Apple would never give that info out that early
O2 will find out when the big white van comes with deliveries.

Believe it or not Apple do talk to carriers. I know people who work for a UK carriers marketing team, one of them told me the launch date about 3 months ago.

^ Who probably read it on a rumours website anyway.

I've managed to get an iPhone on launch day from a carrier's store every time since the 3gs and I don't see any reason for it to be different this time. if anything the 5c will weaken demand for the 5s as well. I think that sometimes the guys in the stores don't know anymore than we do and get bored with just saying they don't know and come up with anything for the hell of it.

There's also all the rumours about limited availability in the news web sites at every launch that fail to materialise that are probably just put out there to generate hype.

O2 have confirmed (on twitter) that 5s will be order only in stores on the 20th. What a farce.

Looks like the only way to get a 5s on launch will be from Apple.

I popped into an Apple store yday and asked the staff how it works with them getting an iPhone. They said they put reserve stock away for themselves so they always get release day items.

Seems like the only way to get one on release day with little 'on the day hassle' is work for Apple :)

Its one way of a stress free pick up of the latest phone:)

That would be consistent with recent reports of Apple wanting to up its in-store share of sales of phones, versus carriers.

For whatever reason....

I'd have assumed they get the same profit regardless.

Perhaps they just want to increase shop foot-fall, to sell other Apple stuff...

Manager in O2 store in Dunfermline said today that O2 stores won't hold physical stock of 5S on Friday 20. It will only be available to order from Friday for delivery at a later date. Has anyone else heard this news, of O2 or any other network?

If this turns out to be true (and the manager was absolutely adamant she was right), then there will be a lot of extremely disgruntled potential iPhone customers. Me included...

Yes I heard the same thing in Newcastle. See my earlier post. Suggests supplies will be very limited.

It may also be a way of managing expectations if they know they will get some, but very limited, stocks.

I also remain intrigued that their website only shows the Gold 5s.

I'm confused about O2 and their pricing guidelines for the Refresh contract.
How can they say a 64GB phone is £769.99?
And if you follow the 4G tariff through (i selected to pay £449.99 up from on a 64GB), and allowing for the £10 a month, the total price came out cheaper than if i'd have bought it from Apple?
All their prices seem high, and they don't even have 4G yet, so what's the point in getting it?

I would be surprised if this is some sort of underhand activity by the staff, either there would be an agreement that the staff could buy on launch day or not.

It's pretty annoying! It essentially means that to get it on launch day you have to pay well over five hundred pounds.

Almost enough to make me consider getting a HTC one.

He said they were allowed. I guess not everyone does it so out of the load of phones they do get it doesn't affect stock too much. And at the end of the day they are customers too.

He did mention that last year they had 1200 iP5's and they all sold on launch day.

Three are saying on Twitter that they hope to have stock in stores on Friday but can't say 100% and also that contract details won't be announced until Friday which will mean v.little time to compare before ordering.

If their prices are anything like the 5c it's cheaper to buy outright and go SIM only.

If i order 5s on 20th at 12:01 am then what are the chances it will be delivered by 23rd monday? I am leaving for my home country on 23rd and will not be coming back for two-three months. Any update?

Thing to do is check the estimated delivery that Apple quote on the 20th. In my experience they're normally spot on. Apart from that, I'd say it's too early to predict the delivery times yet.

about a BIG PHAT zero chance

This makes me sad :(

Try order online at 12:01 and then head for your local store. If you get one at the store then just cancel your online order.

Spoke to Apple this morning. You can pick one up in your local Apple store Friday morning. If you order online then you should have it by Tuesday at the latest.

I'm going down to the Apple store near me to get one, never cued like a loser for a phone before so may wear a mask to hide the shame ;)

The 5C and 5S are not as big a change from the 5. So to make there appear there is more of a buzz, make people queue and film it.

Create an illusion of demand.

Great marketing.

Thanks for the info! That sounds like a plan! Online order and a cue up! I wonder what the best time to get to an apple store will be?
