- I would try to aim for 8am, these things move FAST
- Money is taken by Apple on despatch, from personal experience they're really tardy about it, sometimes I think they've forgotten then the next day it's been taken
- Sounds like you'd be comfortable with a 32GB, if you want to keep a wide variety of music

As someone else mentioned, you have to have the full amount of money in your account at the time you preorder. They won't take the money out until around the shipping date, but check that you have sufficient funds at preorder, presumably to ensure that they don't ship iPhones out to people that haven't paid.

Don't believe for a single minute they don't have any of this stuff ready and that all the tariffs did not need to be rubber stamped by Apple before going live. I'd bet money that they are not allowed to release that information before a certain date or time or be told they would not have supply of the new iPhone. It's the sort of control freak stuff I could see Jobs doing and wouldn't be surprised if Cook's Apple is no different.

technically that would be price fixing and illegal, a very serious crime in the UK; not saying it doesn't happen but I'd imagine Apple were ensuring a very strict embargo on releasing info on pricing but I'm not convinced they're dictating tarrif pricing to the networks.

Look, I used to work for Voda many moons ago. It is no coincidence that new tariffs were released last weekend. Everything will be in place but information will be embargoed for release until a certain time/date.

A general comment about the carriers...

We all knew the iPhone 5 was going to be announced yesterday. History shows that the prices would be largely similar to the launch prices of the iPhone 3G/3GS/4/4S...

We were near certain (weren't we?) that the new iPhone 5 was use nano-SIMs as opposed to micro-sims. Carriers have gone through this transition before with sim to micro-sim.

What irks me is that none of the five major carriers appear to have anything ready. They could have had web pages ready containing pricing, pre-order details, information on how to swap sims, and so on... They're not new to any of this, it happens with every single iPhone launch.

I guess we all want to give them our money in one form or another yet none of them seem to want to step forward and take the opportunity! I just don't understand why they let this happen time and time again. Instead they let their call centres and web-chat services become bombarded with the same old questions - making themselves look very incompetent in the process when they don't have any firm answers ready.

Still showing the 4S at the moment, but in the past it's been used to allow customers to reserve iPhones for pickup in store. I'm not sure if it's ever been in place prior to a launch, or only in the days afterwards. Worth a look though.

I know what you mean Garry! i went in to Vodafone today and asked when they will know price plans etc, he said "is the phone out yet?"

He was so rude, i pointed to him that the apple store above him have the prices for the phone so its not unreasonable for them to know what to charge.

I have been with Vodafone 10 Years and they act like they dont want money, im tempted to call them up tomorrow and ask for my PAC code and wash my hands with them! But tbh i dont really want the hassle lol.

Help with order

There are 4 people in our household, I'm wanting to pre-order 4 iPhones. How can I get around the two people delivery limit? If I use 2 different credit cards under a different name but the same address, will that work? Does anyone have any experience this?

I didn't say the prices were fixed, just that Apple had to rubber stamp them. They're a premium brand, they don't want a perception of their product being sold too cheaply.

From what I know Apple sells the phones to carriers at such high prices they won't ever be sold 'cheaply' lol.

I'm on Virgin, with 12 months left of a contract with a Blackberry. Ideally I would ask a nano sim replacement from them and stick it to the i5. But they don't offer them.

So the only thing I could do is to cancel the contract paying the remainder (12*12=£144 ouch!) and get a new sim when ordering the iphone(with Three or other). Is that right?

There must be a better way forward... Any ideas?

I've created a little script to help us Brits out with getting the first pre-orders of iPhone 5!

All free - hope it helps people :)

P.S. - No guarantee it will work but I'm 'reasonably' confident :p .. famous last words..

Thanks for that, when you say:

If previous years are anything to go by it is unlikely that it will happen right at this time.

do you mean it's been earlier / later in previous occasions? I've only ever ordered the 4s on launch day and it seemed pretty much on time @ 8am

Are you sure you aren't just going to sell the other three on eBay at vastly inflated prices? ;-) Best suggestion is to preorder two on the web, and queue up at a store next Friday and buy another two there.

my pleasure, I know pre-order launches can be quite frustrating/tense times! Sometimes it varies a little, for the iPad 3 I remember it went down for a fair amount of time - managed to get a pre-order in about 1am (UK time) from memory.

It ran 45 minutes late last year and then the store was horribly, horribly slow and the Oops message popped up more than a few times.

It was all horribly exciting!

You might be right, you might not. But given that O2 have 'announced' the contract pricing, but not that of the handset, I suspect any embargo is already over.

I would think that Apple would release at least the cost pricing to the carriers before the official launch announcement. Despite what they'd have you believe, Apple do give the official carriers some information ahead of top. Of course it'd be limited to top-executives, but that wouldn't stop the carriers having information such as:

- When their websites will allow preorders (to the minute!)
- How, when and where to swap SIM cards
- Whether you will be able to reserve for in-store payment/pickup on launch day
- Whether they will sell contract only at launch, or include PAYG or SIM free.

Even if they don't have any of the above information (and I can't believe they don't) why not post a simple FAQ stating that they don't have it, but will make it available by a certain date? Instead, with the exception of O2, all the carriers have is 'Register your interest' mailing lists.

I hear you but 'rubber stamping' prices is considered fixing them; I work for an (unrelated) 'high end' brand and whilst we can nudge and encourage our wholesale customers to market our goods at a certain price if we make any overt moves to get approval on the price they sell at we'd get in very hot water indeed

On another note does anyone anticipate any carriers offering one year contracts? Out of contract now and hoping to get unlocked phone from Apple tomorrow but if no joy there would consider buying on contract just as long as I'm not tied down for anything longe than 12 months

I seem to remember when Orange first got the iPhone, their prices were almost identical to O2, it came down purely to which network you wanted. To say I was suspicious was an understatement ;) I know the practice is totally illegal, but it happens.

I too would prefer a 12 month contract, but then I thought, do I intend to change network in 12 months time? probably not, so I can just sell my current phone and get one SIM free a year from now.

I miss the days of 12 month contracts :(

I can only speak for 3 here, but 3 has certainly been planning for the release. If you check their twitter feed @threeUK there is a *strong* hint that they are not releasing prices yet for a specific reason. What could that be? Either they are forbidden from doing so under contract, or it would put them at a competitive disadvantage compared with the other carriers who can subsequently adjust pricing based on early announcements. Info regarding nano SIMs clearly has been slow getting to retail staff, but let's give them the benefit of the doubt: I'm sure they did not want to share all launch details with retail staff before the launch. Loose lips and all that. If its still a problem by mid next week, then something has gone badly wrong. Until then, have faith.

Regarding delivery options, this is the first time I have ordered a product for launch day (fingers crossed) - will there be an option to pick up the iPhone from a local Apple Store as opposed to having it delivered to my home address? I know for sure I won't be home next Friday and to secure having it my hands on the day I'd prefer to pick it up from Regents Street.

You would have to queue up to get it at the store - pre-orders are for delivery only.
