I am going to the US in November and was looking to buy a 64gb unlocked as it works out about a £100 cheaper (no surprise). It states that it is GSM only which I think is OK for us in the UK, i'm with o2.
So much for a world phone then!!![]()
Yep, my sentiments exactly. At the end of the day, if you plan to own an iPhone long-term, whatever the minutes and data you need, it is going to cost you whether you pay up-front for the phone and go on a cheaper rolling monthly, or you pay less up-front and pay more for a contract. If you plan on upgrading each year, you will lose money to the tune of £20 or so, so factor that in too and it really makes no odds to me. Bottom line is I will need a phone anyway for the years ahead, and need a good amount of data with tethering. It's not the problem that some people think it is, but also it's not as good as other people think it is! As long as when you work out the prices to compare, you remember to take into account that a £35/m on contract can be reduced to £20/m once you're out of the contract period. In other words, on a 24m contract you'd be paying £35 x 24, whereas on an 18-month contract over a two-year period you'd be paying (£35 x 18) + (£20 x 6).
To be honest, when I worked out all the options last year for the iPhone 4 there didn't seem to be much in it whatever you did - Unlocked on 30 day rolling, 18m or 24m. I think only Tesco looked like it was going to be any cheaper, but they had big availability issues at launch.
I second that - first iPhone was with O2 - never again. Been with 3 for ages now and never looked back.I an thoroughly recommend 3. I unlocked my 3GS from O2 as soon as I could and have been buying outright since.
This morning in London I got over 5Mbps download speeds on my iPhone 4. It makes O2's 3G speeds look absolutely woeful.
My order status still says....
Processing items - dispatched : ships by October 14th.
I placed the order around 8.40 and still haven't received confirmation mail and my credit card is not charged. Is that normal?
That's what mine says! I don't know if I (or my dad) have been charged, as he bought it for me.
O2 have just posted a FAQ but no tarrifs :/
As long as you remember to include US sales tax, the outside chance of getting hit by customs when you bring it back into the UK, and use the actual conversion rates your bank or credit card will charge you rather than mid-point trading exchange rates. Apple warranties are good worldwide and yes, UK is GSM.
Are o2 out of their minds? I wonder how much business they are losing by virtue of not taking pre orders.
I've never actually understood why so many people were on O2 in the first place.![]()

o2 were exclusive for the first iphone and thereafter. So a lot of people on contract with o2 then just to get the iphone are still with them now.
Ah ok, thanks guys.Because o2 were the only carrier at launch of the original iPhone and people like me have such a good deal that they would be mad to move!
