Carphone warehouse website is no longer offering a sim free iPhone 5. I guess their stock ran out too... Or is this by Apple's request?

Either way Apple get their money so I don't know why they are so concerned with people taking contracts.

Hei guys. I just arrived to UK. Will be living here for 4 years while studying at University. Do any of carriers allow to use other SIM cards as well? I need to know since I will be at my home country during winter and summer breaks and would like to use my Latvian SIM card. Thank you.

As long as your phone is unlocked, any Pay as you Go Sim should work.
GiffGaff do a good one, but nano sims might be an issue.
3 have a PAYG nano sim.

The consensus seems to be that Apple receives "kickbacks" from the carriers for every phone they sell that is on contract, so these kickbacks must outweigh the money they get from unlocked sales.

IMHO, your only option is going sim-free unlocked, so get your iPhone from Apple.
I guess you wouldnt be able to get a contract anyway, as you say that you just arrived in the UK, and most likely would not pass the credit checks, etc.

nice touch on Apple.com! R.I.P Steve Jobs.

Now i don't feel so bad that my iPhone is taking so long to get to me, at least i am here to be able to use it.

Its not that. Its just that they have handsets locked to various networks and the ones without the locks are quite popular so sell out leaving just locked handset stock. People simply dont want to be locked into a 2 year contract.

Would all be much simpler if carriers didnt insist on locks.

Actually, they don't. All the stock is in an unspecified state. When the phones are sold, the member of staff scans the phone's barcode and then one for the network the phone will be connected to (or indeed, one for SIM free). When the phone is activated, the lock status is applied as per what is stored on Apple's servers.

In other words, all stock is the same, it's just how it is allocated.

Just noticed that little memorial on Apple.com too. It wasn't up earlier this morning when I checked, but i guess it went live at Cupertino time. Very nice touch indeed. It'd be quite fitting if many of us got our iPhone reservations today, but ultimately it shows how everything pales in comparison to the importance of life and death.

well said.

if our discussions about iphones being delayed were on Twitter, I guess #firstworldproblems would be trending right now :D

APPLE:

I'll happily form a queue outside your store and wait.

Without trying to be sarcastic or righteous, Apple did give you that option on the 21st Spetember, and as I heard everyone who queued at the Metro Centre that morning got the iPhone 5 of their choice.

You can't really moan, you were given exactly that option.

Ok, so now it's 2pm on a Friday, has anyone had any status updates on their orders?

As for many others, order status has been at "Dispatched: 2 - 3 Weeks Delivers 02 Oct, 2012 - 08 Oct, 2012" since.

It just changed to preparing for shipment. woo!
