My assumption is that they feel the cost of making this not happen is too high to justify it for the brief period it is needed for. Sucks for us, but must make sense for them.
2yr guarantee is EU law, even if you get it from the Apple Store.
That's why Apple are getting sued by Italy.
I've been refreshing for a few hours (on and off) too. It has mostly come back with the yellow "We'll be back soon" post-it.
Going to try until about 11.30 and then just get up early I think. I can't believe that many UK folk will stay up all night and snap up all the pre-orders for delivery on launch day.

Do I need to pre order one to get one at a apple store on the 16th? Or can I just go n the 16th cue and get one?

Fiance just went to bed with, "Don't stay up too late else you know how ill you'll be in the morning ..." plus instructions to let the dogs out and turn the heating off and put his jumper (which I am wearing) on the kitchen chair and so on when I'm finally done. He knows better than to try to uncurl my hands from my laptop and credit card and lever me off the sofa when Apple is touting its new wares.

I think the hourly alarm thing is the best way to go guys... I too will give it 30 minutes then set an alarm for every hour.
I actually wouldn't be surprised if those Apple telesales people who said 8am pre-orders are actually correct now as it seems very odd that the site wouldn't be up yet unless they are keeping down on purpose waiting for the morning...

Exactly the same with me... Closest I got was "select your iPad"... Then bombed out then store went down... So frustrating!

And I did the same - stayed up late but the online store wasn't opening until 8am in the morning.
I had to leave for work at 8 so used the app on my iphone to order one about twenty past 8 in the car on the way to work lol.
Got it though - all went through ok!

I'm at the check out stage on the US site but can't figure out a way to flip it to a UK checkout

give up! 11pm (UK time) and apple store still not online, it came on for about 10 minutes around 8pm and went off soon i hit checkout now.
Its not just the UK store, i tried the German apple site to see if it was the same and it is. Never known the store to be down as long as it has been tonight. For iPad 1 i randomly woke up in middle of night, turned my iBook G3 on ( dead now) and pre orders had started so was one of first to order and got it day earlier if i remember correctly. Don't think i've got the stamina to stay up late tonight though but i don't have University tomorrow so i will have my Nursing in the Community books out... doing my reading and constantly refreshing the Apple website.

Sometimes the dogs wear my jumpers for a joke (not at the same time, there are two of them) but as yet I have not worn any of theirs as they don't have any. A cutesey sweater does not sit so well on a hoofing great German Shepherd as it does on a chihuahua.
I am updating my ATV2 now to while away the hours. Had to restore as as it's jb'ed and failed with an error when I tried to update t from the software menu. I forget that every damn time.

Yep, I managed to get one for launch day at 8AM the following morning. But that was different, they said that pre orders would begin on the 18th (for example, can't remember actual date). So we were all ready at midnight on the 17th. I gave up at about 3 am, I watched a ton of the big bang theory to keep me going. Might do something similar tonight. I will be tired at Uni but I will manage. No meither.
