I'll see what they say today and let you/everyone know. Thanks for your help mate, much appreciated!

Am trying the Three PAYG then unlock route myself. Ordered earlier for delivery tomorrow. Since I'm on o2 and will be abroad a lot, I want it unlocked to use local SIMs. Reading back through the thread, it sounds like people buying direct from 3 had no issues getting it unlocked within a day or two but I have a query:

If, for whatever reason, 3 won't unlock it I will be returning the phone. So it needs to be 'as new'. As such, can I apply for the PAYG unlock (2 days or so) from their online form WITHOUT actually opening the box? Or do I have to at least start the phone up, insert the SIM that it comes with to register that SIM/number on their network (as their online form asks for the Three mobile number).

Obviously I won't be removing and screen protectors or anything else at all until I've confirmed the unlock. Just don't want to end up with a £629 + £10 SIM that I can't use!

Not sure what's going on with UK retail stock but after another day of no stock yesterday in Manchester, I spoke with a retail employee who was implying this week would be sparse due to the Chinese holidays and meeting online orders first. Doubt he can be certain and was a bit non-committal but it tallies with what I can see after days of nothing in retail stores. Reports on here suggest Arndale is out as well as Regent St.

My Gold iphone 5S, 32GB, seems to be stuck on "preparing to dispatch" since Monday :( hope it's sent out soon. I'm seeing others have theirs sent out. I ordered a little after midnight on launch. Come on :apple:

You're part of the 32gb silver and gold bunch. No sign so far.

Do you get a notification when it is dispatched? Will save me from refreshing like a monkey.

And the 64gb Gold and Silver bunch, as far as I can tell. 64 Gold 00.04am, stuck on Preparing for Shipment.

Just had the delivered text from UPS, but nothing has arrived

Spoken to UPS and it's gone to the wrong address in town. I'm hoping they can sort it our today, else I could be heading back to the end of the ordering queue...

Mines too been stuck since monday.

So, I've just this minute ordered a sim free 5s from CPW for store delivery on thursday....

Should I be concerned, whats all the talk about sim locking and unlocking?

Sim free is sim free right?

Or am I going to have to unlock it if I swap networks?

I've done the same thing - ordered just now for store pickup.

However, what did your confirmation email say about timing? The website specifically said "free next day delivery", but the email now tells me I should "allow 2 days for my item to be ready for collection".

I have no working phone at the moment, and going away for a fortnight on Friday morning which is why I've been so keen to get his sorted. Tried calling CPW to find out what's going on, but after speaking briefly to somebody I've been stuck in a hold queue for 40 minutes...

Does the cologne import scan mean that the phone has arrived in Germany as there has been no arrival scan yet?

Anybody managed to buy one sim free from carphone warehouse online?

Quite a few have had success in this thread.

They messed up my order and it got 'lost' and didn't want to do anything about it (64GB/Silver). Seems others here have had the same problem.

If you order online, be sure to confirm it on the phone. In fact, better just order over the phone and get a tracking number.

Yep, I did last night, which miraculously arrived this morning!? Only one though ('hers') as they rejected a second order ('his') :( 'His' is probably still in the manufacturing line in China. It seems that CPW have now pulled the PAYG 5S's. Only contract are currently available.

(The things good husbands do)

Sounds risky.

Should I stick with my online apple order or wait off a few weeks? When will they sell in retail stores to sim free?

At long last! Went to 'preparing for shipment' at around 7pm last night. So hopefully it will start moving today :) Probably looking at delivery sometime next week...

I think given its not too far off 48 hours since many orders changed to 'Preparing for Dispatch', that its now pretty safe to say that they are being held up because of the Chinese holiday and the fact that UPS were going to be shut down for 3 days. I know we had hoped maybe they would have some agreement with Apple, but if that was the case, there would be movement by now. Plus if you are going to announce that you are shut down for three days, then its likely difficult to run your logistics network to do even one shipment.

So I would think we now won't see any movement until Friday in China, which I guess would be like Thursday evening here.

As for the people moaning that Apple has lied or whatever, get over it... don't get me wrong, I'd like my phone as much as everybody else. However, we are still within the shipping window they forecast, which is hardly some concrete agreement as it is, but its likely if they go tomorrow evening that they will still meet that anyway.

I would think if that is the case, we will be looking at receiving them on Monday, which puts us exactly on the first day of the forecast delivery window, the 7th.

Anyone who got their phone before that shipping window just got quite lucky and it also massively depended on the model you had ordered.

Your example of a switch broken in use could be a warranty issue, a phone arriving damaged is a retailer issue, and the Sale of Goods Act is pretty clear as to who has legal responsibility with consumer contracts, it is the retailer and NOT the manufacturer.

You can wish otherwise all you want, but the SoGA is very clear on that point.

At a different company maybe, but Apple would replace the phone.

I doubt it, let's make an extreme example, you order a phone from EE, they send the phone out via DPD who accidentally drop a pallet on your parcel. When it's delivered the box is 2" thick and iPhone is in a hundred pieces.

By your thinking, if you take the pancaked box and 100 pieces that used to be an iPhone to the Genius Bar, Apple will replace it?

I think far more likely you'll be referred to the legally responsible entity, in the example above being EE, to resolve.

UPS SUCK SO HARD !!

"Customer was not in on 1st attempt ..."

Why can't they just tell me when they will deliver ??? Someone is in from Midday FFS.

Noone will be in for all the times they deliver in the morning, so what happens now ? iPhone 5s gets returned to Apple ? The UPS Depot is 60 miles from my house :(

d123 is correct - in the UK, it is the retailer who sells you the product that you go to with any problems.

Eg. If you buy a Sony TV from Argos, and discover a problem, it is Argos you take it back to.

Apple, however, is perhaps unique in the UK in that they take a lot of ownership over their products. Whether you bought the product from them, or from another retailer, they are very good about helping you, and often replacing the product.

It'll be held at the depot for you to collect or rearrange a delivery (which will again be sometime in the delivery day).

All risky TBH! CPW still have stock of Grey 16 / Grey & Silver 32 & 64 checking a moment ago but they add £50 on some for a nice extra profit.

If you order online then expect an email immediately but it's the confirmation of order and DPD tracking number that needs to follow within a few hours to actually confirm they've done anything. If you get that, it's supposed to arrive next day as long as you order before 5pm.

Then you still need to unlock it unless you're happy with it locking onto your current SIM. 3 is the cheapest and quickest (£15.32) and done in 1-2 days. Search the thread for more info about this if needed.

As for retail stores, it's more a question of when will the mass groups of scalpers stop turning up, buying all the stock and selling them to Dubai. Once Apple can sort the backlog and overstock stores and/or release it to more markets it might be available if you walk into an Apple store at any time of day.

For now, looks like a few months before this might happen.

I managed an order about 8pm last night for a PAYG iPhone 5S Silver 32. Turned up this morning. Yes, I paid an extra £50 on top.

From what I can see they have pulled PAYG 5S's and their current stock is available for contract only.

The issue Welshyboy is not getting is things outside warranty (Apple will deal with warranty issues no matter the retailer).

He seems to think a damaged/broken phone when delivered would be something Apple would just replace when it's clearly damaged/broken/smashed on arrival the onus is on the retailer who supplied to rectify.
