actively using.

I'm going to oversimplify a bit, but what macOS does is bring into memory a ton of stuff that apps _might_ need or leave in memory things that they needed and might need again. It's all part of trying to squeeze out the best possible performance. So the more memory you have the more casual macOS is going to be about putting things in there 'just in case'.

A simplified example of this is if an app starts reading from a file. One approach macOS could take with limited RAM is to just read from the file the bits as the app needs it. If macOS has a ton of free memory, why not just put the whole file in memory in one go?

When memory starts getting tight, macOS will streamline things and start purging out all these speculative bits of data. Wired are the bits the app has specifically written ('dirty') or is explicitly needing. When wired memory exceeds total memory, macOS will be forced to 'page' (move) these bits of memory to disk. That's super slow and horrific for performance.

Again, totally simplified things here but it might give you a better mental model to not worry when you see a lot of memory in use.

If all can happen in 48 hours we could of had our MacBooks today if they had left Shanghai on Monday lol.

Maybe ups only has 1 or 2 flights a week that leads into Europe and into the uk.

Still processing for me. Oh the pain ☹️

I share your pain. I even called Sainsburys to make a note on the account to accept the charge. The response was not particularly reassuring, just 'yeah should go through, might take a couple of days to show'.
