I can not see this bit about the SIM free phone locking on CPW is it not on the mobile site

Look here http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/iphone-5?intcmp=HP_iPh5

At the bottom in bold it says

iPhone will lock itself to the network of the first SIM card that is used in the phone. Subsequently attempting to use it on any other network, for example by replacing the SIM card, may mean it becomes permanently unusable. SIM free iPhones can only be used with a UK-network SIM card, and will not accept foreign SIM cards.

They're hardly SIM free then, are they? :(

I think it is but it's very clear to be honest. Calling Customer Service doesn't help either as they seem genuinely surprised that SIM free versions are available!

The definition of SIM free is that you can put any SIM in from any GSM provider World-wide. CPW don't currently sell iPhone 5s like this - only Apple does - but you can get it unlocked at the cost of about £15 from whichever provider you start off with.

A question for Three users.

I'm currently a prepaid Three customer and I managed to buy the new iPhone yesterday.

I was on the prepaid formula but I thought this occasion would be a good opportunity to switch to their one month rolling contract formula. So I went to a Three store and 5 minutes later I walked out of the Three store with my new sim and my contract set up.

However I am wondering how I can keep my current number(the one from my prepaid sim) and transfer it to my new sim (the one I acquired today with the rolling contract). The guy in the store told me to call a number and they would handle it for me (however he didn't tell me which number to call) and I would prefer to do it online. Any suggestions, how did you guys handle this situation?

It's here!

You need to give them a call. The number is 333.

My girlfriend upgraded online through orange Tuesday evening and got hers about 8:30 this morning!

Mine arrived:

Black 32GB
Carrier: Three
Ordered on 18th September
Original Delivery was 1st October, but they sent it early.

No scuffs/dings/problems so far.

Very happy.

Good luck everyone!

Just out of interest... Has anybody here Reserved a SIM FREE iPhone 5 and actually managed to get a reservation yet?

Without me going back nearly 300 thread pages, I cant see a single person who managed this so far!

Also, on the website it does say there are a limited stock for walk in customers. I wonder if it's worth going into a store first thing to see if they have any SIM FREE models available.

Im not sure how much longer I can keep trying to reserve a Phone! Come on Apple! Keep up with demand!

Carphone Warehouse do unlocked iPhones??? Is this true?

If so, my dozens of reservation requests are for nothing :D

If they will sell you one? Online sure you can buy sim free but rang CPW yesterday and one iPhone 5 in stock. Wouldn't accept my 700 quid for it. Said they only do contracts in store. Not to mention you pay full price for sim free but it will lock to the network of the sim that first gets inserted. Yes. Full price, sim free but they will lock. I gave up and will just wait a month from apple. At least it will be fully unlocked.

Just brought a 64Gb almost sim free white one for £699.

I went to the Tottenham Court road store (near Goodge street tube station), the staff there will not sell me one sim free. However, he was nice enough to show me the Oxford Circus store have already sold some sim free iphone 5, so suggest me to go there. I end up buying one from Carphonewarehouse store outside Tottenham Court road tube station (3 mins walk).

Checked in store to make sure there is no cosmetic defect, only "problem" I found is the area around the back camera rattles when I tap above the Apple logo.

They also have Lighting to USB cable for £15 (brought one), and 8 different cases around £20 each (got my on eBay for much less) for the iphone 5.

P.S. The did tell me about the phone lock to the 1st sim card. Since everyone in my house use Vodafone, so not problem when I pass the phone on in a year. I'd suggest you speak to your provider to see if they can unlock it to you for free before you buy from carphonewarehouse.

I went to the Regent Street Apple store on Tuesday, and was told by a staff near the front door there are no sim free phones for walking customers, we have to regster online. Felt sorry for her, as I can tell she has been repeating the same phrase all day long.

Just ring them and they do it within 24 hours.....i did the same but at the same time i 'upgraded' from payg to contract.

Mine has 2 tiny marks (where bottom left and right antennas touch the metal) they look worse in real life. Still I won't be sending it back, it took too long to get in the first place and I've spent enough time on the phone to Orange customer service. I'm sure I'll end up scratching it anyway.

Quick question, if I go to the Apple store and get the iPhone 5 on contract as an UPGRADE, then what ID/papers do I need.

Accoridng to the site you need Driving licence or passport, recent utility bill and bank statement. Do I still need utility bill and bank statement if I've just upgrading?

I ordered mine on monday and had a call from the 3 shop yesterday to say I could wait for a white 64gb for at least a week, or pick up a black one that day.

Went with the black one..... number ported over fine, all seems to be groovy. Selling my iphone 4 tonight hopefully :)

That might be tricky. I'm not sure how three work, but other networks have wanted the number when going PAYG --> Contract same network.

However, I came from Voda --> three, and had a temporary number. Ring 333 and select the option saying 'transfer your number' (its option 1 for me).

Try the automated process if you have a PAC code, or hold for an operator.

Is anyone else getting shafted by upgrading on Orange?

My "loyalty" offer is 300 minutes a month less for the same amount of money per month. No increase in data - nothing. Except my 9th magic number.

I'd really like unlimited browsing, on my 36ppm contract has anyone managed to squeeze that out of them?

My girlfriend upgraded with orange online, ordered it tuesday early evening and got her iphone this morning about 8:30!

She got a 10% discount on her current tariff for staying with them.

Trafford Centre didn't when I was there Tuesday.

Did not see any in Regent street store on Tuesday. However, Carphonewarehouse have some in their bigger stores.

Thanks. My dad popped into Regent Street this morning to double check and said they didn't have any, and I phoned Reading and they said they didn't either. :(

Will try Carphone Warehouse, O2, John Lewis tomorrow as I have some spare time. I did order a Speck case off Amazon, but yesterday it went from being dispatched Friday to 31st October to 10th December!!

Any UK buddies ordered a case online and got it? Any recommendations?

You can just order a case off eBay for £2 to £4 while you wait, I found those are very good quality. I brought a clear case and rubber bumper for total sum of £5, they both fit perfectly on the iphone 5.

Also just make sure the item is based in the UK and you should get it in 2 working days as most seller offer free 1st class postage.
