So the 16GB 5S with the cheapest 4G (*ready!!*) tarrif on Voda will cost £1207 over the term?

Hard pass from me

79 + 24 * 47 = £1207 so yes.

If you are OK with the Three network you can go £549 + 24 * £9.9 for £786.60. So you save £420. Three will give you 4G for free when their 4G network launches. Or if the Three network doesn't work for you and 3G is fast enough T-Mobile or GiffGaff will save loads too

Going for gold

oh right, didnt know that, how much does that make it in usa, do you know?

Thanks I never twigged that and I feel so much better learning this fact! Feel less ripped off :)

After much humming and hawing over whether to take 'advantage' of the Orange/EE swap scheme, upgrade early or even get my husband to renew his contract but give me new phone :)D) I have decided to order a sim free 64gb 5s direct from Apple on Friday and stick it on my 0% credit card. Can't believe it took me since last week to think of this!!

Am one year into my iPhone 5 Orange contract and hate - absolutely hate being tied into 24 month contracts because I like to get the new iphone every year. If I swap or upgrade early I will be stuck with them for another 24 months and

This way I can sell my current 64gb iPhone 5 to pay off a big chunk of the cost immediately and prob have it paid off totally in about 6 or 7 months. Plus as I am half way through current contract can porb reduce my tariff costs by about £10 per month. Then when the next iPhone is released I will be more attractive sim free phone to sell to fund it ad can take advantage of lower PAYG tariffs.

I have always gone with contracts in the past to make the phone affordable but now that 24 months is the norm they are no longer appealing!

I feel free......almost

I made that decision when I bought my 4S. Then didn't bother with a 5  But it's still been way cheaper than a contract over the time I've had the phone...

The conclusion for me, is that there would now have to be a serious incentive to go with a 24-month contract with phone, considering the costs we're seeing, both 3G and 4G.

-There would have to be a serious subsidy of the phone (rather than the distributed cost + 'premium for effective loan' that these latest contracts show).

-Plus a better level of choice of what's in the contract.. (Unlimited minutes and texts are a waste for me.. I barely use 100 of each / month) but I do need data...

-Plus flexibility within the contract.. to change, to upgrade, whatever.

Otherwise, it's SIM-free phone + SIM-only contract (1 or 12 month) with the provider with the best reception for me, based on my home and work, and checking the OFCOM mast locator.

I've been watching as some of the 5s contract details are released, and I'm yet to see anything that comes close to compensating for the 24-month lock-in. And when there are cheaper 1 month SIM-only deals out there, what is the incentive to sign up for 2 years? Okay, one down side is the up-front cost of the SIM-free phone.. but I should knock £200 off that by selling my current phone, and for me, the overall saving over the first year, let alone 2 years, plus the flexibility of a SIM-only contract, easily wins it for me.

When I got the 4S O2 charged me an early upgrade fee of £80 but credited it to my account (without a corresponding debit :) ) so I got 2 months free line rental plus I sold my 4 for £100 more than the cost of the 4s upfront cost so I actually made/saved money that year.

I agree completely. The networks must be delighted that they can all 'get away' with 24 month contracts now since no one rocking the boat and offering 12 or even 18 months. Even O2 refresh not as good as you would hope - just designed to keep you locked in.

Plus am sure they are happy to offer unlimited calls and texts given they know most people wont use a lot anyway.

60mins of calls, 50 SMS, inclusive picture messaging and 1GB data would suit me fine.

Looks like my prediction was right.

By going 12 month sim only with Vodafone, I will save £44!:)

For me, the justification for getting the iPhone was always that I could sell it in 12 months time and pay off the remainder of my contract and cover the handset fee

Now we're talking £40+ pm AND £100ish for the handset, selling the handset doesn't really come close anymore #

Hmm was just trying to see how much data I've been using, doesn't seem to be in the 'Usage' section anymore (on iOS7 anyway) - but yeah as above, I need about 20 mins and 50 texts pm (iMessage and Whatsapp are my mine usage)

Phoned my local 3 store earlier, they were ONLY taking names as they had limited stock, says he'd ring on thursday.

Well called EE about iPhone 5S prices, seeing if he could offer me anything as I've been with Tmob for over 7 years. Answer was 'sorry sir, I can't give prices until iPhone 5S comes out' well thats great considering I know the standard iPhone 5S prices and you don't...

Don't panic

even after sales tax still £70-£80 cheaper, will they work fine tho on uk networks? im guessing they will just need confirmation

A lot of States let 'tourists' claim back the sales tax when you leave the country... but you have to present the item (still sealed, in it's original packaging) and a sales receipt, usually at the airport... Depending on the airport/state, you can do this in the check-in area somewhere, or just fill out a form and post it off with the receipt. Also, some larger 'malls' have a tax back office for foreigners so you can purchase an item and get the tax back straightaway.

Technically, the UK taxman will hit you with VAT when you land but that depends if you get stopped etc...

why don't you go for the EE sim only deal?

16 * 24 = £384 + 549 = £933 / 24 = £39 / month

unlimited text + unlimited calls + 1gb (4g)

Anyone any idea how long you'd have to queue before getting served at the covent garden store if you got there early like 6am?

I looked into it, and it seems people seem to think its worth joining the queue late into the day, so I guess they must have a lot of stock and are efficient

But more seriously, I bought my iPhone 4 on launch day at an O2 store. Joined queue at 6:30. Store opened at 8:02. Phone bought 8:20.

If we order the iPhone 5s at stupid o'clock (12:01pm - 3am) for example when do you think we'll get the phone? - I have never ordered an iPhone direct from Apple always pre-order with a carrier but as I want the 5s and I am still on contract I am buying it outright.

The 2nd column on tis sheet might be the one for you then!

Is there any conformation of the time you can buy via the Apple Store online? I've seen both 1201am and 0801am quoted.

Thanks
