So, this is definitely not a final judgement (for one thing I have to wait for Spotlight/Photos indexing to finish to give it a proper run) but…

As it stands I’m leaning towards sending it back.

My workflow involves having a frankly obscene number of tabs across 4 different browsers open, along with some combination of Slack, Zoom and Teams calls while driving a 5K2K ultrawide and my M1 Air (8GB) definitely struggles at times, particularly when it comes to memory. Outside of work, there’s my one addiction, Football Manager (I KNOW there’s at least a couple of you who loaded that up quick smart when you got your new machine, don’t lie!!)

Now this is in no way a “these new MBP’s suck!” post. They don’t. It’s an awesome machine in so many ways. I put an HDR movie on before and I was blown away. ProMotion is amazing. The machine feels fast. Love MagSafe. I even kinda like the notch! 😂

I definitely need to try it in a work setting, which I’ll do next week. This is honestly more a comment on how amazing the Air is. If I were to return the MBP I’d most likely sell my Air and replace with a 16GB model, as honestly it would solve most of my issues. Though I’ll definitely miss FM on “Very High” 😂😂😂

Apologies for the string of consciousness!!

Argh!!!

My delivery window was between today and the 2nd November, status had been “shipped” for a few days, but had not heard anything more than “delivery between 29/10 and 02/11”.

I got in touch with Apple support this morning and was assured that I would get a notification “the moment it leaves the warehouse”.

Not having heard anything this morning I went out for the day. Only to get an SMS from DHL saying that they could not deliver my parcel from Apple.

I have rebooked delivery for Monday, but there is still no update to the order status on Apple Store.

Aha that's harsh!

Finally got a tracking update saying mine is sorted at East Midlands at 23:06 tonight.

Had to check the dhl site, didn’t get any notifications despite signing up for them.

FWIW, I've never had a computer that can run the 3D FM match engine this smoothly on my LG 5K display as this 14" - it used to bring my 2016 MBP to its knees!

I am sure I am wrong but that sounds like the ultimate procrastination workflow. 😂 You’d are definitely not the target audience of this macs and you’d be way better off waiting for the next Airs. They’d make you much happier

Haha. Alas it’s a Salesforce development workflow. 😂

Waiting for the next Air isn’t a bad shout except I really don’t want one that’s in the current iMac aesthetic 😫

This is the exact machine I have ordered and I'm in the same position as you with waiting for it to be delivered so...small victories.

Would love for UPS to deliver over the weekend but that doesn't seem possible. Just have to wait those 2 days.
I’d urge caution. The Pro is an amazing chip - no two ways about it. So is the M1. I do believe, however, that the potential applications for a 32 core GPU with up to 64GB of memory are plentiful. Not just games or video rendering, but anything which can be offloaded.

I’m expecting to see a lot of programmes start taking advantage of the GPU which haven’t done so to this point. The Max may be overkill today but might well come to be something you’ll be glad you invested in.

These psychos at UPS got my laptop from Seoul to EMA in 16 hours then took another 24 hours to move it to … Tamworth. Wtf.
Same, finally got an update!! Still showing Monday though, assuming they don’t do deliveries over the weekend (why not?)

I can’t speak for DHL/UPS but I do work for a well known courier… For us the answer is simple. We struggle to get staff who are willing to work at weekends. We do some Saturday deliveries but not a full service.

It’s not just couriers. It’s the service centre staff, admin, HGV drivers, the lot. Many of them are unionised and we’ve had discussions with the unions and it’s been a pretty flat “no.”

Sure, they’d do it for more money but the profit margins per-parcel are only pennies as it is.
