very strange.. placed order on 20th at 00:19. funds were held immediately from my bank account (balance was £629 less).

just checked balance today and I'm £629 up again !! what's going on ?!

It's what Apple do every year for a Pre Order (or in this case long wait)

They ask the bank if there is XX amount in the account
Bank takes 3 days to reply
Apple then release the funds as they know you have the money
Money isn't taken until the items are dispatched

This was all from the Apple Store Glasgow who told me today

That's normal. They were just checking if you had the neccessary funds in your account before accepting your order. They put a temporary hold on the amount. They won't actually charge you and take payment until they dispatch your order. Many online retailers do that with preorders or in this case what essentially is a preorder.

I'm going to try get myself a 5S 16GB Grey model this week. Hopefully my nanosim arrives tomorrow or Friday.

I'll just chance my luck at my local Apple store. Not going to bother buying online and waiting away into "October".

Tim Cook is supposed to be the supply chain king and this whole thing seems a bit... amateur.

Yep, shipping/selling 9 mil iPhones in a weekend is proper amateur eh?
We have known for a while that supplies of the 5S would be constrained at launch (possibly low yields on fingerprint sensor?) At the end of the day it's a phone. If not having one is so stressful, try imagining the launch date was Oct 31st rather than Sept 20th. If you can't get one by then, by all means complain.

Quick question. CPW rep told me that you need to request an unlock for every change of network provider, so swapping multiple network sims won't work. Can anyone out verify this. Essentially he states it locks again once a new SIM is inserted. Thanks in advance.

Well I've had a 3 sim, taken it out, put in an o2 sim and then put my 3 sim back in with no problems. Unless it can be locked to multiple networks, I think it's fine. It also reads 'unlocked' on an IMEI checker. I've got an Orange and Vodafone sim on their way (always handy to have some spare sims around!) but I don't think it can lock again after being unlocked.

Quick question: when I look on the CPH website, I can't really see a 'sim free' option. How would you order this one?

I know that it would lock to the network of the first SIM you insert. I am aware of that.

You have to click on the sim-free phones option (second to last link on the left hand side) and then click on the iphone logo :)

So tempting, but I know it will end up being locked to one network :(

It does lock to the first network... But what most people have done (me included) is put a three pay as you go sim and you can get it unlocked by them for £15.32 in approx 24 hours. After that it's unlocked forever and you can use and switch whatever sims. I guess it all boils down to whether you want to pay £15 to get it a few days earlier than people that have ordered online through apple.

It's sad that a third party has no problem selling the phone online, yet Apple acts as if it not even released!!!

This is kinda how I feel about the whole affair...

Just a joke btw!

Really delighted with my 5s silver. I think they look so much smarter than the gold ones. Just cancelled my 32GB 5s gold order online that I ordered at 00:02. Hopefully one of you guys gets yours quicker!

Got to say, I think I jumped the gun on the gold. According to Apple you can swap within 14 days. That'd be comforting if they weren't having such stock problems! :p
Worse still, I already used my screen protectors!

The alternative option of course is to purchase an iPhone 5S locked to Three in the first place. There may be better availability and it would be easier to find both in 3 stores and CPW.

There's a big difference between how many have been sold and how many are in customer hands. Frankly, low yield on a component is irrelevant to a customers experience. There's a lot more they could do do make the process easier.

Totally agree on the last comment though, it is just a phone. As I say, I'm more interested in seeing this through than actually getting hold of the phone itself.

Im suprised. I've heard the gold one is the best one and feels more premium? You not liking it anymore?

So here we go again then ... Business Working Day 5 since ordering the 5s .... potentially only 2 working days left til the window of dispatch opens

Given that most people's Apple leather cases shipped on the Saturday after their orders were placed there's a chance that the iPhones will go out this Saturday also.
