Has anyone tried a different simcard in there handset from Orange, as looks as though might need mine unlocking as going away for work for a month, and dont fancy pay £1.70 a minute for phone calls....

That seems to be the orange way I'm afraid. I've been a customer for 14 year so they don't look after their own either. They used to be very good, and maybe they still are but they have totally ballsed the iPhone launch up. Customer Service is 07973 100150 from other numbers but you probably already know that. How did you order it? It all seems to be about getting the right department as they aren't all very informed.

Thanks, but I've tried that number too, again it asks for my orange phone number (which I don't have yet)
I ordered online.

I can't believe they don't know where my phone is, either it's been dispatched and its on its way or it hasn't been dispatched but is in stock and ready to be dispatched. Or they don't have it in stock and are waiting for it from Apple.

I wish they would just tell me, surely they know the answer?

There's something odd going on with the locking. When I first got mine, I put my T-Mobile sim in it as I needed to get the PAC code text. It worked fine (My iPhone was on Three).

However I tried it again this morning (after having the three sim in there) and it no longer works. Looks like it doesn't actually 'lock' to a network until Apple send off all the details to the network or something :/

If its any help, iOS 6 and the iPhone 5 have already been jailbroken. It's not released yet, however from the looks of things the jailbreak and an unlock will be released in the near future.

----------

If I want to get my iPhone (ordered from Orange) replaced because of cosmetic issues, do I contact them or Apple directly?

I'd try phoning AppleCare and see what they say. I would have thought you could just take it into an Apple Store for replacement, especially since so many people are receiving defective devices, however I seem to recall someone here saying that Apple wouldn't accept his/her iPhone as it wasn't bought directly from Apple.

Give them a call just to be on the safe side.

Watford store are stating 0 iphone 5 stock contract or sim free, no idea on when they will get new stock.

try 0800 079 0497 which is the online shop number or go here: http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/support/personal/contacting-us
and you should get a live webchat tab pop out from the left. If it doesn't, or it says it's busy, reload until you get through. Many operators on the 150 line won't help if it was a web order, goodness only knows why.

I've been with Three for over a year on their One Plan one month rolling contract and always been happy with them. I certainly plan to continue to use them for the foreseeable future.

I recently upgraded my phone from unlocked 4S to an unlocked 5 and while I don't think the download speeds are any faster between the two handsets I have always found the 3G to be decent pretty much everywhere.

I've seen a few people posting speedtest.net results as some people find them useful, so I thought I'd do the same. This was taken this morning in in Dorset.

Sounds about right. The networks provide Apple with a list of handsets to lock to their network. Then, only the networks can request an official unlock. Given the shear number of activations it makes sense that it will take a few days for Apple to get around to processing all the lock requests. The networks stand to loose too much money by leaving them unlocked. How many people stick to their network because they cant use another SIM? Some know that they can get it unlocked and therefore pay while others do not so stick. Either way, the networks make some extra money out of you after your 24 months.

Impact on iP5 release

I just had to put this down on paper, it might be useful for me the next time and cracks me up how much the release of one phone can ripple through the whole family:

Wife
Was on 3GS; O2 Simplicity 300.
I got a Nano SIM pack ahead of launch, SIM swapped into 3GS using SMS option and adaptor.
iPhone 5 activated with above SIM
Wife discovered how crap her tarrif is, 300min and 500MB for £20.50.
80 minutes spent on hold to O2 for PAC.
Trip to Brent X yesterday, T-Mobile store, moved to Full Monty 31 (reduced to £21)

Me
Was on 4S; T-Mob SIM-only pay monthly 10, 300mins with Extra Internet booster (1.5GB)
SIM cut using Scissors, placed into 4S using wife's Micro adaptor (HELLO!)
iPhone 5 activated with above SIM, T-Mobile's Free Nano SIM pack unused but came in handy below..
Called T-Mob and switched to Full Monty 31

Eldest child
Was on Blackberry, T-Mob You Fix
Inherited my old 4S, my unused Nano SIM put into Wife's Micro-SIM adapator (from O2) and placed in 4S. Activated using t-Mobile.co.uk/Newsim
Called T-Mob and switched to Full Monty 31 (there's a pattern emerging here)

Youngest Child
Was on some terrible Samsung thing, on Voda PAYG
Inherited wife's 3GS, Standard SIM swapped over
Switched to Web Freebee, £10/mo gives 300 txt, 500MB
Taking a trip today to one of those places that can change the 3GS battery while-u-wait, it doesn't keep its charge.

Ha I've tried that number and I've emailed.

I recieved the following responses in this order:
"I can't look for your order, it will arrive when it arrives"
"It will take 30 days"
"You won't get it any time soon"
"It's on it's way"
"I can check your order but will have to put you on hold for 2 hours" (WHY??)
"Your order is in the deliver system, I can't give you an exact date but all orders are being progressively dispatched over the next few days"
"We are awaiting more stock, once it is received your order will be dispatched"
"I promise it will be delivered on Monday 21st by UKmail, but I won't give you the order number because UKmails tracking system isn't working at the moment" - Even though I said I still want it, he wouldn't give me it.

So basically orange don't have a clue where my order is (and probably most other people's orders too)

Signed up for a new contract with T-Mobile, which gives me the EE service.

I'll be honest to say that in my area, we can't get the 4G service yet, but was a bit disappointed upon doing a SpeedTest on 3G service that I only got 1.71mbps.

Not great hey?

Anyone know if 3 ports their numbers quick?? I gave them mine PAC code from Orange late on Friday night, and on their website says next working day, so i'm guessing it will be tomorrow, as i did it after 5pm......but has anyone had same day service?? Could it be today or not?

I gave them my PAC code (from giffgaff) about 12:00 on the 20th Sept and my number was transferred before 12:00 on the 21st :D

This is the worst experience of customer service I've ever had, not only do they not know anything about what's going on but instead of admitting it they just give out random answers.

Really not happy with Orange about this.

Anyone having to activate your iOS 6 device every time you change your simcard?

No, I've used 3 or 4 sims so far, no activations after the first one.

If I want to get my iPhone (ordered from Orange) replaced because of cosmetic issues, do I contact them or Apple directly?

Your contract is with Orange, you should contact them as first option.

If you ordered in store you have no option to change, with T-Mobile there is no cooling off period.

Online or over the phone you have 7-14 days to change your mind.

The legal position is 7 working days to advise the seller you wish to return the item (Distance Selling Regulations).

Just to clarify, even though the phone says EE, you are still using either T-Mobile or Orange network. You won't be getting 4G service with the existing sim/contract. When the 4G service comes on line in the next few months you will need to transfer to the 4G network.

You can register your interest on the EE website if you are interested in moving onto the 4G network.

1.7mbps is a little pedestrian, I'm on T-Mobile (also showing EE, so unaware which of their 3G networks I'm using) but I regularly get 6-10mbps.

My latest speedtest.

You're using T-Mobile's network if it says EE. If you were using Orange, it wouldn't display EE, probably T-Mobile / Orange.

Mine shows EE if I am on Orange and Orange / T-Mobile if I switch to T-Mobile's network (I am an Orange customer).

The process is outside of Three's control.

All of the networks use the same system, with the same rules and the same timescales.

As you gave them the PAC after 17:00 on Friday, your number should be ported tomorrow (Tuesday) and you should receive a text/email today to confirm that.

Day You Give the PAC (before 17:00) > Day your number is ported

Monday > Tuesday
Tuesday > Wednesday
Wednesday > Thursday
Thursday > Friday
Friday > Monday
Saturday > Tuesday
Sunday > Tuesday

In terms of the time that it happens, the system operates within working hours. Your number will actually port any time between 08:00 and 18:00. You will almost certainly lose service on both your old and new SIM during the day and at some points, both may work with the same number!

One thing to note is that the system requires that the network submits the port request by 17:30 for it to happen the next day, so if you give a network your PAC late in the day and they're very busy (as they almost certainly will be at the moment), then it might not happen the next day.

I'm aware that I'm not on the actual EE server, but just expected a little more than 1.7mbps :(

Is anybody else waiting for a botched delivery from Friday?

UK Mail's tracking says that my phone isn't on the van today, but on the phone they've said this is a mistake and it is. Hopefully they're telling the truth!

80 minutes spent on hold to O2 for PAC.

FYI anyone trying to get a PAC code from O2 - The online advisors on their website will sort your PAC code for you, much easier than calling up.

Also had a similar situation where I was struggling to get a nano-sim from o2 as I'm on a sim-only contract. Saw Three had them available for sim only contracts, saw their plans were much cheaper for more data, made the switch. Likely that the rest of my family will follow suit.

Cool, cheers for that, very helpful :)

So I ordered mine (16GB Slate) from the Apple.com store and it just says:

Processing Items Dispatched: October

Not even a date :(

So far I'm over the moon with 3.

Couldn't find the qualifying for the F1 on saturday on the radio in car.... just streamed BBC1 off the website without a hitch over bluetooth audio :D

its great!

Where in Dorset are you based mate?

As I posted earlier I'm not even hitting 2mbps in Poole with T-Mobile.
