How is it behind? As far as I know, it has some of the best hardware in the mobile market.
Screen? Best out there.
Processor? 1 GHz is the standard. I have yet to see something higher.
Camera? Anything above 5 MP is a complete waste without a larger/better sensor.
Video Recording? 720p HD is freaking awesome on the phone. Only a few other top tier devices have it.
Battery? Can't be trumped.
Storage? It's a little behind, but not by much. You can fit 40GB into a Droid X, so 32GB isn't far behind.
Anywhere else? The iPhone isn't behind the tech curve, for whatever you deem as "behind", is pseudo-specs. Perhaps I'm wrong though, in which case, enlighten me.
The smartphone market is currently advancing faster that any other tech device on the planet. The trend is set to exceed the iPhone-4 sooner than what Apple can match. Still, the ecosystem is superior and I will likely buy it, but not because I really want to. I’m returning to Europe and I need what the iPhone-4 ‘currently’ offers. It retains the best network for international travel and long distance services in the countries I visit. In terms of ‘devices’ go, I feel that Motorola and HTC will offer more robust models in very short order. In terms of the specs go I agree with you as of ‘today’ but tomorrow may be different.
BTW: Since I finally retrograded my iPhone 3G back to 3.1.3 it works pretty well although not good enough while I'm overseas.
