Just got back from Kingston in Surrey who have 3 base Rmbp in stock, I bought one of them on a 14 day trial....we'll see how it goes as I'm concerned there just isnt enough room on the small SSD.

anyone know why the base rMBP cannot have its SSD upgraded?

From what I've read; all components within the rMBP are either soldered on or glued to the unibody to a state where they cannot be disassembled and upgraded.

The SSD isn't soldered or glued, but it does use a custom connector. No doubt third-party items will appear (OWC being a likely source) but the second problem is that to replace it you have to open the case which voids your warranty.

It's an artificial limit set by Apple. Of course, with the SSD being of the blade type, they could make an upgrade to 512GB available on the base rMBP. However, this would probably canibalise sales of the higher model - as is, you have to fork over more than the upgrade cost of the SSD by itself to get the faster CPU etc.

Basically, more money for Apple, stops people being cheap if they want the 512. Of course, can backfire and people just buy the base anyway and deal with it.

anyone know if apple stopped giving UK Higher Education purchases of Macs with 3 year warranty?

When I go to check out now I dont see anything telling me I have 3 years of coverage anymore just a link to one to one for service plan, and then a different link tells me to purchase apple care for 3 years vs 1 year that comes with the PC.

Got a higher education order set up on June 19th, at the time i think it told me my mac comes with 3 years and i can purchase 2 years of phone support with apple care.

Any ideas? will the mac that gets to me be stripped of that warranty? Thanks

Just received this e-mail from Apple:

Your order has left Apple and you will have received a Dispatch Notification email advising you of the expected delivery date.

Please note your items are shipping from different locations and will be merged, for your convenience, so that you will receive one single delivery.

As a result, please allow up to 4 business days for your Order Status to be updated online.

So, for the sake of a £9 MagSafe adaptor it will take up to 4 extra business days to get my MBP

"for your convenience"??? Really??? I don't think so. Very inconvenient actually!

It's still 3 year cover, just not really mentioned.

Parish I know you've probably already said a bazillion times but when did you order? Was it the 12th? I know I have no chance of mine coming for at least 3 weeks but can't stop checking the forums and my order status page every now and again :( It's horrible!

Guys - I've got a big smile on my face :)

Mine has just turned to "preparing for shipment"

I ordered mine on the 13th at 3pm BST with a 3-4 week 12th-18th July estimation.

Does anyone roughly know how long it will take for it to dispatch? :)

Well mine was preparing for shipment on the 25th, then changed to shipped on the 26th. Now it's sitting in Frankfurt waiting for the 9:30am flight to heathrow.

This seems to be the case for quite a few of us on the Dlh8401 flights between pudong and Frankfurt via Almaty. But don't hold me to it!!

I posted about this in a previous page. If you ordered before they changed the discount from 80-90% to 30% about a week ago, you'll be fine.

I went to the store and had to get them to honour a telephone quote i had with the education store

Anyone ordering now will not be able to get the very affordable applecare on education discount anymore :(

Apple gave me an estimate of wed 4th July. Does this info from expeditors.com tell me any different? I'm hoping for a Monday 2nd delivery if possible

Is this the free AppleCare discount or the discount for actually buying the mac?

Could you tell me the difference in actual pounds £££

It's anyone's guess. Like you, expeditors.com says 2 Jul, the shipping notification e-mail from Apple says on or before 4 Jul, and if I follow the tracking link from the Apple website it says 5 Jul

And if that wasn't confusing enough, as per my post earlier, I could add up to 4 extra days for the merge.

I'm not sure Expeditors gives the whole story as far as the delivery process is concerned. I think the "delivery" is not to the end customer but to a local courier or Apple merger depot, hence Apple's estimated delivery date is a couple of days later than Expeditors. Might be completely wrong (please someone step in and shout if I am) but that's my reading.

2.7/16/512

just pulled the trigger!

do you reckon that with this order combination I'll get a faster shipping? (on the of chance that most folks would go with 2.6)?

regards

There's some confusion here.

The original question was about the free, 3 year hardware warranty given to Education customers when ordering online or over the phone only, as it has always been. This warranty still exists, and is automatic, but isn't referred to clearly on Apple's site -they still want to sell you AppleCare, which just adds telephone support.

Just to reiterate, the above is only available online via your HE store, or over the phone with the education sales team.

Austin00, you're referring to making a purchase from an Apple retail store, which is different. They still do education discount, but it has never come with anything but the standard 1 year warranty - you had to purchase AppleCare, at a discount, in store. This again, remains the same, but appears to have gone up in price from around £40-50 to more like £200. Retail is treated separately from online/phone, and they're basically price matching.

Has anybody's order from the 14th changed to 'Preparing for Shipment'?

Doesn't look like it. There also appears to be a shortage of 768GB SSDs, so you may not see yours shipping early either.

What i'm on about is the discount you are entitled to when you buy a mac with education store discount applied to it.

You're given the option to buy applecare for about £50 (normally £279)

Now, as of a few weeks ago, the discount that brings you down to £50, has been changed to -30% off, which ends up at about £180ish...

Ah, perfect. Makes sense now...

The email (which I also received) is not telling you there is a 4 day delay. It is telling you that the order status on Apple site wont be updated for 4 days. This is totally normal - as Apple don't update you until the goods arrive in the UK anyway. You won't get your laptop this week, but you might get it next Monday... maybe.

Mine is on the same flight as yours matey :)

What's weird is that my 'Shipment status' went from saying:

Estimated Delivery Date (Subject to change) Jul 4, 2012

to

Estimated Delivery Date (Subject to change) Jun 27, 2012

...IF ONLY!

Ah, I see. Badly worded then. There's the paragraph about merging into one (for my convenience) then the next paragraph begins "As a result, please allow up to 4 business days..." which implies the two are linked

Ooh, some good news from Apple - £58 cashback now being tracked on Quidco :D
