UK iPhone 4S thread.

It's available unlocked from Apple from 8:00am on 14th October and you can pre-order from 7th October. The PAYG iPhones are not much cheaper so you are better off getting the unlocked one from Apple.

Thanks for your help.
Please excuse my ignorance but what does unlocked mean?

I had a pay and go iphone 3g from O2 and it was stolen last month.
O2 sent me a sim card with my current pay and go balance on it and told me to just put it into my next phone when I bought it.
Will I be able to do this if I buy an unlocked iphone 4s from the Apple store on October 7?

I didn't know that you could get inside of an iphone to change the sim card.
When I bought my old pay and go 3g at the O2 store I recall that I never had to do anything with a sim card, but I could be wrong, since that was in 2008 and I forget.

You can use it on any network in the UK if it's unlocked, you aren't restricted to one single carrier.

So I could stick in my sim card and be up and running immediately?
Is this something that the user can do, or does it have to be done at a phone store or at Apple store?

on the 3G and the 3GS there is a little hole at the top of the phone. You put the tool supplied with the phone or a paper clip in the hold and the SIM tray with the Sim card pops out. On the Iphone 4 the little hole is at the side of the phone.

You will need a micro SIM (same chip, different size card). Your carrier will be able to give you one, or they might have a machine to cut your current SIM card down to size. My local 3 store had one.

Will this new phone be able to take advantage of 3's new HSPA+ network? Or will it be stuck at 7.2mb/s instead of 14.4?

a question here to anyone with experience and who's queued at the trafford centre for the iPhone 4, tell me what time i need to be there waiting - also, with a store based within the trafford centre, with many ways in, do you have to que at a certain place before the doors open?

Last year people were allowed to queue directly outside the Apple Store in the Trafford Centre hours before they opened. They even provided coffee and doughnuts!

the 4S doesn't have HSDPA+, it uses a type of MIMO (like what is in your wifi router) to effectively double the HSDPA speeds, therefore you theoretically will be able to get double speed on any HSDPA network, it's worth pointing out that you will likely never come close to 14.4Mbit is the real world.

so as an example if you are connected to 3G HSDPA and get a 2.3Mbit download speed now you theoretically will get 4.6Mbit using the 4S.

£100 for a 16GB step up to 32GB then the same price for a 32GB step up to 64GB. Thought the price of memory would be slightly exponential according to size.
Can't see any justification for that. Still, if the 64GB is the value proposition, I guess I'll just have to get that one :)

Argh, I don't know what to do! - buy iPhone 4s or go for an Android phone.

The Siri thing looks really interesting, but I'm not sure if I'd actually use it, and I was hoping for slightly bigger screen, etc. But I'm not sure if I want to get stuck on a 2 year contract with an android, in case Apple bring out an amazing iPhone next year.

Does anyone know if you could use a (cut-to-size) sim from an android phone in an iphone? If so, I could always sell the android next year and use the sim in the new iPhone 5...

but what time were people queuing outside the t/centre waiting for their doors to open?

With cue's will go faster:

As covent garden apple store is the newest and biggest apple store there probably will be more people queing but they will also have the most staff i guess, so.....

Apple store regent street?
Or
Apple store covent garden?

And will 4-5 Am be early enough to get one on launch day?

Another question:

Can i still buy 2 iphones like last year when i go to the apple store alone??

I guess prices are set and its take it or leave it but I think you're right though. It makes the 64 look like value. 64 it is... happy days. :)

I'd like to know what time we expect pre orders to start, does anyone remember from last year?

I suspect I'll need to get an early night tonight!!! Lol

I've been out of the 'game' for a while and my old Iphone 3G is looking a little long in the tooth.

I am happy with my sim only plan from 3 that is only £12 a month so I was wondering if anyone could tell me the cheapest way to get the new iphone?

It's most likely to be £499 unlocked right?

That unfortunately is something that I just can't consider at the moment :(
