When your iPhone gets activated, it gets locked. The iPhones are unlocked in their box. The Apple Stores may have different shelves for ones they plan to sell as contract and ones as unlocked, but there's nothing different between them.

Exactly. The SIM lock is applied when the phone is activated, according to whichever network the phone was sold on.

Ordered 1st October:

Went to 'Preparing for shipment' about 6 hours ago.

Still the same status.

Anyone know when they should be with us by?

I heard Apple does not use a courier that delivers weekends, so maybe early next week?

Yeah, I'm in exactly the same scenario, ordered 1st Oct, went to 'preparing' early yesterday evening. I was sure someone had said that it usually went to 'shipping' within a few hours, so I got my hopes up I'd get it by the end of the week. Still 'preparing' right now though, so yeah - next week looks more likely now. Dang!

exatly - ask for a retail box replacement within 14 days, and they've got plenty.

Would it be unfair to suggest its all the fault of that ex-dixons bloke apple have employed to ruin their rep?

The decision on the contract/sim-free allocations will have been made by someone high up in Apple and no doubt the ex-Dixons chap will at least be aware of it.

Ultimately it comes down to a business decision; Apple exists to make money and they make more selling a contract iPhone than they do sim-free.

It is indeed, but they don't want to allocate it to unlocked, whether it's a decision of someone from the upper level or managers in the UK. Will try 3 emails in one store today, don't think honesty with one reservation will get me anywhere

I'm told that the contract units lock out to the network it's sold on and the sim free ones just remain open.

Why sell it unlocked when you can get the same price for the phone from the network and commission on top for connecting the customer to a new/renewed contract?

fund

i ordered an iphone 5 several days ago and the Apple reserved the fund (599 pounds) on that day. but today i found the fund back to my bank account again and my order is still in processing.

is that normal? Apple would firstly reserve the fund in your account for a few days and then would release it? The price of my iphone would be taken after Apple dispatch my order?

does anyone know the process?

Its certainly all rather irritating. I've got a phone on order now, due to deliver in a couple of weeks probably but I would prefer to buy it in a shop if I possibly could so I can check the quality with an assistant nearby. I've been trying to reserve a 32GB Black Sim Free from White City pretty regularly over the last 3 weeks with no success though.

I would say it has taken the shine off things, but then I ask myself whether I can really get that excited about a new phone anyway. I read comments on here from people who seem to be beside themselves with excitement and wonder what exactly it is that they do when the phone arrives to make it so "exciting" for them.

Presumably they aren't making calls as that won't really feel different to any other phone. If they are listening to music then it will probably be in their pocket, so the experience will be pretty much the same as listening to music on anything else. Browsing the web - well, it will be like browsing the web on a slightly bigger phone screen (but still much smaller than browsing on their laptop or iPad). Is it gaming? Are they taking lots of photos with it?

The more I think about it the more I realise that smartphones are becoming increasingly "invisible", they are just a window for consuming content or using apps (oh, and making the occasional telephone call!). The screen size/quality may change a bit, the speed might increase but ultimately the user experience isn't hugely different.

The leap from "dumb" to smart phone was genuinely exciting as it put a mini computer in people's pockets, opening up a whole world of possibilities that just weren't readily available before. Now we are in a process of refinement and I'm finding it difficult to summon up much more excitement over an impending upgrade than I used to feel back in the day when I upgraded my PC from a 286 to a 386!

I must be getting too old for this!

Order shipped!:D

Status changed to preparing yesterday evening.
In the email it says they expect the order to be delivered to me by tomorrow or even before!(is that even possible:confused:)
Anyway I'm super excited after this 3 long weeks of waiting!!!
BTW does anyone know about when do they deliver it to your address? I'm going away at around 3.30pm so if it gets delivered in the morning that would be great:eek:

After the EE fiasco i'm considering Three.. they are the cheapest right now.
Any suggestions ? are they really that bad in terms of signal?
Do they unlock handsets upon request?

3 are pretty good on signal (they share T-Mobile's 3G radio network) and they will unlock handsets on request.

Order shipped too!! :D

Mine went to preparing last night as well shipped about 14:00 today. Delivery tomorrow!

There won't be a set time slot it's just all day you might be lucky and it come before hand but...

Once ordered a ps3 which I gave up on say of delivery but door wet at 21:00 and there was a delivery guy!

Does anybody know roughly what time Apple send out emails if you have been successful with a store reservation? I'm trying to get one from Birmingham Bullring.

Shipped! Finally!!!!:D

Really hoping I'll get it tomorrow.. Apple site estimates tomorrow, but I didn't get the email til 6:30 this evening, and the UPS site says it's not even at the depo yet (and doesn't give an ETA yet), so I think it might be a bit optimistic.

Fingers crossed...

some of you might not believe this, and it may make a few of you slightly pissed....but....

payday for me tomorrow, so i was finally able to use the online form to reserve an iPhone....and i have just received the email now, first time reservation, straight in with an iPhone, BOOM!

Hopefully picking it up between 4 and 5pm tomorrow :).

Well congrats and enjoy.

Make sure you take some I.d along

the latest i can pick it up is 4-5pm, has anyone had any success moving this to a later time? the store i reserved it at closes at 6pm.

Yes, I originally had a pick-up slot of 4-5pm and changed it to a later slot, however the last pickup slot ended an our before the store closed. Worth trying anyway.

cool thanks. how much later were you able to pick it up? 5-6pm? even though there is no slot for that.

O2's online stock checker seems accurate. I was able to pick one up at the Boston store two weeks ago today, having checked online in the morning. My first (and hopefully last) visit to Boston.

Obviously the network provider is personal preference - I picked O2 because I have no signal with any other network at home.

General impression is that the iPhone 5 holds a much better signal than the iPhone 4, and 3G web browsing runs faster even though I'm using it in the same places.

I was able to get a 8-9pm pickup slot, however this was for the Trafford Centre store which is open until 10pm on weekdays.

I ordered my white 32GB iPhone 5 on Oct. 15th via the website.

Currently in ' Processing ' phase.

It has always said 3 - 4 weeks delivery Nov 7 to Nov 13 Delivery

So my question is:

What are the chances of it being early?

or

What are the chances of it being late? ( This is important as I may well be working abroad soon )

cheers

Three have a strong signal in many places but I found that throughput drops considerably in many built-up areas and during peak time (early evening for instance) incoming calls would frequently go straight to voice mail due to lack of capacity in the network.
